Comic-Con: Joss Whedon wows 'Dollhouse' fans with a never-aired episode and season two teasers

Proof that it pays to come to Comic-Con: On Friday, rabid JossWhedon fans got to see an unaired 13th episode of Dollhousethat takes place 10 years into the future. Positioned as a veritableroad map for the fledgling series, the episode tries to address theapocalyptic outcome of the Dollhouse world – i.e., what happens when toomany memories are wiped and everyone becomes, well, zombies. Shot on video for about $1 million less than what atypical episode costs, according to one source, the episode features mostly new charactersdiscovering a deserted dollhouse, but Eliza Dushku's beloved Echo makesa cameo appearance. Sound confusing? Well, relax — it's not going to airand potentially upset the show's mojo (though it will be included in the DollhouseDVD). But Whedon did promise this to his fans at Comic-Con: "We intendto honor what you saw here."

That's true: Moving forward, Whedon plans to save Foxsome cash by only shooting Dollhouse on video (trust us, it still looksgood). Here are some other promises for season two: Angel alum AlexisDenisof and The Sarah Connor Chronicles' Summer Glau will makeappearances. And Whedon will "continue to deal with the abuse of powerand what it brings out in the characters."

That prompted one fan to inquire about Whedon'sobsession with big corporations. "Have you been in America?" Whedonreplied. "I consider myself a great documentarian… There is power andmanipulation [everywhere]. That's why I like this show so much."

I cannot wait to see that episode. I still can’t believe FOX wouldn’t air it.

I’m here at Comic-Con and couldn’t get into that damned panel. Whedon fans are Legion! However, I did grab the Comic-Con exclusive version of the 1st season, so i look forward to seeing “Epitaph.”

Dollhouse was horrible, and i can’t possibly imagine why anyone could be interested. I like all of Joss Whedon’s previous stuff, but seriously, Dollhouse fell off the turnip truck. The concept was laid bare in the first 2 episodes. There was no mystery.

yes, Weedgreenpowerranger, the first couple were weak but the last 6 or 7 were awesome.
i was excited when an angel alum was going to be on the show. i hoped it was julie benz! she would be amazing on dollhouse

They need more than to cut the budget to make doolhouse viable.
hire good actor to start with, Echo doe snot work at all she is always the same no matter what!
And frankly, it looks more like prostitution than anything else, with how many people must they sleep before they wear the title!

The episode they’re talking about was outstanding, WAY better than anything in the main series. It was very dark and Whedonesque, though it felt more like Firefly than Buffy/Angel.
    .
Basically, it’s in a future where personality-wiping and body stealing technology becomes a global pandemic. It appears that China developed a weaponized form of the personality switching/wiping technology, and successfully turn half of America into an army to destroy the other half.
    .
If season 2 is truly going in that direction, there’s some great stuff in store for us.

It would have been confusing, but they should have aired this episode as the premiere of season 1. People would have been much more pumped about the show.

Really? The Whedon-bots thought the Dollhouse episode was good? I don’t believe it!!!

“The concept was laid bare in the first 2 episodes. There was no mystery.”
Therein lies the problem. The ORIGINAL pilot Joss created, on DVD only, was full of mystery. Chock full. The story was brilliant from the start. In trying to appease the network, the story was mangled and distorted in first several episodes. They did stink. Anyone who thinks this show s*cks but hasn’t watched the DVD will continue to suffer from the same delusions.

My friend is dating A.J. (lt Gaida from BSG) and they were having dinner with Tahmoh Penikett when Joss Whedon joined them. She said he was the most down to earth person, and when she asked what he did (she’s not nearly the nerd I am, and so didn’t recognize his name), all he said was that he was a producer. I think that’s part of why he has so many fans; despite our rabid nature, he doesn’t buy into his own hype or think he’s anything great (even though he clearly is!). Plus he makes interesting, dark shows that challenge viewers rather than pandering to them. I understand why people are put off by Whedon fans, but think it’s a shame they let it impact their opinion of his work. Glad to hear Comic-Con was such a success!

Well…tell your friend to feel friend to put Tahmoh on blind dates…I volunteer.

Terminator was better. Bring back Terminator!

  • Gusar

I don’t think Dollhouse is as bad as lots of people say, but Terminator is obviously the superior show.

  • darmini

What do you mean by shooting on video? What did they shoot on before? Someone please explain.

  • echo

They shot on film last year but they got their budget cut as a condition of their pickup, so season two will be shot on video. Doesn’t look as good but it’s cheaper.
