'The Blind Side' vs. 'The Open Road': The Southern accents showdown

The trailer for The Blind Side surfaced yesterday, and while some bemoaned how abhorrently schmaltzy it looks — and truly, it is the world’s schmaltziest trailer — I was more worried about Sandra Bullock’s accent. (I’m also worried people are going to think the book is lame, which it resoundingly is not. Read this excerpt, called “The Ballad of Big Mike.” I love you, Michael Lewis.)

“Big Mike” Oher was recently a first-round draft pick for the Ravens, so, happy endings all around.

Anyway, I thought that was my limit on intense Southern accents for the week, until another trailer materialized, and holy outrageous drawl, Batman, Jeff Bridges is out of control.

P.S., Justin Timberlake, your movie looks atrocious.

Both these accents make the baby Jesus cry, but only one can be dubbed The Worst Accent This Week. I think Bullock’s sounds like a choir of angles compared to Bridges. Agree? Disagree? Set me straight, PopWatchers.

Jeff’s accent is completely over the top, but I have to go with Sandra for worst. It’s so obviously fake that I can’t stop laughing when I hear it. Jeff’s is over the top, but at least it sounds almost real.

I believe I’ve read The Ballad of Big Mike, so I might actually see The Blind Side, despite Sandra Bullock’s hair (ugh). She’s actually Southern, so I’ll give her a pass on the accent. Jeff Bridges, on the other hand, definitely wins the worst accent prize. And the movie DOES look awful. I like Kate Mara, though.

Margaret, are you kidding me? I’m from the town over from Michael’s high school and where the (real) Touhy’s live, and I think Sandra Bullock’s accent sounds pitch-perfect and not over the top at all. I also thought the trailer, and movie, looks really good, I’ll definitely be seeing it after following his story so closely. This debate is ridiculous.

umm….Sandra Bullock’s accent is remarkably perfect for the Memphis area. Margaret have you been watching too much Gone With the Wind?

The blind side actually looks really good. Surprisinly good for the type of movie, made me tear up a bit. I’m going to go see it when it comes out.
As for the accent, it sounds genuine to me, Margaret seems to be just picking on something, to pick on something. Also as for the hair, the real mothers hair actually looks like that :) I saw a quick picture of her on ET when they showed the trailer.

Well I don’t know. Jeff Bridges sounds EXACTLY like my dad :-)

As an actual southerner who typically gets incredibly annoyed with bad southern accents, neither of these sound that bad to me. Sandra Bullock is from the south and her character in that movie sounds spot on for the type of woman she’s supposed to be. As for Jeff Bridges, he sounds just like my father-in-law.

Both southern accents sound like alot of southerners I know. Both movies also look pretty good to me. The Open Road looks like my type of movie.

I agree both movies look good to me. I’ll go see them. Don’t see the big deal about the accents.

  • Tyre

The accent isn’t over the top at all. I’ve seen much worse, heard much worse from actual southerners.

Ohhh, this old lady loves jeff bridges. Can’t wait for that movie. I don’t think the accents are over the top either.

  • Jeff

    Margaret,

Have you ever even been to the South?

  • graeme

Bullock’s accent sounded fine, and boy, they nailed the hair and wardrobe for her for the Southern Belle character. She’s almost unrecognizable. So Bullock will have 3 movies out this year? Wow, she’s back.

  • Kristen

I live in Mississippi, and I have to say, both of these accents are pretty good. Also, The Blind Side trailer totally made me cry.

  • Susan

I’d have to agree with everyone who says that the accents are fairly accurate. Maybe people are so used to hearing bad Southern accents in movies, they think that’s what we really sound like?

  • Todd

I’m from the South myself and as someone whose accent only shows up after a few to many libations. Sandra’a accent is spot on. The movie looks very timely – like someone from the “Real Housewives” actually did something real. I’m rooting for Sandra. I’ve loved her for a long time and after the good “The Proposal” her time back in the spotlight is long overdue. Here’s hoping her new ventures are a great success!
