'Hell's Kitchen' episode 7 recap, and our first stab at ranking the contestants

There was no way this week’s Hell’s Kitchen could have matched last week’s firecracker of an episode, unless, of course, if the mystery chicken had Read the full post.

Robert should never have been allowed back. He needs time to heal from surgery and from the scare — and he was given none of that. My impression is that someone at Fox felt the sympathy to his plight last time meant give him another try, but he’s clearly not the same guy and last week’s challenge/this week’s performance shows how much it was stacked against him.

I mean, come on: nobody at Robert’s weight and with his health problems was going to be fine after biking in the heat up a steep hill that healthy guys found challenging. And this week, he comes back and you can see he is sweating from the strain. The lamb seems to happen more often than not. It was the raw rabbit that Robert should have caught but his mind wasn’t quite in it any more.

Ramsay was right in saying he wasn’t head chef material, but Robert was right in saying he was better. Based on last night’s service, Van was worse in making the same mistake twice, forgetting the chef’s table and failing to be able to sell. (Dave, who was the strongest, also erred in not even giving them a choice.)

Now, the rankings are obvious. And the winner will be Ariel because it has flipped genders every season and a guy won the last time.

Okay, in defense of Van (sheesh) he only made the plastic mistake once, he didn’t do it again. My reasoning is that after the first fish was returned, he knew to look for the plastic. The other fish was fish that had been sent out prior. Dave’s rockin! Any dude that can keep up while wearing a cast has cajones! Can I say that here?

    • JULIA’S CHILD

      Why I guess I can!

    • MartinSA

Van made the mistake twice with the plastic and the fish–and was warned during prep by Robert.

    • jules

he did it TWICE. And his disrespectful, attempted-bullying of JP a few weeks back showed what a jerk he is.

      • JULIA’S CHILD

Not really. He sent out a batch with plastic but once one was sent back, he didn’t do it again. Another plate from that first batch got sent back, giving it the appearance of him doing it again.

    • queue55

Why didn’t Chef Ramsey catch the plastic on the fish? Just asking…

      • Krikettt

My daughter wondered the same thing.

I’m Southern as well, but I don’t think Van comes NEARLY up to the mark of ‘hillbilly half-wit.’ He is incapable of using the English language (“I cain’t mess up no more services!”), he has none of the sophistication that will be needed as a head chef at a decent restaurant (I expected him to hang his head out the window of the limo like a hound dog), and how appetizing was it to watch him PICKING HIS NOSE while the guys debated whom to send up? Suzanne is setting herself up to be taken out by the team with her constant nit-picking and cheerleading. Kevin and Ariel are clearly the leaders.

    • pinkbunny

Oh, and YAY for Robert the SweatMeister to be rolling on home!

  • Sally in Chicago

Thanks EW for HK….I love this show!

  • badtoy

I’m glad Robert finally went home. He was clearly the teacher’s pet, no wonder the rest of his team didn’t like him. If he got to come back, why didn’t the girl who broke her ankle last season – she seemed to have talent.

  • kayray

Agree that the girl (Choi?) who broke her ankle on last season’s HK should be given a second chance — WAY before having Robert back! But she didn’t have what it takes to be a HK star — misplaced ego and foul mouth. Also, does anyone know what happened to Julia (I think that’s her name), the Waffle House cook that GR was going to send to cooking school?

    • The Dude

I think she went to cooking school for 6 months or so, I’m not sure what happened after that.

I think the next season of HK should be an “allstars” match of sort. Have GR look at all of the past contestants who didn’t win (possibly limit it to those who survived to the merge) and pick a season’s worth of people to compete again to see if they can make it. There are a number of them that it would be interesting to see how they do with a second chance, Julia is one of them.

      • dani

Yes! And all-stars season – its time!

  • Lisa

I don’t think they should have asked Robert back. He looked heavier than he did last time and the show is not good for his health. I really hope that he will try to lose weight and be a happier person.

  • Joe CT

I agree with the rankings for the most part. The only nitpick would be swapping Sabrina and Van. There is just something missing in Van’s attic that takes him down a notch. I agree Robert was for ratings and his welcome was worn. What about Coi from last season? She had a shot and was denied by injury.

  • jake

Van is ok, just no brain trust. Kevin may be “talented” but he is creepy and reminds me of a serial killer. The women are MORE hopeless this season than last, no matter how many challenges Ramsey throws to them.

  • The Dude

The problem with Robert this season was that I don’t think his heart was in it. Sorry for the bad pun but seriously I think he was over confident in his skills and it got in his way. Also I think he felt like he was robbed of his chances last season and that carried into this season hence his outbursts. If the Robert of last season were competing he would have had a great chance of winning the competition. That all said he deserved to go home this week.

As for your rankings, I would lower Van down a peg or two. He’s a competent chef but his personality is annoying and I just don’t see him garnering that much respect from his team.

  • Dana

I am glad to see Robert go; all Robert should be concentrating on is a good diet and a healthy lifestyle. He knows he is morbidly obese and has all sorts of heart and health issues and look at the way he still continues to eat! It is Robert’s fault that he is overweight and unhealthy, no one else’s. I don’t blame the guys for not rushing up to hug him when he returned. They were one man down on the previous dinner service and Robert is lazy, he doesn’t help with prep, he went straight to the dorms to eat after returning instead of helping them in the kitchen, he came back down only at the start of dinner service. I have no sympathy for people who have health problems due to their own choices and actions, feeling sorry for Robert’s health issues is like feeling sorry for a drug addict who overdoses, is revived, and then continues to still use drugs. After Robert’s health scare the last season when he had to leave the show you would have thought upon his return that he’d have worked on loosing some of the weight, but nope he is still as large as ever.

  • LauraT

I’m glad Robert is gone; I don’t understand why Ramsay thinks so highly of him to give him another chance. He should have given the girl who sprained her ankle from last season another shot instead. Robert is a foul-mouthed jerk who talks a big game but hasn’t displayed any discernible talent. Good riddance.

My husband and I are rooting for Dave. He’s totally got the personality for Whistler. Low-key, laidback but hardworking. Give him a snowboard and he’ll fit right in. ;)

I know she’ll never win, but I think Tennille is hilarious.

    • dani

I agree, Robert is so wack and lazy. He is all talk, and he sweat in the food. You would think he would come back in better shape. He’s lazy. I don’t like that Suzanne either. I jumps on your station under the guise that she is helping and she is really throwing you under the bus. Safe it. I don’t see anyone stepping up really. They are all still making stupid mistakes.

  • Tenley

I didn’t like Robert last year and was about ready to throw in the towel with his continued stay this year. I didn’t get it. Seriously.

  • Alex

I’m thrilled that Bobby got kicked off. He is loud, crude & has no class. Tenille is too ghetto, but she is so funny. I think Suzanne will go next week.
My picks for the winner is Kevin.
Dave does look sick & I wish he’d get rid of his hat.
