'Tron Legacy': The Comic-Con footage that made me a believer

I’ll admit it right up front: When Tron 2.0 was first announced a couple years ago, I didn’t care that Disney was making a sequel to Tron. I’ve got fondish memories of the original Jeff Bridges-Bruce Boxleitner videogame-gladiators flick, but never once did I wonder to myself, “I wonder what Flynn and Tron are doing today.” And then I saw this footage of the newly moniker’d Tron Legacy at the San Diego Comic-Con:

Smooth, fast, wicked. I know this is just test footage that was shot more than a year ago, but seeing it in 3D — as it was projected at SDCC — I’m officially a convert.

What do you think? Is this a Tron you can get behind, or will all the svelte CG in the world not get you off the couch?

I too am a convert. The trailer is absolutely stunning. The graphics and the look of the movie is really like no other movie we’ve seen before. I’ve watched the footage twice a day and everytime I’ve been in awe of how beautiful and exciting and futuristic it is. A classic in the making.

Only one question – are they planning on more than one movie, maybe a trilogy?

On twitter, during Comic Con EW Popwatch wrote “Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, Garret Hedlund talk ‘Tron Legacy’ at EW’s Comic-Con video suite.” Any chance that you’ll post that video?
The trailer looks amazing and I can’t wait to see the movie next year.

Just watching the shot setups, you can tell even here that this must look BEAUTIFUL in 3D. Heck, it looks beautiful in 2D. I need to go rent the original. I’m afraid I just missed the pop culture cutoff, age-wise. This looks unmissable though.

Transformers 2 had amazing special effects too.
Until we get an idea on plot/character, I’m not holding my breath.

In fact it doesn’t look much different than the original. Computer FX improvements stopped when Jurassic Park was made and have not gotten better. We need to go back to intricate model work. Hang the cost.

Jurassic Park sparked many new innovations in VFX (3d camera tracking, for one) that have only elevated the art and science of it [vfx]. In some regards I agree with you, but overall untrue. IMHO

All I can think is that Tron Legacy is going to be really amazing to watch in 3D!

I did not expect my jaw to drop. This looks amazing – I am definitely excited now.

I will be there opening day. This footage was just amazing.

This movie won’t be worth the pixels used to make it unless Joey Hudoklin’s flying disc skills are used in it.

Haven’t seen the original Tron but Tron 2.0 got be intrigued.

If you guys haven’t seen Tron yet, go out and buy the 20th anniversary edition. 5 hours of extra goodies. Charming story, ground-breaking effects. Just gorgeous.

I’ll be there for Legacy on opening day.

I watch the trailer daily. Jeff Bridges co-staring, Lisberger consulting… rumoured Boxleitner cameo… I’m gonna burst!

    Flynn lives!

    End of line.

This is stunningly cool. I spent many quarters playing the game… and watched the movie a dozen times. To pull CGI back into where it was invented is nostalgic and awesome.

Tron had a plot although sorta silly but it had one. So much today doesn’t, hopefully they are pushing forward. Flynn built these games and was robbed (and took it back). Now he seems vengeful. MCP bite me. (I guess in modern times that would be Microsoft who stole everything they make money on.)

I hope this movie does well… I’ll probably see it in a movie theater, something I haven’t bothered to in a long time because hollywood gives us such crap.

What won me over is that this is a sequel and not a reboot. The look of the cyberworld is as if it aged 30 years as well, new yet familiar. Even the sound effects bring me back! The fact that they pieced together the original cast and producer from the first, add the cult following, movie has right ingredients to do well. END OF LINE..

For those who may have missed it, like the AUTHOR, TRON 2.0 was a video game, not a movie. TRON: Legacy is an entirely new project and, in the TRON franchise, the 5th project. There was the original game, consisting of 4 mini-games, the Discs of Tron, the original movie, the video game Tron 2.0 and Tron: Killer App for the XBox.

    • Jack

Actually from what I’ve read of the preliminary plot line for Legacy it closely resembles Tron 2.0 game.
