'Idolatry': Danny Gokey chooses a post-'American Idol' genre (with Bonus Rocker sighting!)

For those of you wondering if I scored any Danny Gokey scoop at the American Idols Live tour stop in Albany, NY last week — aside from our “why do you like me so much?” exchange — the answer is most indubitably “yes!” Danny says he’ll be sharing some good news with his fans before month’s end, and that despite the R&B-Latin-country spread of his current tour set, he’s settled on a genre for his debut disc. Press play below to find out which musical path he’s taking, whether or not he’s planning to write his own music, and what he explains are his “two ways of singing.” And keep your eyes peeled for Bonus Rocker and Bonus Giraud sightings!

Oh, and a few housekeeping notes. Keep checking back this week at PopWatch for additional interview footage starring Lil Rounds and ANOOOOOOOOP Desai! Sadly, no Allison or Adam interviews this time around — I showed up during their day off from the promotional grind — but would it help if I mentioned ‘Noop Dogg is looking scruffily handsome in our exclusive interview? (Of course it would!)

Well at least him “going country” I will never have to hear him again! It’s probably his only shot because he would never make it in any other mainstream genre!

    • TM

Yeah, “mag” thanks for sharing your already biased opinion. I’m sure you’re somebody who really knows their music. What grade are you in now? So musical success doesn’t rely on a good voice anymore?(which Danny has) And for you to completely block out a musical genre? How sad for you! I’ll continue to enjoy the best music of any genre. Good luck, Danny! You are extremely talented!

    • Lee

Mag–you are an elitist snob. What’s wrong with country music? Do you have a problem with it? Go back to kindergarten. That’s where you belong.

    • Kurt

Glambert, you’re on the wrong thread! You just can’t say anything nice huh? If you don’t like Danny Gokey, then why READ about him?

      • mag

Now, who is being biased? I don’t really care for Adam either, I think Matt should have placed higher than Danny! They are giving the wrong guy a record deal!

    • Lyn

Hey Mag! You took the words right out of my mouth! Good luck Gokey.. As I recall, country wasn’t one of your strong suits either. Hope makin the little hearts with your fingers helps!

      • Candy

I agree Mag. Matt is so sexy, and his vocals are so right on! Don’t know why he placed 5th but that man has a bright future ahead of him! If he doesn’t get sign I am going to ambush 19 for signing boriiinnggg Kris and that “girl” Adam. :(

  • Lia

Anoop is even more handsome in Idolatry? Who woulda thunk it be possible?

    • Sandy

Oh, Puhleez . . . I’m laughing so hard it hurts! Handsome?

  • Annie

I actually really like Danny in this interview. And I usually do not like him at all.

Also, BONUS MATT IN THE BACKGROUND?! Is this real life?! *dead*

  • Vorona

Michael, you always make me like your interviewees a thousand times better than I did before you get at them. A real gift. Wishing Danny well.

Is that Adam and Kris at the meet & greet table in the background at the end? I see Scott and Matt.

  • sls

Danny is looking good and sounding really happy about his upcoming album. Can’t wait to learn more. Nice interview, Michael.

  • chelle wake

I love Matt in the background. I watched him and didn’t listen to Danny the first time I watched the video.

    • Lana

LOL Me too. I’m not ashamed to admit that the first time i watched my eyes were trained on the background for more Matt. He looks really hot in that shirt…

    • selena

I watched it back just to look at him

    • Lo

I was just going to say the same exact thing! Haha…no offense to Danny, but I completely missed everything he said because my eyes were glued to Matt.

  • Joe

Sorry, I was too distracted with the rocker sighting. So Danny, you were saying?

  • Darla Reynolds

Well, I have never purchased any country music, but if that is what Danny puts out, I will do it. Love his voice & he is just a super nice guy also. I can’t wait for the CD!!!

  • Ben

I think the idea of him going the Darius Rucker route is actually a pretty good idea if somewhat unexpected. I just hope that he stays away from traditional country which is not his forte. Can’t wait for the album!

  • Tina

I adore Danny, he sure gets a raw deal from all of you. He is a sweet guy, he is very talented, and he sings way better than Kris. I love he is going country, noone this season is doing that genre so he should be a superstar in no time. GOOD LUCK DANNY.

    • Lana

I think Michael Sarver might be going that route as well.

  • Tina

Adam wasn’t in the background, I believe that was Scott with his friend or family member who helps him get around.

  • Jack

    i dont care

  • me

What a tard. Seriously! Danny I can’t stand you “thinking” or not.

  • Elizabeth

Danny, yeah, love your voice & can’t wait for more music! Country, excellent, you’ll make it your own!

  • LoveDaRocker

Funny how the mere sighting of The Rocker threw off Danny’s train of thought, Slezak’s camera, and ended the interview. That’s star powew right there …

  • Midge

I wonder though, how is the country world going to take him seriously if he didn’t even know what the grand ole opry was before that week? Oh well. I think he could do well with it though. I still think contemporary Christian is more his thing.

  • grace

I’m really happy for Danny and I’m sure the country/pop genre will be great for him. Wish him all the best!

  • steph s

Can’t wait for Danny’s upcoming album, he looks so excited.
Modern country should be a great fit for his voice and message. And gotta say, what a beautiful smile he has.

  • gayle

Danny has a perfect voice for country, and I’m sue he’ll do well, especially since he’s getting great reviews from “My Wish” and “What Hurts the Most” on the tour — which are indeed country.

  • nunnya

Just want to put it out there that Nashville doesn’t always equate country music. Saftey Suit and Kings of Leon are both based in Nashville.
Having said that, I wish Danny the best. I would pay to go see him again in the right setting. I’m not sure about the country thing though. It will be awfully vanilla coming from him. No doubt that he can sing it…

  • Amy

Yay! I LOVE Danny! And I LOVE country! I’m so glad he chose a different kind of genre then just Pop or R&B. I wih him well and can’t wait to hear him on the radio and can’t wait to see what’s in store for him! :)

  • Bill

Yuck. He is so fake. I love his quote about “new” country and the direction of his album – “I believe that’s the take they’re going to take with me”. Now there’s some artistic cred. LOL Nice to see that he knows what’s going on with his own record.

  • Dave959

I will never get his scream from “Dream on” out of my mind..If I spot a CD with his picture on it the first thing that comes to mind is that awful Scream. Not buying any of his Music. but, wish him luck…

  • Ianaleah

Nowdays, ya can’t tell ‘country’ from ‘pop’ on many songs-and -example: Garth Brooks album hit # 2 on country chart and same time hit #13 on pop chart- sooooo danny should be able to do well and he has given it a lot of thought as well. I still believe he is a wolf in sheep’s clothing as a person, but as for singing, he should do well in ‘ country’- of course it’s hard not to do well in ‘country’, but his voice is great for singing that type song.

    • Elizabeth

I HOPE there’s a little wolf in there!

  • jacey

Oh Danny, Danny, Danny. I worry about you boy. You just seem so out of your element in the entertainment world. I hope you can get your sh*t together.

  • jen

I like how he compares himself to Carrie Underwood! LOL Dude, Carrie is a beautiful woman which really helped her career take off, besides an angelic voice. I don’t see you being as accepted in the country music field as you think. You totally ruined My Wish for me. That used to be such a hopeful uplifting song. The way Danny sings it makes it gloomy and depressing.

  • Pat

I doubt true country music fans are going buy Gokey music. This is obviously not the way he originally thought he would be going. He just does not have the style for pop music. I just find him boring. I saw him sing in Tampa and just found him blah. He makes no effort to spruce himself up, but then maybe he feels he is great looking and needs no help. He should ask advice from Allison, Kris and Adam on how to make himself more exciting. He really should have gone the Christian music route, looks are not so important there. He has no charisma, sorry.

  • LoveDaRocker

He really needs to sit down with some PR person and practice how he is going to sell himself to the country music world. To his credit, he said that country is a lot about message.
However, he needs to stop saying that he is not country (even if true, as long as he doesn’t try to pull a Jess Simpson and say that he is country he’ll be ok), that he doesn’t have twang (somehow sounds condescending), that this is where others are pushing him into (sounds like he doesnt want to do it), and, in general, any answer that he cannot explain in one sentence.

    • Sandy

Jessica Simpson is a Texan. Gokey is from Wisconsin. No connection there at all. He should stick to his Christian music — not that Christians would even buy it. I wouldn’t. He’s a big zero.

      • Ben

Keith Urban and Olivia Newton-John are from Australia.
        Shania Twain is from Canada.

So clearly your little theory about where you are from determines what type of music you can make doesn’t work. Sorry.

  • rob tyson

The idea that the Christian music industry would take him because no one else will is bogus. Looks don’t matter? They matter as much there as anywhere else… Christian music is not automatically “less than” because of it’s lyrical content.

    • mscisluv

But doesn’t Danny have the right credentials to be a Christian artist? I think that’s the point most people have been making. He was a church musician, after all.

      • rob tyson

The credentials for Christian music are the same as any other music… with the exception of belief.

  • Diana-TX

Darius Rucker route for him is perfect. Its not completely country with that twang, its a lot more modern and he’s gonna add a rockish/bluesy feel to the music. So hopefully it works out for him. I like danny but wow, this wasn’t a good interview LOL. they all say him and matt are the goofiest ppl on the bus, why doesn’t he potray that in the interviews??? i love you danny and seriuosly, thank god for twitter, cause i think i would still not like you hahaha. I do love your message though, but stop mentioning it about 65465465 times at every interview. still luv ya tho danny. keep it up LOL
