I will take any opportunity to see The Lord of the Rings in a full-blown theater, my love for those films is so great. Heck, I almost pilgrimaged to Austin to see it at the Alamo Drafthouse, where they’ll feed you whatever the Hobbits ate — while they’re eating on screen! (Hobbits eat rabbit stew, you eat rabbit stew. Hobbits eat lembas bread, you eat…Ritz crackers, probably. Hobbits gallivant on the bed, you sit uncomfortably in your seat.)
So imagine my geek-giddyness when I heard that Radio City Music Hall — probably the most famous theater in the world — will be screening The Fellowship of the Ring on Oct. 9 and 10. What’s more, there will be a 300-piece orchestra playing all the music live. Live! Now, while I might not be as much of a score wonk as others, Howard Shore’s Oscar-winning music is positively majestic. Plus, I’m hoping there will be some renaissance fair-meets-Rocky Horror-style shenanigans afoot.
It’s early enough to book passage: Would you be up for going to see Fellowship rock Radio City? Or is this much high-toned geekery too much?

where you been Marc??? this is hardly new news but i guess my LOTR love is far greater than yours lol… I been got my tix and I dont know if you were aware but they have a LOTR trilogy concerts years ago at the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra which I went to and ate up. I am also eagerly awaiting the Star Wars concert coming out soon. I’m a big film score nut here… Listening to Bernard Herrmann as I write this…
If it were possible, I would totally be there. Sounds incredible
If this is the same set up that went on tour with original sketches, folks– don’t miss it! So moving and absolutely fantastic!!! I was lucky enough to see it in Chicago at The Auditorium Theater and Howard Shore came out at the very end– yeah, I think all of us megafans left puddles beneath our seats!
This is NOT the set-up that went with the sketches. This is the movie with a live soundtrack, not just a symphony playing selections from LOTR. Much, much different.
For any readers in the greater-DC area, this movie/concert was performed at Wolf Trap last summer. This year, at the end of August, will be LOTR: Two Towers, with the same film plus live music setup, again at Wolf Trap. It’s a fantastic evening, and if you’re remotely nearby you should go!
Yeah, I saw that advertised on the Metro! Full chorus, too!
I’m in the chorus for the Wolf Trap gig this weekend, and I also did the FotR concerts last year. Great fun, so come out if you are in the DC area.
Thanks for the heads-up! I immediately booked tickets as an Anniversary gift for my husband. It’s going to be incredible! In fact, it’s surprising no-one thought of this earlier!
I saw this last year in Winnipeg, and it was great. I hope for your sake they also have the 100ish person choir and 5 soloists, like we did. They sealed the deal.
I’ve been wanting to get tickets to this for the past few months…hopefully I’ll come up with the money. I’ve already seen both Video Games Live and Distant Worlds: The Music from Final Fantasy this year so it would be a nice addition.
This concert event also coincides with the release of the book and rarities CD for Lord of the Rings Music. It is different than the ‘Lord of the Rings Symphony’ which has toured for years with local choirs/soloists/orchestras performing selections from the trilogy with beautiful sketches (see http://www.howardshore.com/works/lotrsymphony/).
The author of the forthcoming book, Doug Adams, has written extensively about the process and posted news at http://themusicofthelordoftheringsfilms.blogspot.com/.
