This or That: Butter sculptures on TV

butterpeanutsYesterday, Mandi and I were similarly intrigued by the 10 Sculptures Made of Butter from the Iowa state fair featured on Mental Floss. We agreed that butter sculptures should probably be on TV, but soon realized that our concepts of the show differed greatly. She assumed the series would be a documentary-style, real-life Best in Show, following the butter sculptors as they worked their magic before the state fair; whereas I thought it was obvious that the sculptures themselves would be the characters, perhaps a dysfunctional family (The Buttermans) who must “stick” together to avoid contact with their creepy neighbors (The Breadings and The Nighves). We leave it up to you.

    Just butter it!

    Annie,

There is a ‘hot’ script making the rounds- sold, I think, about a foster child who enters a butter carving contest and must best the local champion who’s won 10 years in a row. Little Miss Sunshine, Akeelah and the Bee kind of thing.

I love that even in the world of (Peanuts) butter sculptures, there’s a token black character! (I’m thinking they can get Daryl “Chill” Mitchell to do the voice.)

I’ve seen a documentary-style show on public TV about the woman who does the cow butter carving for the Iowa State Fair, and while it’s interesting, it wouldn’t hold my attention on a weekly basis. For that reason, I’m going to have to vote for the scripted series. Would it be animated, or stop-motion? Or would the characters be stationary, like those “Supermodelquins” in the Old Navy commercials?

That script titled, “Butter” oddly enough is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read. And, it is being produced.

Ha! I scoff at Iowa’s lame attempt at sculpting. Peanuts gang indeed. For true dairy artistry, they should have gone one state east to see the legendary Butter Cow at the Illinois State Fair. Now THAT is butter sculpting!

Hey, Chris, don’t you be dissing the Iowa State Fair butter sculptures! LOL We’ve had a butter cow since 1911 (see the head in the edge of the picture above) and this year it’s accompanied by a sculpture celebrating the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. Happily, Iowans were discerning enough to veto a sculpture of Michael Jackson. :-)

In Minnesota, the Princess Kay of the Milky Way, the dairy princess for the state of Minnesota and teh 11 other women competing for the title each have their likeness carved in butter during hte MN State Fair. See this link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Kay_of_the_Milky_Way

I just want to assert that I think the peanuts sculpture is racist… why did they feel the need to show the race of Franklin and none of the other peanuts?
