Director James Cameron had just two questions for the audienceof 6,000 at today’s much-anticipated Avatar sneak peek at Comic-Con. One: “How many of you have ever wanted to go to another planet?” And two: “Are you ready to go to Pandora?” That was Cameron’s introduction to 25 minutes ofnever-before-seen footage of Avatar, which will hit theaters on Dec. 18. Attendees saw Sam Worthington’s character travel to the world of Pandora as an Avatar and interact with theNavi and the other wild, mystical creatures around him.
Donning 3-D glasses for the footage, the audience went wild for Cameron’s crazy-inventive world ofPandora, for which he created everything from floating mountains to theblades of grass to the language of the native Navi population. Cheeringwas most enthusiastic for a clip in which Worthington’s Avatar wrestles a vicious pterodactyl-type creature to attain a new mode of air transportation. Cameron is clearly not just making a cool sci-fi movie here; forhim, Avatar is socially-relevant filmmaking, regardless of howotherworldly it appears. “Avatar may have a spoonful of sugar with allthe sci-fi and special effects, but it has a conscience. It makes youthink a little bit about how you interact with nature and your fellowman.”
Cameron also made an intriguing announcement: On August 21, Twentieth Century Fox willtry to get a hold of as many 3-D and IMAX theatres as they can aroundthe world to show 15 minutes of Avatar—for free. They’re calling it “Avatar Day,” and along with footage from the film they’ll debut video game trailers andother Avatar-centric stuff. It sounds awesome, but you have to wonder: how will the theatersmanage it?

Please Mr. Cameron, some of us have been waiting for this film ever since the beginning. Pleeeeeeeeeease, release some video to the unlucky ones who could not make the two recent public screenings!
Yawn…. Cameron thinks that all his crap is good to eat because he will forever be remembered as the guy that brought us Titanic.
AWESOME! I’ll be first in line for IMAX 3D in Denver!
Bobby…Cameron is good because he brought us Terminator, Aliens AND Titanic. He knows how to direct action like no other director.
I think I saw some sneak peek footage on TV,oh no wait, that was Avatar on Nickelodeon.
You know that is so cool what they are trying to do with the Avatar day thing. I love when you get actors, or even directors that are so happy and willing to give anything they can to their fans. I like that they realize that without the fans their movie is nothing. I just really appriciate that
I bet there were plenty on wet seats!

It asks you to do a little survey but then it takes you right to the show! Enjoy
If they have a free 3-D “Avatar” preview in theaters, I have to wonder how will that work as far as the 3-D glasses are concerned… the current business model for digital 3-D films is to charge customers about $2.00 for a pair. Will we have to pay this for a 15-minute preview, or are we supposed to bring our own 3-D glasses? Just a thought. And when is there going to be an actual trailer for this film available online? Or is Cameron deliberately avoiding 2-D previews on the theory that they would fail to convey the true scope of the movie?
Yeah, Bobby. I totally agree. If only he’d worked on movies like Aliens, Terminator and The Abyss.
Dude… really?
Bobby will eat those words when he sees this film. Just returned from the con and the Avatar footage did not disappoint. My second favorite part of the day, Johnny Depp visiting Tim Burton on stage is number 1, was the crowd reaction when Cameron announced that we would see 25 minutes of film, gave me goosebumps. The colors and scenery were amazing as were the creatures that Cameron introduced. My favorite scene was not that mentioned above but the one shown before it, when Jake is caught between a hammerhead looking dinosaur and another, indescribable creature. This is like no other movie we have ever seen. People will either love it or hate it…that’s my guess.
The Abyss, T2, Aliens, True Lies… Cameron is a fantastic filmaker. The one bad thing is that he doesn’t make nearly enough, so the action void is filled with Transformers, The Fast and the Furious, Wolverine, and whatever else. A great director. Oh, and I agree… the women in his movies are strong and mulitdimensional, something you rarely see in action movies.
like some guy at the panel said
“thank you mr cameron for giving us something original and not a remake or a sequel” amen brother!!!
Just want to say that this movie will be epic. To Bobby James Cameron has not only brought us the biggest box office movie in titanic, but he has also redefined film making with, The Abyss and terminators 1 and 2. Throw in amazing action movies like Aliens and True Lies. This guy knows how to make movies and this one has been his BIG project. 15 years in the making he has been waiting for technology to catch up with this project so he could once again redefine film making. It’s nice to see a movie director and producer that isn’t just out for the money and putting mediocre movies out every summer. He will hold off 10 years to bring us the best possible version of his story that he possibly can. This movie is gonna blow minds unless your mind is already blown and you have no imagination
