'Dating in the Dark': Lights on or lights out?

Tags:

The premise of ABC's upcoming reality show Dating in the Dark (premiering tonight) is an intriguing one: Three single men and three single women move into a house together, and get to know each other and form bonds in total darkness.

Do I smell a fascinating social experiment? These people could really connect without being distracted by the whole physical appearance part of the equation! Oh wait — Earth to me — this is a reality TV dating show we're talking about. The preview did a pretty good job of debunking my high hopes for a deep and thought-provoking program. It looks a lot more like Blind Date and a lot less like a Discovery Channel special. Now I think the synopsis should read more like: Superficial singles get tossed in a pitch black room, "get to know each other" (a.k.a. flirt and make out), and then pray that the person they liked most in the dark is also a babe in the light.

Watch the trailer below, PopWatchers, and tell me if I'm being too harsh. Could something be gained in watching Dating in the Dark aside from an amusement in seeing the disappointed bombshell's jaw drop when her average-looking date is revealed in the light? Or is it destined to be just another guilty-pleasure show?

This looks really bad. I won’t be watching. Why would you make out with someone you’ve never seen? To be on TV. Gross and sad.

I THINK THIS IS AN INTERSTING CONCEPT MOST PEOPLE ONLY WANT TO KNOW SOMEONE BASED ON LOOKS ALONE (NO I AM NOT UGLY) JUST WISH THE POWERS THAT BE WOULD DO A SHOW LIKE THIS FOR OLDER MORE MATURE PEOPLE. LIKE 40′S

this is one dumb show. i give it 2 weeks to go off the air. this belongs on one of the sleezy cable channels. really dumb.111

I wonder how many have actually watched the hour long show. I found it engrossing, especially the choices at the end. It showed women could be just as look-oriented as men. And there were moments of generosity that were surprising. Twists. I did cringe at one point. But overall, I liked it. Will watch again. The previews don’t quite do it justice.

I agree with Dwight, and I actually watched it like he did. It was decent. There were definitely twists but if it’s really unscripted, I guess it will be more or less interesting depending on the people. Still, I was more refreshed and less revolted by it than I usually am by reality tv.

I missed the first 15 minutes of this show, but was intrigued by the concept and watched the remainder. What I initially thought was a cool and interesting twist on dating I later ended up feeling was just plain cruel. That poor gentleman who watched his match walk away; knowing they had a connection only to be rejected once she saw him…my heart just broke. That has to be the worst kind of rejection and his self esteem must have been reduced to nothing. The positive side of the show is that it does shed “light” on the true motives and essence of certain individuals, people not worthy of one’s heart.

I just saw it and I LOVED it!! I may sound like a cheesy idea, but it was really sweet and realistic. The people were normal and fun and it really does make you think about how important looks can be!! I thought it was really fresh and different!! Can’t wait until next week!!!

I just watched, very interesting concept. I felt so bad for the guy who got ditched. He seems like a sweety. This show makes me very grateful that I am happily married! Holy cow I can’t imagine dating like this.

The girl who decided not to meet up with the man is just that, a girl. She will spend many years trying to find happiness as she seems to see the world through visual imagery, only. Very shallow as she will see as her looks change in the years to come.

It was like Blind Date but that’s a good thing. I thought it was snappy and a lot more authentic than schlocky crap like the Bachelorette. At least the guys weren’t standard reality TV meatheads. My wife and I enjoyed it together and got some good laughs out of it.

Funny that the least attractive person on the show is the one that judged the guy on his looks and rejected him. In my opinion, he was way above her leauge!

I was channel surfing & the title of the show caught my interest. I’m a single parent & occasionally date, not enough because it doesn’t seem interesting. This show is interesting. I’m glad the others chose each other & I feel bad that Seth didn’t get picked, but that just leaves him available for those of us non-materialistic women, like myself. I definately would pick him. He looks great inside & out.

I would love to be on this show. It’s a different way to meet people. It’s way more interesting and intriguing than your typical date.

I was really surprised Christina didn’t choose to meet Seth. In my experience, one’s personality can make some more attractive and create attraction even if it’s not immediate there are first sight–which certainly helps if one is looking for a lasting relationship. It seems she talked convinced herself that the connection built in the dark wasn’t strong. Men are such visual beings that I expect such behavior from them (but, of course, Seth found Christina attractive). I guess I’m surprised that Christina didn’t give Seth more of a chance. I would have.

  • Kat

People probably felt bad for Seth, but before any of the big reveals, he said more times than anyone else how he hoped his match was “hot.” He said it like 10 times. If she hadn’t been to his liking, he would have left her in the dust without thinking twice. So he’s a hypocrite and she’s shallow. Good luck to both of you.
