'The Closer' First Look: Mary McDonnell with Kyra Sedgwick

The-closer-mcdonnell-sedgwick_lWhen Mary McDonnell guest stars alongside Kyra Sedgwick on The Closer starting Monday, brace yourself for the Clash of the Strong Female Leads of Cable. Former Battlestar Galacticapresident McDonnell (far left) plays an internal affairs investigator who gets in the way of Kyra Sedgwick’s Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson in a three-episode guest stint on the TNT drama starting July 20. They’ll both be poking around the deaths of two officers whose funeral they’re dressed for here. "I’m a fan of the show," McDonnell says. And as such, she geeked out on this particular sequence, which takes Deputy Chief Johnson out of her Southern Belle suits and into dress blues: “The wonderful thing for me was to be involved in the scene where we see Brenda in uniform for the first time.”

What do you think, PopWatchers? Are you psyched to see President Roslin and Deputy Chief Johnson square off? What do you think of Brenda in uniform?

Rob Pattinson vs. Daniel Radcliffe on 'Jimmy Fallon': Who won?

Okay, so the two stars didn't actually appear on yesterday's Late Night. But Fallon did hilarious impressions of each one dissing the other's movie (check out the clip above).

Pattinson: "It should be called Harry Potter and the Half-Ass Film."
Radcliffe: "What do vampires do best? Suck."

I'm going to declare Radcliffe the winner on the strength of his "Call Super Cuts-icus" spell. What about you, PopWatchers? Who wins the imaginary insult war?

Sienna Miller & Jonny Lee Miller: Exclusive First Look at Broadway's 'After Miss Julie'

Filed under: News and tagged:

After-Miss-Julie_l Sienna Miller and Jonny Lee Miller are coming to Broadway this fall in a new production of After Miss Julie, which begins previews Sept. 18 and opens Oct. 22 at the American Airlines Theater (227 West 42nd St.). EW has the exclusive first image from the show, seen here, and it looks powerfully sexy and sultry as the pair share a moment together on the kitchen table. Hot.

The play — which comes from New York City's Roundabout Theatre Company — is an adaptation of Miss Julie, August Strindberg's 1888 play about sex and class. This production moves the action up to an English country house on the evening of the British Labour Party's historic landslide win in the 1945 election, which director Mark Brokaw says is much like the situation around "our last election here with Obama." He continues: "There was this great collective release. It was a moment of seismic change and possibility."

The story, as you can probably guess from the photos, is one of romance — the twist is that Sienna's character, Miss Julie, is rich, while Jonny's character, John, is her chauffeur. So it's a clash of social classes and crossing boundaries that probably shouldn't have been crossed. But, on this momentous election night, Brokaw says, "Everything seems possible and all borders seem to have been potentially shattered." Teases Brokaw, "It's a story about a night that shouldn't have happened but was destined to happen."

What do you think, PopWatchers? Does this photo pique your interest in After Miss Julie? Have you seen a production of Miss Julie or the adaptation before? Do Sienna Miller and Jonny Lee Miller seem like they'd have real chemistry?

Is 'G.I. Joe' really that bad? Early reviews say maybe not...

Filed under: Movies and tagged:

When a headline that reads “Not As Bad As You Think” starts counting as good news, then you know things have gotten low. That’s what Cinemablend.com wrote yesterday regarding G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, a movie that’s had its share of bad press including erroneous news reports (debunked by EW) that costar Sienna Miller had to wear fake boobs in the movie. Cinemablend points out that, bad buzz aside, some early Internet reviews, particularly from Ain’t It Cool News, suggest that the movie might be all right after all. What do you think PopWatchers? Are you going to see G.I. Joe? Has the backlash to the backlash begun?

'Futurama' getting new voices for Fry, Leela, Bender, and others

Futurama_l Just when I was getting really excited for the revived Futurama, total bummer news emerges: The voice actors are going to be different. Who's going to Zoid my Zoidberg?

Twentieth Century Fox, which is still producing the series even though new episodes will air on Comedy Central, is recasting the major voice roles for the show. That means no more Billy West (Fry, Professor, and Ziodberg), Katey Sagal (Leela), John DiMaggio (Bender), Maurice LaMarche (Kif Kroker, among others), or Tress MacNeil (Mom, and several others). Worst!

Fox released a statement saying "We love the Futurama voice performers and absolutely wanted to use them, but unfortunately, we could not meet their salary demands. While replacing these talented actors will be difficult, the show must go on. We are confident that we will find terrific new performers to give voice to Matt and David's brilliantly subversive characters."

Is it still Futurama with totally different voices, PopWatchers, or can this news bite your shiny metal — well, you know.

'SYTYCD': Cat Deeley blogs Top 10 week

6a00d8341bf6c153ef01157171710e970b-800wi Happy Birthday to you/
Happy Birthday to you/
Happy Birthday, dear Nigel/
Happy Birthday to yooooouuuuu!

Thank goodness Nigel is only 60 once! I don’t think any of us could cope with the partying twice! Nigel held his 60th birthday in Lake Las Vegas. It was a three-day extravaganza involving karaoke, golf, sunset cruises, gambling, dinner and dancing, and culminating in a giant conga line that included Mary, Adam, Mia, Wade, Tabitha, Napoleon, Tyce, and yours truly circling the lake at 2.30 in the morning! As I’ve said before, I can’t dance, but I do…. What I lack in talent I more than make up for in enthusiasm! The music played till morning, the champagne flowed continuously, and it’s fair to say a good time was had by all! Mr. Lythgoe certainly knows how to throw a great party!

And the good news doesn’t end there. The show has been nominated for five Emmys this week. Tyce, Mia, Wade, and our very own Dmitry are all up for the choreography award. I love the fact that a past dancer from the show has been on this incredible journey, from dancer, to choreographer, to Emmy nominee… dreams can come true! It just goes to show what an incredible platform and opportunity this show is for our dancers. The makeup team has also been nominated for an Emmy. They’re led by Amy Strozzi, who also does my makeup. She’s incredibly talented and passionate about the show, but more importantly she taught me how to properly use the Americanism “AWESOME”! Good luck to all!

Highlights this week for me: Travis’ routine for Jason and Jeanine- heartstoppingly beautiful! And bless him, he was sooooo nervous! It’s great to see past contestants come back to the show; it really does feel like a family. Ade’s solo:The back flip thoroughly deserved the standing ovation he received!

Evan and Kayla’s ballroom: Despite being vertically challenged and falling during rehearsals, the twosome performed brilliantly. Evan also brought in cookies from his grandma. I don’t think I’m exaggerating, but they were a little slice of heaven.

The results show was a showstopper!!!! The opening number was a Geisha piece by Wade and Amanda Robson set to a Janet Jackson track. Visually it was absolutely stunning, a work of art. Melissa was just beautiful as the Japanese queen, ethereal, graceful, and dominant!

The Black Eyed Peas raised the studio roof when they performed their No. 1 single. They’re one band who always looks like they’re having the best time — in a way you just can’t fake. They’ve been great supporters of the show since the very beginning and it was lovely having them back.

Then it was over to America. For the first time this season, the viewers were in complete control. The judges can no longer decide who stays and who goes, it’s all down to you!

We had to say goodbye to Kupono and Randi. I’ll always remember Kupono’s kindness and smile and I’ll continue to worship at his alter of fashion. Love his unique style! Randi was so self-deprecatingly funny and worked so hard,  and let’s not forget her other asset, the one Mia Michaels created a dance around! I can’t wait to see them both on tour…

Don’t miss next week! Ellen is coming onto the judging panel, which should be hilarious! And Thursday is our 100th show, featuring some classic SYTYCD routines, appearances from star choreographers, and, of course, Katie Holmes pays homage to old-school Hollywood. Stop reading…and start setting your DVR!!!!!

'Where the Wild Things Are' Disney video from 1983 foreshadows Pixar coolness

Tagged:

Now that Where the Wild Things Arefever is really heating up thanks to the upcoming Spike Jonze film, this proof-of-concept demo from 1983seems particularly cool. Too bad John Lasseter's career never took off.

Just kidding – he's one of the genius forces behind the delight factory known as Pixar. I'm pumped for the Jonze film, but there's part of me that would love to see a Pixar adaptation, too, a spooky version of Monsters Inc. if you will, which already draws, in someways, on the Maurice Sendak classic. (Exhibit A, exhibit B, the defense rests, gavel gavel.)

Thoughts, PopWatch nation? Are you as surprised by the quality of 1983 computer animation as I am?

'Twilight': Meet Australian actor Xavier Samuel, cast as Riley in 'Eclipse'

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Xavier_Samuel_lDirector David Slade has cast his first new role in Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight series. Summit confirms that Australian actor Xavier Samuel has been tapped to play Riley, Victoria's favorite recruit in her army of newly-turned, strong-but-inept vampires built to aid her mission of murdering Bella. Unknown in the States, Samuel has costarred in the layered Aussie surfing film Newcastle. (Watch the trailer; he's dark-haired, Clash T-shirt wearing Fergus). Below, a clip from the movie in which Samuel enters at :46. After the jump, a shirtless scene. (What?) And a couple of trailers for another film called Further We Search.

What do you think of Samuel's casting? I buy him as a college student who would fall prey to Victoria…

DVD sales drop again: Are you buying or renting?

Filed under: News and tagged:

Transformers-2_l When was the last time you went to buy a DVD, then thought twice and opted to just rent it instead? Probably pretty recently, if the latest data from the trade organization Digital Entertainment Group is any indication. Released yesterday, the report indicates that DVD sales — a usually reliable source of cash for movie studios — have been hit hard by the recession, dropping 13.5 percent for the first half of the year. As for the time-honored tradition of renting videos? Rentals rose 8 percent over the same period. It’s kind of a no-brainer to me: If you’re looking to cut back on your entertainment budget, rentals are a great way to economize. I mean, do you really need to own a copy of He’s Just Not That Into You forever and ever? With all apologies to Jennifer Aniston and Co., probably not.

One thing the LA Times pointed out in its coverage, though, is that certain blockbusters seem to be bucking the trend, still selling well even in these our troubled times. The two titles they mention: Dark Knight and Twilight (apparently, you really do need to own Robert Pattinson forever and ever), which indicates that this summer’s big box office hits, like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, might do the same.

Personally, I’ve always been pretty selective about the DVDs I shell out money for, recession or no. How about you? What movies or TV shows will you still buy and which ones are rentals only? And more importantly, which ones might you have bought last year, but are deciding are not worth it this recession-plagued year?

Cat Deeley's Emmy snub: Quelle Horreur!

Cat-deeley-padma_lSeriously, Emmy "jidges"? Seriously? Okay, I'm with you on most of the nominations — yay for Jim Parsons and the cast of 30 Rock! but how in your bloody minds could you leave out Cat Deeley (pictured, left), the venerable host of So You Think You Can Dance?

Is anyone else as angry as I am over this egregious reality host snub? Sure, folks like Jeff Probst (Survivor) and Ryan Seacrest (American Idol) certainly deserve to be in contention. But I'll take Cat any day over Top Chef's Padma Lakshmi (pictured, right) and, yes, even Project Runway's Heidi Klum, two reality hosts who snagged Emmy nods for proving they can simply read off a cue card. (Or maybe voters were swayed after watching Padma eat a burger?) Cat, on the other hand, has gone above and beyond: During her four-season tenure as the host of the awesome dancing reality show, she has displayed genuine enthusiasm for the show's subject, provided a shoulder for the dancers when needed, and placed a contestant's set of grillz in her own mouth for laughs. How does that alone not garner a nod?

Anyone else screaming bloody hell?! Are voters too busy during summer vacation to watch the Fox hit? When will Cat get her due?
