Al Roker's morning Weather Channel show debuts

Wake-up-with-al_l Al Roker's new weekday Weather Channel show, Wake Up with Al, debuted this morning at 6 a.m. EST, I can now confirm. Though I do my best never to wake up before 7 a.m., online video clips would support that Roker and cohost Stephanie Abrams launched their weather-and-headlines program on July 20, with special guest Buzz Aldrin (pictured, with Roker), who celebrated the 40th anniversary of his Apollo 11 lunar landing by correcting Al when he said that Buzz had once described the moon as "magnificent isolation" instead of "magnificent desolation." (In Roker's defense, he admitted at the top of the hour that he'd gotten little sleep last night due to nerves and excitement. Which probably also explains the dazed look on his face after Buzz talked for 76 seconds straight.)

Did anyone catch Wake Up with Al? What did you think? My thoughts on the first four minutes: That touch-screen technology might be fun for Al to play with, but its introduction failed to wow me as a home viewer; they need to steal a bigger screen from the set of the NCIS spinoff. Also, I'm not sure about "WUWA," the nickname Al and Stephanie have decided we'll all call their show because it signifies how offbeat they are. WUWA is surprisingly difficult for me to say, so perhaps I'm biased. I do, however, approve of the Wake Up With Al alarm clark giveaway.

Way too early for me. At least he won’t have to interview reality show losers like Speidi.

Am I the only one who finds Al Roker unbearable? He’s always trying to make a joke, and he’s not funny at all. And he shouts so much. Most irritating, though, on the Today show, when he says, “That’s what’s going on around the country, here’s what’s going on in your neck of the woods,” he never told us what’s going on around the country. He wasted so much time trying to be the cool kid in school that he didn’t give the national weather. He (and Kathy Lee) seem to take the express lane to my last nerve. Sorry, stepping off my soapbox now.

If I want to see comedy,I’ll go to the comedy channel. What has happened to the professional approach to the weather. There are people who depend on accurate and short forecast. Thank goodness I can still go to my computer and look for weather on NOAA and other weather sources.

Al Roker has surpassed the express lane to get on my last nerve with his new show. I don’t know how this lame show with Roker and Abrams can last. Their chemistry is “forced.” After about 30 seconds, I can only think of one thing: MUTE BUTTON! This show will tank…WUWA WUWA

thats a unique way for the Today show to dump Al-give him his own show for a sister network, Paul Goodloe could take over for him tomorrow….

I remember when Al Roker was witty and a nice guy. Now overbloated and grating. Yes, he could be replaced in a minute. Now that you mention it–a good idea!

I like Al. About the time the Today Show made me interview Heidi and Spencer I would be getting done too. Good luck with the new show.

WUWA is fun to say. As much as I like Al, I don’t intend to wake up with him. 8am is early in my books. 6am is crazy.

I’m finding the show very painful to watch. I watch the Weather Channel for weather, not news and useless interviews.

What a disappointment to see Al Roker on The Weather Channel. What happened to The Weather Channel’s standards? Are they all about info-tainment now? Oh yeah, that’s right…they’re network now. Bad call by whoever gave him this slot. Roker is irritating & ingratiating. Any suggestions for an alternative to TWC for people who actually want to hear about weather and not listen to lame jokes? Because we won’t be watching TWC in the AM anymore.

“Wake up with Al”? It was a sad day when NBC took over the Weather channel, and now we are being subjected to a guy who should have been put out to pasture.I can’t bring myself to watch this pseudo-entertainer.

What is NBC thinking of? “Weather News”, don’t the producers have any idea what these two words mean? The original Weather Channel provided an invaluable service to mature, serious users who needed to know the weather as they started their day. Contractors, farmers, sportsmen, police, parents all need concise accurate weater info as they plan their day; not a couple of jokesters.
Put the pros back on and let the new crew go back to their video games and rock shows.

I refuse to watch this mindless blather between Roker & Abrams! I’ll be checking my forecast online as long as this is what I get to wake up to!!

  • Dawn

This show is AWFUL! Why did they think this was a good idea? People who watch The Weather Channel want the weather, period. If I wanted to watch a stupid, blathering (to borrow a word from the first poster), mindless morning show…I’m sure I could find one elsewhere.

I want Jen and Jeff back to enjoy my coffee while watching my weather. If I wanted to watch Al Roker and his lame attempt at jokes, interviews with stars and news I would watch ABC, CBS, or NBC. AND he’s a jerk to his co-host – horrible comment about her desk being messing – sorry not funny. Even my 10yr old was upset by that comment. Please bring back the regular show!!! and leave the circus to the Ringling Bros.

I like Al Roker and have often thought he was quirky and neat. I also have always like Stephanie Abrams for that same reason; she’s different and funny, and always so happy. She works well with Mike Bettes…in prime time, where she belongs. And Al? Send him back to the today show (so sorry Al). It’s not that I mind watching them together (although it’s somewhat grating on my nerves and not something I could take more than 5 minutes at a time), it’s the fact that I’m suddenly watching a news show…on a weather channel. Sadly TWC has been drifting this direction since about the start of the year, becoming much more newsy and much less appealing, and this just cements that distasteful direction. Here’s a hint NBC…there are a ton of morning programs out there doing what you’ve done with this, but there *was* only one channel just doing weather. Does it really make any sense to take away what makes you unique? No, not really. Sorry to Al and Stephanie, you’re both nice people.

Horrible show. So sorry Stephanie has to put up with the fluff that is delivered by Al. And when Al isn’t on we still get 20 minutes an hour of Al with those lame commercials hawking the show.
