'Pumas': Isn't Jennifer Aniston better than this?

jennifer-aniston-puma-movie_lJennifer Aniston will star in a movie called Pumas, which will follow two 30-something women as these wily feline creatures go about their daily routine of wooing younger men and marking the boundaries of their territory with their urine. Then suddenly! Jen ‘n’ friend wil “take a French skiing vacation that challenges their expectations.” We’ve already rolled our eyes at Courteney Cox‘s TV series Cougar Town, which premieres in September. Now this? Pumas? Really? Jennifer Aniston, what the hell are you doing?

I’m gonna go out on a limb here (watch out below, teenage boys walking home from school!) and guess that it’s probably okay to give the still totally popular women from Friends their own projects and not title said projects after wild animals. Enough already. That’s about all I have to say about Pumas, which I hope will be sponsored by Nike.

'America's Got Talent' recap: The airing of grievances

Like a bad hangover the day after a wild, Hunter S. Thompson-inspired party, we’re all pretty fed up with these Vegas episodes of America’s Got Talent. Yesterday — in our most commented-on recap since Kevin Skinner took the stage over a month ago — you shared your frustrations with the show and its judges, most particularly the way they dismissed a quarter of their second round crop AT THE AIRPORT then proceeded to deliver baffling decisions to the remaining contestants. Kari Callin out? Yodeling dominatrix in? One magician, but not two?

What?

Josh Wolk's Pop Culture Club talks 'Orphan': Ludicrous, disgusting, entertaining, or all three?

the-Orphan_lWelcome back to the Pop Culture Club, where every Thursday we get a movie, TV, or DVD assignment, and then meet back here the following week to discuss it. Last week I assigned the bad-seed thriller Orphan; at that point I hadn’t read any advance reviews, and little did I know that this movie is why the term “bats–t” was invented.

Before we go any further, let me say that this post will have SPOILERS APLENTY: If you haven’t seen the movie yet, back away slowly. Because really, there’s no point in seeing this movie at all unless you’re freshly stunned by the craziness as it comes at you.

'Saw' the videogame: Too much?

Filed under: Videogames and tagged:

saw-the-videogame_lAn article on Cinema Blend today calls out video game publisher Konami for its upcoming Saw game, saying it “has no portent moral message or even a directive in which the overt violence and scenes of mutilation correlate to something sane people might find enlightening, entertaining or fun. In other words, Konami is publishing a game that’s as sick, twisted and pointless as the intellectually-deficient movies of the same name.” The story’s headline says that Konami should be “ashamed” of itself.

Time to list those Musts, people! (Our pick: Green Lantern and his 'Blackest Night')

The geeky haze of Comic-Con 2009 may be dissipating and your boss less than thrilled at the prospect of you wearing a Fantastic Four costume to work, but that doesn’t mean the funny books fun has to end! On the heels of recent blockbuster miniseries like Marvel’s Secret Invasion or Civil War, DC Comics recently launched its own big summer event: the company-wide “Blackest Night” storyline. Tied directly to Green Lantern and the consequences of his latest intergalactic adventures, “Blackest Night” is a company-wide event that introduces a new Lantern Corps — surprise, the Black Lanterns — with the power to raise the dead. All those DC characters who have died in the past few years? Aquaman? Firestorm? BATMAN?…Well, they might not stay dead for long.

'Heroes' Season 4 trailer: At what point do we stop caring?

I look at this trailer and the only person I’m interested in is Robert Knepper’s carnie colony colonel. No one else — Sylar, Nathan and Peter Petrelli, Claire and Noah Bennet, Hiro and Ando — moves the needle in the slightest.

How did we come to this, a rampant apathy? Are you still invested in Heroes? Does its return fill you with hope that the producers have learned from their past mistakes, or does it have you scanning the listings to see what else will be on Monday nights?

'Twilight': 'Eclipse' recasts Victoria. Who else is replaceable?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

RACHELLE-LEFEVRE-New-Moon_lAs you’ve no doubt heard, Lady in the Water star Bryce Dallas Howard will replace Rachelle Lefevre as the vampire Victoria in Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight franchise. (Do we think Lefevre, pictured here at Comic-Con, already knew?) Summit Entertainment cited a scheduling conflict, which UPDATE: Lefevre has now confirmed is a role in the independent movie Barney’s Version (starring Dustin Hoffman and Paul Giamatti, according to IMDB). She says she was “stunned” by Summit’s decision not to accommodate her 10-day commitment to Barney’s during Eclipse‘s production, which will run more than three months. While this could support one of the alternate theories running on our News Briefs blog — producers wanted to replace Lefevre with an actress they believe could better embody Victoria’s wrath (which I could buy) — some in the media are expecting fans to be outraged because “They don’t want anything to change in their Twilight Zone.” Personally, I’m not that upset for what this means as a moviegoer (though hearing Lefevre say she was blindsided does make me sad for her as a human). UPDATE #2: Summit has released a statement claiming it was the one blindsided when it found out, only on July 20, that Lefevre would need to miss rehearsal and days of principal photography on Eclipse, which begins shooting in early August.

Universal cries 'Wolfman' again

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

wolfman_lRemember when Universal screened the trailer for The Wolfman at Comic-Con? Benicio Del Toro seemed perfectly cast as the doomed Larry Talbot, and the gritty look of the film at least promised an appreciation for the character’s legacy in a way that, say, 2004′s Van Helsing did not.

Steve Zahn on 'Conan': Quirky or confused?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

God bless Steve Zahn. He’s forever the best part of Tom Hanks’ That Thing You Do, and his imbecilic Glenn is one reason Out if Sight is on eof the most rewatchable movies of the last 15 years. Plus, anyone who saw Rescue Dawn knows that he’s more than just a grinning goofball. But then there’s last night’s guest appearance on The Tonight Show, which makes me wonder.

'The Colony': Obsessed yet?

Watching The Colony, the new Discovery show from Deadliest Catchs Thom Beers in which 10 strangers will survive for 10 weeks in a post-catastrophe Los Angeles, you realize what it’s like to feel terrified and useless. Or, at least I do. I just sit there asking myself questions, like:

• Can you imagine if this show had been on Fox instead of Discovery? Gone would be the people with actual skills (engineers, a doctor, an ER nurse, a contractor ex-con, etc.), and in would come the contestants from Paradise Hotel (which, full disclosure, I was also once obsessed with).
