'Legion' trailer: Cool or crap with a Paul Bettany cherry on top?

I can see the Hollywood meeting now: ”What would be better than Paul Bettany as the one man who could save a diner full of thugs? Maybe if Paul Bettany was the Archangel Michael, and the thugs all had wings…” Behold this gloriously NSFW trailer for Legion:

Oh, angels…why can’t you just get along and not wage war on everyone with guns and swords and stuff? This five-minute spot doesn’t have me entirely sold. I mean, I lurve action movies, and this looks like it could be delirious fun. And there’s something cool about an actor as good as Bettany rolling with the B-movie-ness of it all. But it reminds me so much of 1995’s The Prophecy — that smarter-than-average angel-war flick starring Christopher Walken, Eric Stoltz, and Viggo Mortensen (as Lucifer himself) — and I’m not sure the comparison will do Legion any favors.

I’m cautiously optimistic. But how about you? Fixing to join the Legionnaires, or are you gonna wait for Bettany’s next religion-flavored supernatural flick, 2010’s Priest (in which he plays a vampire-hunting man of the cloth)?

I used to love previews for movies, but not so much anymore. Instead of teasing and whetting my appetite for the upcoming film, they give the plot for entire movie in a few minutes. I feel that I know the beginning, middle and end of this film already.

I’m with you- seeing the plot, including characters being killed, makes me less likely to invest anything….

ZOMG, are you kidding me?!? This looks amazing! Apocalyptic prophecies? Mysterious, supernatural children? Angel wars? Upside down crucifition? The QB from the Miami Sharks? Roc?? Sign. Me. Up.

The overly long trailer kept me somewhat interested, but it looks like pretty standard apocalyptic fare. I don’t quite get why this was a redband since the only thing objectionable was the f-word from the demon granny – or did I miss something?

  • Dee

This looks like one of those wtf!!!!! movies that are so bad it’s good.

Ya know, I wasn’t so sure about this trailer but Grandma kind of sold me – loved her. I liked the FNL connection; the movie and TV versions. The trailer was too long, but this absolutely the kind of movie my friends and I will go so after we’ve put away enough margaritas.

see not so; I can’t post a comment correctly to save my life!

    yay Tyra got a job

If Dennis Quaid doesn’t get an Oscar this year than the whole things rigged, I say.

Also, I like that the posters have commented on grandma’s cussin’, but not the fact that she tears out a dude’s throat. With. Her. Dentures.

    Just sayin’.

This movie has Netflix written all over it.

Its just too bad there was no room for Keanu. Sweet, sweet Keanu makes the demon wars all better.

    Mmmm… Keanu.

Fra-kin-ayy! Folks, that trailer actually just got me excited for flicks again. Sure, you may know the better part of the plat to this movie via the trailer, but come on! It doesn’t look like this one was going to be breaking any new ground anyway. Its one of those fun movies you get to be razzled and dazzled by.

I think its like taking the best parts of Constantine, The Prophesy, Terminator, and Supernatural (with angels that are pricks and douches) and mixing them with excellent CGI!!! Plus we get to see Kate Walsh get killed in some horrific way by the things most of us like to think protect the world and us! Score for that!

Gah… um.. no, thanks. I’ll pass on the nightmares.

Glad that Paul Bettany is getting some good & large roles. He always does a great job, & I’m inclined to see any movies he’s in.

    • Chris

A large role? Definitely. A good role? I dunno. Movie looks entertaining in a schlocky kinda way. Just wish they trailer hadn’t shown so much.

  • Adam

The moment where he took the shotgun from Dennis Quaid made me cry with joy. Can I line up for this right now?

  • Mark Jerome

It looks fascinating in a bizarre sort of way. Still, The Bible was a reasonably entertaining work of fiction, I supposed it’s about time it had a sequel.

    • jay001

I agree. Give a Chris Walken cameo and it is golden.

  • Snarf

Saw this on AICN and while it looks good they give waaaaay too much away in the trailer.

  • cassi

It looks good but not impressive. The angel scenes looked way too gimicky for my taste, sorry but Phrophecy and Gabriel had way cooler angel fight scenes than Legion. Bettany’s scenes were great but the rest is nothing special. Even Constantine did a better job with its angels than this movie.

I heard this movie was coming…I was also told that it was based on Hollywood’s perverted interpretation of the Last Days (they were right) . I wish a movie would be made of the book “This Present Darkness” now that would be a movie I would pay to see. It has the facts straight ..God loves us …Satan hates us…read the Bible
