Get out of here man, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a rousing, inspiring classic with unbelievable acting by perhaps the best of all-time, Jimmy Stewart. If there’s any movie that makes me want to play hooky (if it wasn’t Saturday), it’s that one.
Mr. Smith will never, ever become outdated, and maybe applies better to current times than 1939! If there’s anyone who hasn’t seen this film and reads this comment, I promise it will hearten you.
’94-’99 was the era of great films from Pulp Fiction to Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
1984 was the year for comedies. Sixteen Candles, Tootsie, Bachleor Party, Ghostbusters, etc.
I really need to get around to seeing CHUD!
1984 was exceptional, but 1999 was groundbreaking. American Beauty, Being John Malchovich, The Matrix, Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense, Fight Club, Election and (don’t laugh) Notting Hill – just to name a few!!!
1939 was an incredible year for films, my all time favorite movie is “Wuthering Heights” with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon and that came out that year. However, in 1984, I graduated from high school and I think I saw about 90% of the movies you listed at the cinemas. Of course, “Footloose”, “Sixteen Candles”, “Ghostbusters” , “The Karate Kid” and ” Romancing The Stone” were my favorites from that year. To this day, most of those movies bring back so many memories for me. Thanks for the reminder.
Best year in film has to be 1967.
Bonnie and Clyde, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, The Gradute, The Dirty Dozen, To Sir, With Love, Cool Hand Luke, In The Heat Of The Night, Who’s That Knocking At My Door
I LOOOHOHOHOOOVE “The Brother from Another Planet.” Thanks for throwing some respect to that flick!
I correct myself, Tootsie was ’82. 16 Candles was my favorite from 1984.
1984 did have a lot of memorable movies. And the best soundtracks too-Beverly Hills Cop and Footloose.
Don’t forget The Neverending Story came out in 1984!
Of course 1939 will always be the best movie year ever, but my favorite movie of this year would have to be The Terminator, it really did revoltionize the action movie and was all around a very well made film. Also give props to Ghostbusters, The Killing Fields, Amadeus, Sixteen Candles, Police Academy, and Places in The Heart.
Hmmm, you can’t be serious. Not a bad year of course, but you’re seriously stretching.
Also, I have to throw in my hat for 2006 and 2007.
1988: Rain Man, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Coming to America, Big, Die Hard, The Naked Gun, Beetlejuice, Working Girl, A Fish Called Wanda, Bull Durham, Midnight Run, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Last Temptation of Christ, Scrooged – just for starters.
Gosh, you’re right. How can Lawrence Olivier, Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, and Cary Grant compare to that titan of acting talent, Rick Springfield?
You did mean to run this story on 1 April, didn’t you? Didn’t you?
