'Drop Dead Diva' renewed!

Categories: Television

Lifetime has renewed Drop Dead Diva for a 13-episode second season, after the show — about dead aspiring model Deb’s soul living life in the body of brilliant plus-sized attorney Jane (Brooke Elliott) — hit ratings highs with last Sunday’s sixth episode. I consider myself a huge fan for two reasons: 1) When Lifetime sent me episodes four through eight, I watched them in one sitting. (2) At the end of the episode 6, when Stacy (April Bowlby) kissed Jane’s lovestruck, new-to-Earth guardian angel Fred (Ben Feldman), and Grayson (Jackson Hurst), Deb’s ex-boyfriend who now works with Jane, joined her for dinner and said they could maybe finish a crossword puzzle together afterward, I applauded. In fact, I just rewatched the end of the episode on Lifetime’s site and clapped again. If you’ve got time and are in need of some more summer entertainment, I highly recommend checking out the show Sundays at 9 p.m. ET, or on Lifetime’s site, which has all the episodes.

All I can say about this Sunday’s episode is that something happens that made me email one of the show’s publicists and ask if it was permanent. (The answer, obvious but I needed confirmation, brought me back from the ledge. And p.s., it had nothing to do with Jane.) What would you like to see happen on the show next? Do you want the scene of Jane telling Grayson that she’s Deb in the promo above to be real or a dream? And seriously, how fantastic is Elliott? She makes this all so believable. I can’t wait to see the Broadway vet belt in a dream sequence with guest star Paula Abdul (Sept. 13); share the screen with Liza Minnelli and Delta Burke, who guest as dueling psychic sisters (Sept. 20); and sing with Faith Prince, who plays Jane’s mother (Sept. 27).

I dont want her to tell grayson at all. She’s nto Deb anymore, she’s Jane, and sooner or alter the two personalties will need to blend together. I want grayson to love Jane, not Deb in Jane’s body. Jane is more than just Deb.

      Agreed!

I am thoroughly hooked on this show. They did a great job with the cast. Each individual has been very believable in their part. Brooke Elliot is adorable! I enjoy watching the struggle between the character of stacy and the assistant (margaret choo). Their fight to be Jane/Deb’s best friend is entertaining, especially since they are both so vital to her life. and p.s. I think telling Grayson is a dream sequence and it should be.

I love this show. It is so nice to see a main character develope. I am happy they are keeping and I agree I so want Grayson to love Jane for Jane not for “Deb”. I like how Stacey is developing also.

This show is so good, despite the vapid-sounding title. Brooke Elliot is the find of the summer season. She can make me laugh and want to cry in the same scene. I hope the promo where Jane tells Grayson she is Deb is a dream. Now that the show has been picked up for a second season, it would be stupid to put them together so fast. Great television relationships usually result from a slow burn. In the case of Drop Dead Diva, I would like to see Grayson fall for Jane because of who she is now and because he sees some of Deb inside of her. There have been moments, to the credit of the Elliot and Jackson Hurst, when Grayson looks into Jane’s eyes that you get the sense he is seeing Deb. Seriously, if you haven’t checked out the show yet, tune in Sunday.

I think this show is great, and I agree with the comment about not telling Grayson she’s Deb. They should let him fall in love with Jane…she is just as beautiful as Deb was. In so many ways!

I thought I’d hate this show. I figured, at best it’d be TV’s answer to a Sandra Bullock-style Chick Flick. At worst, it’d be an “Ugly Betty” knockoff. Happily, I sat down and watched it and 5 minutes into it realized how completely ORIGINAL it is! And it works almost entirely because of Brooke Elliot! Classy, funny, beautiful and brilliant! Of course the guy will end up falling for HER, not just because he sees his dead fiancee in her…but, DESPITE that!

My only quibble…too much Stacey and not enough Margret Cho!

I LOVE DROP DEAD DIVA!!! I agree with all of you… Grayson needs to love Jane for Jane, not because of Deb… but I would like to see Jane beign anew because she’s not all Jane or all Deb anymore…

Mandi, I did the same thing! I dvr’d episode 6, the first one I had seen. I loved and ended up watching episodes 1-5 online in one sitting! Crazy but true. It’s an absolutely charming show, and it will make Brooke Elliot a big star. She’s wonderful in this role.

Love, love, love this show! Brooke Elliot’s performance is definitely Emmy-worthy. Hopefully, the academy continues to be as cable-friendly next year as it currently is.

  • Tee

Love this show! Brooke Elliott is fantastic and charming. I hadn’t been paying attention to how it was faring. I’m so glad it made it for another season.

  • monica

i have no idea why but i love this show. maybe it’s grayson or maybe it’s how funny she makes even the most boring topics.

  • Armando

I love this show. The firs time I saw it I counted seven crying scenes which would normally come across as silly, however, the show grew on me and on the second show it made me cry. This is my new favorite show. It still does not top the original Star Trek with the believable drama between Kirk, Spock…, but it is great.

  • Lisa

I was mad at the Kim/Grayson kissing scene, but I know that without the drama and heartbreak this TV show would be over before it hit season two. I love this show and I miss Fred, I was so sad to see him go. Happy he’ll be back though–hopefully!

  • Olivia

I love the show …i started watching it by accident cause there was nothing else on …. but it was the best accident EVER! i am hooked forced alll my friends and sister to watch and now they are lovin it as well!

  • Darcy

This is the best show I’ve seen on TV in years! I couldn’t agree more with the comments already written… Brooke Elliott is absolutely sensational! I love it all!!!
