Memo to the Academy: Give Christian Bale an Oscar before he disappears from Earth

A big skinny christian

Poor Christian Bale. The guy has already gone super-method on us not once, but twice — when he  essentially starved himself for roles in The Machinist and Rescue Dawn — but it looks like he's ditched the hamburgers and Ensure once again based on photos from the set of The Fighter, his new movie about a drug-addled boxer. Seriously, the Academy: How much weight does Bale have to lose before you finally award him an Oscar? What don't you f–king understand? Nicole Kidman only had to don a fake nose to nab the prize! But let's just go ahead and give him one before he slips through a crack on the street, 'mkay?

Does Bale's repeated attempts to become emaciated for the sake of his art freak you out as much as it does me? Especially when actors like Matt Damon — who lost 40 pounds to play a heroin addict in Courage Under Fire — have been told their heart health could suffer from such a rapid diet?

Rescue Dawn is a really awesome movie.

Yes, it is freaky! Every time he does it, he is shaving years off of his life! I appreciate that he is a fine actor, I just don’t want him killing himself for movie roles. That’s just dumb.

He’s going at it the wrong way. Robert DeNiro PUT ON weight to win an Oscar for “Raging Bull”.

I don’t know-how come people aren’t alarmed when Russell Crowe packs on 63 pounds for Body of Lies-Crowe who is 10 years older and several inches shorter than Bale. Isn’t that just as dangerous if not more?

    • Liz

Crowe took a year to lose the weight slowly and correctly and in a healthy way. And he was absolutely hammered for it in the tabloids, Apparently they prefer stars who go on crash diets.

  • Jenny

I really admire Christian Bale. I mean, this guy takes his profession seriously, but it definitely is alarming that he gains and loses an enormous amount of weight for his roles.

I dont care how many pounds Bale looses he doesn’t deserve an award. The awards are actually for acting unless they want to start a new category for him like way loss or biggest a**hole on set.

One outburst on set doesn’t define his acting ability. Was it a jerk move? yeah. But get over it. He has apologized numerous times for it, and I for one won’t hold it against him for future roles.

    • Shawn

Based on one incident? Is no apology good enough?

Christian Bale is probably, if not the most versatile actor around. He usually makes great choices when it comes to film roles. He seems to base his decisions on the quality of the role and the movie and not just whether or not it is going to make a ton of money. He is able to do any accent out there with perfection. And has. He relies on his dedication as an actor to transform his body for a role and not on the make up department. He has transformed flawlessly from a fantastic child actor into an even better adult actor. Again he truly is one of the finest actors around, so why in the world would the Academy recognize his talents by giving him an Oscar (she says with sarcasm)? That would mean they would actually have to wake up and pay attention. Your article is a perfect example of why I NEVER watch the Oscars.

i’ve only been saying this for years – not because of his rapid weight gain/loss (which really should mean nothing in the overall oscar race), but because the guy is one of the best actors this generation has produced. and for the haters who only know of him through the tabloids, rent some of his earlier films if you want proof of his talent (hi, even at age 11 or 12, he was brilliant). i do hope he stops with the radical weight stuff, although i do appreciate his dedication to his craft – i’d prefer to see him in films many years from now, rather than him die of a heart attack of something.

Perhaps this explains his temperment (or lack thereof) Whatever, he should give his diet/starvation tips to Britney’s ex, K-fed.

  • balesoffun

Agreed. Christian Bale is the best actor of his generation. He is phenomenal from what I have seen (and I was on set) in THE FIGHTER. And he doesn’t seem so emaciated in person, but he is thin and it really does work for the film. PLEASE GIVE HIM AN OSCAR BECAUSE HE IS A PHENOM.

  • Briana

He’s a legend. He needs an Oscar! Come on Academy, look at this guy!

  • Adam

If he does win an Oscar, hopefully during his acceptance speech noone steps into his light…

His best movie was empire of the sun – no weight loss required

  • Edie

Yes, he absolutely should be recognized. He’s a phenomenal actor. Rescue Dawn was great. He was also incredible in Harsh Times. His acting in the Machinist is often overlooked because of his weight loss, but he was incredible in that, too. The Prestige, 3:10 to Yuma, and don’t forget American Psycho are all among his best roles. And the thing about Bale is that he’s sooooo incredibly different in each role that people don’t even realize that it’s him. But the academy awards brown nosers, not necessarily good actors… so I’m not convinced that he’ll be recognized. I hope I’m wrong.

  • Joey

Ugh I don’t like him. He was so boring in Batman and Public Enemies. Haven’t seen Rescue Dawn though.
