John Cusack acknowledges the idiocy in 'Hot Tub Time Machine'...and we think we like it

Tags:

Now that we've had a few days to digest the gloriously moronic (and NSFW) trailer for John Cusack's upcoming time-travel comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, we can't help thinking that it will either be the stupidest movie Rob Schneider never made or a so-dumb-it's-brilliant instant classic.

Well, after speaking with Cusack about it, we're more convinced than ever it will be the latter.

"We just finished shooting it a week or so ago," says Cusack, who stars in the film with Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke and succinctly describes the film as "four idiots who are thrown back into the '80s to go boldly where men have gone before." "It's a ridiculous film. You're pretty much either sold with the title, or it's not for you."

By the way, if you haven't seen the trailer, here you go…

We'll admit it. The first time we watched this thing, our immediate reaction was: What is a guy as A-list and respected as Cusack doing in a movie about a hot tub time machine called Hot Tub Time Machine? But if you think about it, it makes perfect sense — it's nothing more than a return to the kinds of movies the actor made at the beginning of his career.

In fact, just ahead, allow us to take you on a stroll down numbskull memory lane…

The Sure Thing (1985)

Better Off Dead (1985)

One Crazy Summer (1986)

So where do you stand, PopWatchers? Will Hot Tub be painfully stupid or so-dumb-it's-brilliant? What do you think about Cusack's decision to dig back into his goofball past for this project?

What does he have to say about the idiocy in 2012?

I love it! Glad to see him loosen up a little. Comedies used to be his “bread and butter.”

I think it’s AWESOME. I fell in love with those movies (and Cusack) back in the ’80s when I was a kid, and I’ve been missing those types of comedies. This is very welcome news!

Which one of these movies doesn’t belong with the others? Uh, Sure Thing?!!! I think that shoulda been a Hot Pursuit clip. As for HTTM, I’m sold!

Better Off Dead is one of the funniest movies ever made. I’m so glad to see John returning to the wackyness that made me love him so all those years ago.

I don’t know if I’ll go see it in the theater, but this looks like something I’ll definitely Netflix. It’s good to see John Cusack in a movie like this. It really is almost like he’s getting back to his roots!

Love it! John Cusack, one of the most underrated actors out there, is known for doing these types of movies to support his habit of producing socially conscious movies. I have been waiting for something like this! Love him!

Scary…but I actually WANT to see this!

Seeing Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson sold this one for me…this could be most excellent.

I figured that he is just doing it for the cash in order to fund the smaller but kickass projects he normally does.

Like Con-air, only with out awesome Malkovich.

I am all over this!!! I have loved John Cusack since I first saw him in Class, and re-living those films of the 80′s with him will be fantastic—this is great news!
