'Prince of Persia': Exclusive first look at star Jake Gyllenhaal!

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged:

Prince-of-persia_l For Jake Gyllenhaal, playing Prince Dastan in Jerry Bruckheimer's epic Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, due May 28, 2010, was a chance to get into some serious action. (Paparazzi photos of Gyllenhaal on-set have appeared previously, but this is the first official shot of him in character.) "I'm tired of taking myself so seriously," says the actor, who found himself sword-fighting, climbing walls, and jumping off of buildings as part of the prince's quest to find an enchanted dagger and turn back time. "It's nice when a stuntman turns to you and is like, 'Actors don't normally do this.'"

For a sweet, glossy copy of the photo and other exclusive first looks, be sure to pick up this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly, on newstands now.

Quote of the day: 'Harvey' edition

"Harvey and I warm ourselves in these golden moments. We have entered as strangers — soon we have friends. They come over. They sit with us. They drink with us. They talk to us. They tell us about the big terrible things they have done, and the big wonderful things they'll do. Their hopes, their regrets, their loves, their hates. All very large because nobody ever brings anything small into a bar. And then I introduce them to Harvey. And he is bigger and grander than anything they offer me. When they leave, they leave impressed." — Elwood P. Dowd (Jimmy Stewart) in Harvey

Julie Chen blogs 'Big Brother': Season 11's first elimination

Julie-Chen-Big-Brother_l I can’t believe we are in our 11th season and 10th year! Over the years, Big Brother has almost become synonymous with summer at CBS. We have a saying now: “If it’s summer…it’s Big Brother!” It has become like a familiar friend you look forward to seeing every summer. A guilty pleasure where you’re allowed to love, hate, and judge total strangers being real and human. I think we all see a bit of either ourselves or people we know (love ‘em or hate ‘em!) in all of the Houseguests.

EW asked if I would start my weekly Big Brother blog with an overview of random topics encompassing my perspective on many things Big Brother. So, here goes…

But first (wink), let’s talk about the elephant in the EW blog room…The Chenbot! I was horrified when my best friend from college first told me about my Big Brother nickname. But, there was a side of me that kind of also got it right away. When I played dumb and asked her to explain it…it was exactly what I expected to hear. Then I was kind of embarrassed and yet unsure how to feel or react. (Chenbot was hurt…does this mean the Chenbot has emotions!?!?!). But, when I told my agent to get some sympathy, he made a funny remark in a robot-like voice and said something like…”Oh-yeah-you-did-not-know?” And he e-mailed me a link where someone edited together all my “But firsts…” (You know who you are, Ben Mandelker!) from the live shows and I laughed my head off. I WAS the Chenbot. Each delivery was EXACTLY the same — different hairdos, different outfits…same damn robotic delivery with precision and zero emotion. That’s when I said to myself, “Can I blame em? I AM the Chenbot!” The Beatles’ lyrics of “I am the Walrus” went through my head but I substituted in Chenbot.

'Whip It' trailer: Ellen Page + roller derby = Drew Barrymore's directorial debut

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Who knows if Whip It — Drew Barrymore's look at the empowering world of female roller derby starring Juno's Ellen Page — will be consistently funny or just deliver a couple of direct hits. For the moment, let's just celebrate having Juliette Lewis back on the big screen, where she hasn't been since 2006's Catch and Release. I'm serious, by the way. You never know what she's going to do, which makes seeing her alongside first-time director Barrymore, Saturday Night Live's Kristen Wiig, and Eve exciting.

New 'Sherlock Holmes' trailer debuts to applause

Granted, an audience moments away from seeing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on opening night at New York City's Ziegfeld is slightly excitable, but I believe the new Sherlock Holmes trailer would've warranted applause on any evening. It's those final seconds and the realization that Jude Law, as Dr. Watson, is going to keep up with Robert Downey Jr.'s singular take on Holmes punch-for-punch…

The Guy Ritchie-directed movie, which hits theaters on Christmas Day, is on Daniel Radcliffe's Must List. Is it on yours?

Taylor Lautner Bicep Watch: 'Interview' shoot

We're all about Daniel Radcliffe at the moment, but not wanting to miss the chance to dust off our Taylor Lautner Bicep Watch category, we offer this link to his interview with Interview magazine. Not much new here — gaining 30 pounds of muscle to keep his role of Jacob in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, he went from a men's small to a men's large; the natural athlete (karate, football, baseball) would love to do a real action movie — but the photos sure are pretty. As is the footage in the video below. Best Bicep Moment comes at 50 seconds in.

'Harry Potter' geeks: Vent your frustrations about the movie changes here!

Half-blood-prince_l Saw Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at 9:30 yesterday morning — the old person’s midnight screening, let’s call it — and enjoyed it fine, except for the three moments that drove me absolutely batty because I made the mistake of re-reading the book this weekend and I’m apparently way more anal than originally suspected.

I’m gonna file this under SPOILER ALERT! and encourage those of you who’ve already read the book and seen the film (that’s at least $22 millions-worth of you, if I understand the math) to join me after the jump, read about my quibbles, and contribute your own in the comments…

Who's your favorite pop culture canine?

Tagged:

Benji-marley_l Today, the news broke that Patrick Dempsey would be starring in Universal Pictures' big-screen adaptation of Garth Stein's novel The Art of Racing in the Rain,as race-car driver Denny Swift — alongside his costar and the book'snarrator, a dog named Enzo who is blessed with "a near-human souland a philosopher's mind."

Enzo, it seems, is the latest in a long line of Hollywood-bound pups with "near-human"attributes. (Animated films, ofcourse, are full of anthropomorphic critters other than dogs, fromDisney's classic characters to Rhino the Hamster in Bolt to the entire cast of Madagascar.)

But cats and hamsters and oddly accented lemurs don't seem to get thesame kind of screen time as man's best friend in live-action movies andTV, and that's probably just fine with our little Kibbles 'n Bits buddies. After all, who could top Benji (pictured, top), the plucky little mixed-breed? Or the heroic, doomed Old Yeller? Frasier's Barcalounging Eddie? Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston's oafish bundle of joy Marley (pictured, bottom)?

But that is for you to tell me, Popwatchers! When it comes to Hollywood doggy-style, who's your all-time favorite canine?

'Project Runway' and spoons: A new meet-the-designers video!

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

Only 35 more days till the Aug. 20 debut of Project Runway, folks! Are we psyched? I sure am — and I'll be back to riff all about the new season in my Runway TV Watch, version 6.0. As we inch closer to the starting line, itty bitty bits of information about the sixth season have started to trickle out. The designers were revealed last week. Today, Lifetime released a promotional video that further introduces us to the new cast. It's pretty straightforward, intercutting soft-focus (so very Lifetime!) interviews with familiar-looking snippets from the sewing room. Among this year's lineup of hopefuls ready to throw down with the Serger, there's a couch-killer (Nicolas); a Samantha Ronson lookalike nudist (Ari), which could make for an awesomely awkward interaction with season six guest judge Lindsay Lohan; a dude with Tim Riggins-y hair who's been deemed the hottie (Logan); and a dour-pussed Yugoslavian lady named Gordana who provides what is by far the best sound bite of the bunch: "When you grow up eating with a spoon, you don't think of making business out of that spoon." Woot! Please tell me she's banked more of these nonsensical verbal nuggets. And if so, make her stick around a long, long time. (Speaking of which, if you're hungry for semi-spoilers, the current issue of People has a page on six standouts from the upcoming season, as chosen by Tim Gunn.)

Take a look at the promo video and tell me you're all hungry for more Gordana wisdom. Auf Wiedersehen for now!

A fitting tribute: 'Farrah's Story' nominated for Emmy

Farrah-Fawcett_l Lost among the major-category chatter about this morning’s Emmy nominations is the recognition (waaaay down the list in Outstanding Nonfiction Special) of NBC’s brutally revealing documentary about Farrah Fawcett’s battle with cancer, Farrah’s Story. If it wins, it’ll give the star her only Emmy: She’s been nominated three times in acting categories (in 1985 for The Burning Bed, in 1990 for Small Sacrifices, and in 2003 for a guest appearance on The Guardian) but she never won. A statue this year — which would go to her as an executive producer of the project — would give the sex symbol the most tangible evidence of the elusive acclaim she often sought but never quite captured. And it would be well-deserved: While the special was uneven — sometimes sappy, sometimes a rare breed of too revealing — it was, inarguably, brave, the realest reality TV could possibly give us. She is, also inarguably, a television icon who’s gotten short shrift even in her death, as the news of her passing quickly got swallowed by the more shocking passing of another icon named Michael Jackson. Wouldn’t it be lovely to see her get more recognition than the standard Emmy-death-montage moment? As for her chances at winning: The toughest competition will come from yet another household name born of television who made another touchingly distinctive documentary, Michael J. Fox for his Adventures of an Incurable Optimist.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Are you happy to see Fawcett nominated? Will you be rooting for her?
