'Psych' does the laser scene from 'Entrapment': Always funny?

On Friday’s season premiere of USA’s Psych, which found Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (the underrated Dulé Hill) tailing an elusive art thief (guest star Cary Elwes) in British Columbia, Gus was forced (by Shawn) to work his way through a laser maze in a gallery à la Catherine Zeta-Jones in Entrapment. It is my position that, 10 years after that film’s release, such scenes are still funny — and, in fact, will always be funny. Watch below, then weigh in with our poll after the jump.

I don’t know about every time, but Shawn and Gus style – definitely funny. Although I wanted Dule to have to work in a dance move of some kind. Welcome back Psych!

Please have more Psych! There are millions of abused Psych-os waiting for more scoops/praise/information/polls/videos about their favorite show!

A great Psych last night. So glad to have it back.

  • sam

And it is better than The Mentalist in every way.

  • christine

this is the second time they’ve mentioned the mentalist. i love that they’re not shying away from mentioning their copycat!

Damn straight! I was *so* miffed when I saw that first commercial for the premeir of “the mentalist.” I knew right away they were totally stealing from psych. I can’t get enough of them pointing that out in this show! “A carbon copy…”

I LOVE that Psych is taking shots at The Mentalist. It’s hilarious!

Was it just me or has Cary Elwes not aged well? He looked puffy.

    • JenR

Wait, that was Cary Elwes? I didn’t even recognize him! I was thinking that I liked the actor and hoped the character came back as they hinted he would. Now I understand why.

Freaking love Psych!! Last night was great!

I don’t get the whole “The Mentalist is a rip-off of Psych” thing. I watch both shows regularly, and they don’t seem at all similar to me, once you get beyond a tag-line level comparison. I mean, come on. One show is a comedy and one is a drama. It’s a little like saying that every new vampire show is a rip-off of whichever vampire show came before it.

There was an Entrapment laser scene in the Get Smart movie. Ergo, not always funny.

  • chaosrachel

    best show on the air.

  • Kalie

I’m so glad “Psych” is back. I love Shawn and Gus.

  • Kristina

Yay some Psych love on EW! Can we get a reviewer please?

  • Bob

    C. Zeta Jones. lol
Psych tries too hard sometimes, but at least it tries. Nice to see EW giving it a little pub.

It was a great episode, and Dule doing to Entrapment scene was funny. But you know what I missed was the introduction when there is a guest on the show. Shaun always introduced himself as ‘Shaun Spencer’ and gives Gus some ridiculous name. That have to keep that going because it gets me every time.

    • Sina

Exactly! That one of the best things about Psych is when Shawn introduces himself and gives Gus a crazy name and Gus either goes with it or gives a surprise look. That and their love of pineapple can not change. They are still doing the “wait for it” thing. I was surprise tho that since Psycho is so pop culture friendly, why didn’t they use a quote from The Princess Bride. I was expecting Shawn to say “As you wish”

Are you kidding! The man in black jumps off the building, pirates fine art, and fantisizes about breaking out of prisons. I can’t believe it took me until almost like 2/3 of the show to catch it all. Comic Genius!

god i love this show. can we please, please, PLEASE get a TV Recap already??? it boggles my mind that you guys continue to recap trashy reality tv, but don’t bother with quality, entertaining, scripted stuff like ‘psych’ or ‘burn notice’. gah!
that being said, enjoyed the first episode, but wasn’t as punchy/witty as in previous seasons. hoping that shawn/juliet thing doesn’t weigh the show down.
oh and the mentalist thing? HI-LARIOUS. i love how they keep referring to it as a carbon copy. too funny. i thought that, too, when mentalist first came out – i kept thinking, ‘oh wait, ‘psych’ can’t get any respect, but they’re going to make another show about a fake psychic??’
