Kristen Bell's 'When In Rome': Count the rom-com cliches!

Categories: Movie Trailers

It’s tough to find actors more beloved at PW HQ than Kristen Bell, Will Arnett, and Lee Pace. But good grief, this cliche factory I’ll generously identify as a movie trailer makes the baby Jesus cry:

In slightly over three minutes, I caught three of the 24 romcom tropes we’d retire: magic, working girl in need of balance (see: headset), and a clumsy heroine (watch out for the champagne glasses! and again, those other champagne glasses!). That has to be some kind of record. Also, dear screenwriters: Please find a more accurate nerd barometer than familiarity with Star Wars. Everyone — everyone — knows about Star Wars.

Despite these abominations, there are two bright points in this mishmash: First, against the odds, that’s actually a pretty funny line from Dax Shepard (“call a vet — these puppies are sick“), so it’s as if we’ve seen a unicorn. And second, I spotted Kate Micucci, one half of the hilarious musical comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates, so at least there’s that.

I want so badly for this just to be a crummy trailer for a secretly charming movie. Help me believe that, PopWatchers! I beg you!

Ugh. Ok actually I laughed…a lot. Cute premise, great cast. May actually go see it instead of waiting to rent…

Oh Lee Pace…why reduce yourself to such rubbish? You’re not even the romantic lead!!!

  • Jill

It looks like the main couple fall in love at first sight in Rome. And that seems to happen early in the movie. So what’s the point of the rest of it? Just to show Kristen and Josh’s comedic talents? To show how romantic NYC is? What?

  • Amy

Ohh..not even Wiill Arnett can save this one for me.

  • Brynna

Can’t wait! Love Kristen Bell and have decided she can do no wrong.

Yeesh. I simply adore KB, but that movie looks bad. I’m a fan of the rom-coms, but doubt I’ll be catching this one. Normally the cliches don’t bother me, but for some reason that trailer had me cringing the entire way through. No thanks.

Please, Kristen, no more voice-overs. It just reminds us all about how much we miss VM.

Meh… I’m on the fence here. I love KBell and Lee Pace (and I have no problem with Duhamel), but this looks like it’s about 10% cute, 15% lame, and 75% awkward. I might rent it.

Idk…I think the cast redeems the movie. I saw a lot of faces I would like to see in a movie. And also…Lee Pace doesn’t have a J-O-B anymore. It’s not like he was scoring huge roles before Pushing Daisies, then the television show he was headlining was cancelled. Why would he get leading roles in movies afterward? Sorry, rant over. But get off Lee Pace’s D. :)

    so sad

I’m automatically anti- any movie that advertises its lame, all-too-poppy soundtrack that far in advance. Was a Fox on the Run remake necessary? No. I do not think so.

    Kristen Bell deserves more.

  • Ann

Enough with the romantic comedies! There are so many of them and the majority are completely unoriginal and just dopey.

  • Amber

i liked it. yeah there are cliches but it’s a disney rom-com. kinda to be expected. looks like it’ll be a fun watch

  • Adam

Can we all decide to not have anymore movies where gorgeous, likable people have trouble finding love? How do Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel have a hard time finding a date? Preposterous.

  • catlin

hey the fox on the run remake you say(is this true) is done by a really good band called the academy is… so

    • Karen

That may be… and they seem to do it well but there’s nothing wrong with the original so my opinion stands. :)
