'The Lovely Bones' trailer makes our Must List. Do tell -- what's on yours?

Remember five years ago when that trilogy about the midgets trying to return jewelry to Pompeii made billions of dollars and swept the Oscars? And how two years later its director tried his hand at resuscitating another famous property and was met with a lot of “meh”s and “it’s too long!”s? And how in the intervening four years everyone has asked “is he doing The Hobbit?”, “what about Halo?” and various other sweaty, agitated questions?

Well fret no more, Peter Jackson fans! The Lord of the Rings director is back this December with his adaptation of Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones, the first trailer of which went live yesterday. Check it out:

Yeah? Having never read the book I can hardly speak with any authority on its translation to screen, but those images…I mean, they’re scrumptious. Just EDIBLE. This is the most visually exciting treatment of a horrific subject I have ever seen! Move over, What Dreams May Come — there’s a new afterlife fantasy in town.

What do you guys think? Will it match up to the book? Can Mark Wahlberg play a convincing father? Why does Peter Jackson look so uncomfortable in the introduction? OH, and what’s on YOUR Must List this week? List up to three items from current TV/movies/music/books/games/online. And be sure to explain WHY you’ve made your selection, too — we love to hear your thoughts! Don’t forget your e-mail address, in case we decide to use your submission in the magazine. Deadline is Thursday, August 6 at noon ET.

A Very Potter Musical – http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=C76BE906C9D83A3A It’s a parody of the Harry Potter books and movies and it’s one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time. Instantly quotable with some wonderfully clever characterizations – especially Draco Malfoy and Vodemort. And it’s actually really well done with some great songs and performances.

i am eagerly awaiting this film… Ive been a fan of Peter Jackson’s since Dead Alive and I am glad to see him doing a film that seems to be very much in the vein of Heavenly Creatures…

It’s looks like another masterpiece from Peter Jackson! He did an amazing job interpreting the Lord of the Rings trilogy to the big screen and reinterpreting King Kong for the new generation. I have no doubts that Lovely Bones in the hands of Peter Jackson will be just as great. He knows how to translate books into movies. The trailer has me impatient and excited for December to arrive!

It looks great, but gave so much away! I couldn’t believe they showed that scene in the house! If I hadn’t already read the book, I would be kind of irritated.

Lovely Bones looks great but when is Peter Jackson going to do something that wasn’t a book or a remake? All of his movies are great but I really want to see something that came from his mind.

He’s a director, not a writer. Therefore, even if it’s original material, it will most likely be penned by someone else.

Actually, he’s both. Look at the credits of most of his films, and you’ll see him listed as a co-writer.

Actually, all of his early work was completely original. Look to Bad Taste, Dead Alive, and Meet the Feebles. And he has had a hand in writing all of his films, more-so his early works than new, but he still contributes a great deal.

Kubrick never did a movie that wasnt based on another a medium… nothing wrong with being an adapter- you dont wanna be stuck like George Lucas who’s only had 3 original ideas…

  • Scott

Peter Jackson has written or co-written original screenplays. The Frighteners and Dead Alive were both original stories.

Apparently ‘The Lovely Bones’ trailer is on my must list. I’ve been excited to see the movie since I read the book and last night my fiance called me at midnight to tell me the trailer was online. I was in bed, but it was still very sweet of him.

  • Stacie

Yay Peter Jackson! Too bad about Mark Wahlberg. I don’t care for him much. I will see this movie.

    - “Adam” — As an individual with Asperger’s Syndrome, it has been a disappointment to see so few films on the subject make it to theaters. And what’s more, the ones that did tended to be downright awful. Which is why I’m excited about “Adam”, as it is the first film to accurately depict what it’s like to live with Asperger’s, and what’s more, it’s actually, y’know, good.
    - ABC shows on Hulu — Rejoice! All your faves from the Alphabet network (LOST, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Desperate Housewives”) are now available to watch on Hulu, which, for many computers — I’m looking at you, PCs — is far more reliable than ABC’s official website.

    1. (500) Days of Summer soundtrack – Great artists ranging from Simon and Garfunkel to Regina Spektor make this a great listen, especially considering how well they match the movie in tone.
    2. The Fantastic Mr. Fox trailer – It looks like Wes Anderson is about to do it again, and in stop-motion animation, no less!
    3. Michelle Pfeiffer in Cheri – As an aging cortisan in love with a much younger man, Pfeiffer is extremely impressive.

    Julie & Julia
    (500) Days of Summer movie and soundtrack
    The Hurt Locker
World’s Greatest Dad – Great dark movie- Robin Williams knocks it out of the park.

    On my must list:

1.Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series on DVD. This should go without saying, but this show was tremendous. It touched on so many relevant topics and touched so many hearts. It is a shame the Emmys have ignored it.
    2. Dollhouse 1×13 “Epitath One.” Because if this HAD been the last episode of Dollhouse ever, it would have been a great and satisfying ending. The warning of the dangers of technology (much like that of BSG) were very real and Felicia Day was awesome (as usual).
    3. The new season of Mad Men. Does this really need an explanation? It’s Mad Men! If you don’t love this show, then you can just get the hell out.

TRUE BLOOD TRUE BLOOD TRUE BLOOD … it’s hot, sexy, and causing near cardiac arrest with every episode! If you’re not watching it … you must not have a pulse!
