Rapunzel's tower: I want to go to there

Rapunzel_lYes! Disney has released concept art from its upcoming 3-D animated feature, Rapunzel, based on the original Grimm’s fairy tale. You can view all of them here — the ones of Rapunzel and the prince walking in the forest and chilling on a boat are particularly gorgeous and should be viewed in full size. I love how the “tower” (pictured, right) is basically an adorable castle on a stilt — if I lived there, I’d feel lucky, not punished. Whoops.

I’m confused by two things. First: What’s with the balcony? I thought Rapunzel’s tower had neither a door nor a stairway and only a tiny little window at the top. The balcony’s looking a little too ‘Aladdin’ for me. Second: I can’t tell if Disney has abandoned its signature Female Heroine Hair Hood — the worst offenders of which are Ariel and Princess Jasmine — for the upper region of Rapunzel’s ‘do. The outline of her hair in the balcony photo indicates the same sort of “wing”-shaped structure Ariel had going on, but I think it might just be due to gravity in Rapunzel’s case. (This magazine scan would support that theory.) I just don’t want a “business at the top, party on the bottom” situation with the ‘Punz, you know? It should all be free-flowin’. This is really important to me.

Where is the maze of thorns? That was always my favorite part. And the swarm of blackbirds ready to pluck out our hero’s eyes…

Grey DeLisle is in this, so I am now excited. She’s one of my favorite voice over artist currently working.

I was always surprised they didn’t make this movie back during their heyday, during ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ period. It would’ve fit perfectly back then. I love Disney Animation, and Kristin Chenoweth!!, so I’m excited to see how this one turns out.

I enjoy Ariel’s hair. As a child, I always thought it was really cool. Plus it works underwater just fine because it can float. Jasmine’s hair, on the other hand, is not my fave. I think Rapunzel’s hair will be awesome no matter what. And the discrepancies between the story and the movie will be many. I’m sure the balcony is just the beginning.

    Annie, you’re crazy! Ha!

Kristin Chenoweth is not in the movie. That was the old “shrekified” version that was tossed long ago. There has been no casting officially announced, and any voices you read on the internet are from the previous versions and rumors.

Re: the balcony… it doesn’t look like the balcony is on the tower at all. And it’s just a concept piece.

I agree with Jeffrey about the balcony. If you look behind Rapunzel and the Prince you can see another castle or something like that. In the picture of her tower you can tell its freestanding with no other castles/towers in sight.

I am definitely getting an “Aladdin” vibe from some of those balcony pictures.

I don’t know any inside information about this movie, but I have looked at I think all of the art that has come out for the movie, and Rapunzel looks a loooot like Kristin Chenoweth. If she isn’t doing the voice, then I will be very surprised that they made Rapunzel look exactly like her.

    it’s only concept art.

that’s not definitely how it’s going to look.

    chill out.
