Susan Boyle's 'Today' interview preview: What, no tears?

It was revealed Friday that an interview with SuBo — that's Britain's Got Talent phenom Susan Boyle — will air on Wednesday morning's Today show and that evening's episode of America's Got Talent, marking the first time since the end of BGT that the British singer will speak publicly about her meteoric rise to fame and the breakdown she experienced afterward. NBC has released a very short preview of Boyle's sit-down with Meredith Viera that you can watch here:

Honestly, this doesn't entice me that much, and I've been rather intrigued by Boyle's whole story since it began unfolding back in April. For one, as far as I can tell from this rather paltry clip, SuBo seems fine. Not that I was expecting her to be some sort of mess, but shouldn't there be a tear or two after all she's gone through? A wobbly voice? Apprehension? Some admission of the mess of it all maybe? It's hard for me to believe that if Boyle had gotten emotional and broken down a bit in this interview with Viera that NBC wouldn't have teased at least some of that in this video. Maybe they didn't want to exploit her? C'mon, though, that's what Susan Boyle's entire "career" has been about — exploitation. Mostly by the producers of Britain's Got Talent, who used her story to pimp out the show majorly.

As far as Boyle's "slight makeover," it's not that far beyond what she did in the second round of Britain's Got Talent when she sang "Memory" from Cats. A trim, a bottle of hair dye, and some better clothes can do wonders for a person who did nothing before. But she does look nice — and happy. That's good, right? We should be happy that Susan looks good and healthy, yes? I'm evil for suggesting she squeeze out a few tears, right?

What do you think, PopWatchers? What'd you think of the preview? Are you going to watch the Boyle interviews on Wednesday? Do you even care about her anymore?

I saw almost every performance ( 22 of them) of Susan on the BGT tour, which ended July 5th. sometimes she did two shows a day. She was glamourous there also, in great voice, and got standing ovations at all of the venues. It is misleading to say she has “been away”- she did 22 shows!
I have seen all of the shows on either YouTube or her majoe fansite, of which I am a charter member.
And, yes, we are all going to be watching.
Why should Susan shed a tead? Her CD is in the works, and Simon says she is “exraorinary” on record. She has a spread coming up in Harper’s Bazaar. She is doing just FINE, thankyou.

Yes your evil and mean. Yes I do still care and can’t wait for Susan’s album to come out !

  • Leslie Rojohn

First of all her name is Susan Boyle, not SuBo, TanStran. And yes, many, many of us care very deeply about her as she is a true innocent and a true talent. Something we don’t often see in this world anymore. Why should she cry. She is happy (Ihope) and doing what she was born to do and never got a chance till now to do, because the world is full of nasty no-talent people like yourself, doing their best to kick the good people around so they can artificially elevate their own worthless selves. You go Susan, and I hope we will hear in her interview that she is coming to the USA because adoring fans here will welcome her with open arms and open hearts.

  • Lonnirose

Susan does indeed look stunning, does she not? She also looked absolutely gorgeous during all her BGT tour performances, and so captivated every audience that standing ovations were a given. She held every crowd mesmerized with her golden voice and charismatic stage presence. Watching Susan perform is magical!
She is now recording her debut CD, due out in the fall, and her millions of global fans are eagerly awaiting it.
Susan Boyle is destined to be the biggest Superstar we have seen in decades – wait for it!

  • Amanda

Susan Boyle is happy to be finally realizing her lifelong dream of being a singer. She is doing very well, thank you very much. It’s more than time for all of the skeptics, from the villagers who stoned her front door to the tabloid press, to wish her well and move on. Hopefully to more productive activities.

  • Bernice Rice

That’s Lady Susan Boyle to you. There are plenty of Susan fans that will be watching and anxiously awaiting her CD and anything else Susan chooses to share with us. A tear, a wobbly voice? If that where the case, you in the media would make a mountain out of a mole hill and all we would hear is how “delicate” Susan is. She is a wonderful, charming, talented lady with a great sense of humor. I love her. Her fans, of which I am one, wish her only the best life has to offer. May God Bless Susan Boyle (The People’s Singer)

  • Nornie

You bet I’ll bet watching! I love Susan Boyle! Why should she shed a tear? As poster teri above said, she’s done 22 shows on the BGT Tour, performed stunningly to standing ovations in each show, looked absolutely gorgeous, she is working on at least one album. She is living her dream and all her fans are supporting her and will be lining up to buy her CD!

  • lmacrjac

Sure we’re still interested! Much to the chagrin of the mass media, we don’t all suffer from ADD – Susan burst onro the scene a mere 3 months ago, has finished up BGT, a 22-day tour, is recording a CD due to be released in mid-October, is to be on the cover of Harper’s (possibly the October edition, to coincide with the release of the CD?), has given at least one interview since the end of the tour – AND is not falling apart and /or in mental/emotional collapse! What is not to like about all of the above?

  • Fran M.

Yes, Susan looks lovely, healthy and happy and yes, I do care about her very much, and yes, you are evil for suggesting she squeeze out a few tears. Susan deserves all the happiness and success in the world and she will have it.

For sure I will be watching! Our precious Lady Susan has emerged victorious and proven what most of us already knew… that the vast majority of the “garbage” that was put out by the trashoid press was made up lies just trying to get a story. You may not have been impressed with this inteview but her thousands of fans ARE and are thrilled to see her looking refreshed, happy and excited… not to mention stunningly beautiful! Not that we cared what she looked like… remember, we made her a superstar BEFORE she had her makeover. But I am happy for her that she turned out to be so pretty and confident. AND she is VERY witty and well spoken… learning disability NO WAY! More manufactured tripe. :) Susan still has FAR to go and we are going to make it happen!!

  • Misti in Seattle

And yes… it is “Lady Susan Boyle” to you. :)

  • Kate Hopkins

No chance in the world that this fan will ever stop caring about this remarkable singer. Yes, she looks and sounds great…hardly fits all the negative adjectives other media insist on pinning to her name. Thanks for caring to remind the world that She is just getting started and has her act very nicely together.

  • Nanikens

Wonderful clip…looking forward to the full interview. Ms Boyle is looking great, sounds relaxed and happy and looking forward to her CD’s…What an amazing achievement, what an amazing lady, Susan Boyle!

  • Trennie

Why you snarky little twirp. Did you think that headline was clever? And your little soul is bored by good news? In that case, I hope none comes to you in your own life. Crawl back where you came from.

  • harpycourts

Dear Tanner: If Subo just sits and farts her interview will be more interesting than your boring article. If you have no enthusiasm for your work and apparent negligible writing skills, then what is the point of even putting your byline out? Millions more of us will be watching Boyle’s interview then will ever be reading your boring tripe again. Are you and Perez Hilton related?

  • jks

Good grief! Why is it so hard for some of you ‘journalists’ to give Lady Susan some credit? And why on earth would you be so calloused that an interview would only be interesting if someone cried? So, she had a bit of a rough time when the tabloids were jumping on her. Who wouldn’t? She is a beautiful, witty, charming, woman whose voice touches me like no other on this planet. She did those 22 BGT tour dates and only missed four! And, by the way, did anyone notice that the other acts had days off, too?? Never heard a word about that in the press. I have pre-ordered her CD, can’t wait to get it and will buy anything she records. God bless her and her career!

Susan has fans all over the world: in Europe (outside UK and Ireland), South Africa, Australia, Japan… I found them on one of her many fansites and I am in mail contact with some of them.
We have watched all her early intervierws performances during BGT Tour, missed her news last weeks and we certainly will watch and register her interview Wednesday, I will do it via Satelite.
Now we are so happy to see her looking so stunning and talking about recording a CD that we are waiting for.
About exploitaiton, is not rather you who is exploiting her story to make people read you?
Her dream is coming true. Sorry, tell me why should she cry?
Maybe tears of joy… Personnaly I had one or two when I first saw this preview.

  • Susahelen

Tanner Stransky….you are the lowest form of human creation! If I knew as little about Susan Boyle as you appear to know, which is obviously zilch, I’d need to own the rag! If your editor puts up with this type of drivel from his staff, you’re very lucky to be earning a living! Before you atttempt to report on a subject, you’re supposed to do some research – idiot!

  • Jessie

Susan is a strong gutsy proud woman. Why should she cry for your benefit? Like many others i watched her progress on the BGT tour, which was phenomenal. She was the stand out act at every venue garnering standing ovations. At Wembley the crowd were so loud she could not hear her music and missed her cue. She calmly signaled the tech guy to rewind, signaled the crowd to hush and engaged in an impromptu chat with the crowd, much to the delight of a little girl near the front who called out to her.The audience were charmed. Susan has grown so much as a performer. She did 17 shows back to back for the last leg of the tour, during which time all the other acts took days off. The UK tabloids keep printing their bile, but they will change their tune.Susan is hugely popular and is fantastic live.My 18 year old heavy metal loving cousin thinks she is awesome, he was blown away by her when he saw her live.Susan looks happy and beautiful, and her album is going to break records. She rocks!

  • Adam

It’s great that we will finally hear from her. We’ve been hearing reports after reports, but who knows what’s true. Now we hear from her.

Oh and you might want to think twice about printing this kind of negative stuff. A lot of “journalists” in the British trashoid press ended up looking like complete fools. Wouldn’t want that to happen to YOU now, would we? :)

  • Allikat

Why on earth should there be any ‘tears’? Are you trying to be funny, in your sad little (non)’article’ there? All you are doing with such drivel is ticking off those of us who are great fans of Lady Susan. (Could you please stop referring to her as ‘SuBo’?) Of course I enjoyed seeing the little interview preview; I will watch the entire interview on the 22nd, and I will purchase any and all CDs, DVDs, magazine spreads, or whatever else that Susan comes out with. Also I plan to get myself to at least one live concert once she comes to the US. Because, not only do I ‘care’ about Susan, but I sincerely love her voice! The fact that she happens to be a delightful woman with a charming, humorous personality just adds to her ‘package’ and makes those of us who do adore her voice love her even that much more!

  • Maria

I think the problem is that the tabloids have attempted to make Susan Boyle out to be some sort of crazy woman, so that’s what many people are expecting to see.
Her friends (and even Simon and Piers) said earlier that the Susan they read about isn’t in any way related to the one they know. So, now, we’re seeing the real Susan.
I’m looking forward to this interview. Coming from Irish stock myself :0), I can’t imagine Susan crying. The Irish and the Scots (her ancestry) aren’t exactly known for their weeping and whining! She’ll keep her chin up (typical Irish phrase) and “give it a go.”
And really, why should she be weepy? She’s doing what she’s always wanted to do and looks thrilled.
And no, you’re not evil – you just have a sick sense of humor. ;)

  • Lene

Must you be so American? Always with the tears, requiring emotional incontinence for something to catch your interest. The woman’s got dignity and she’s from the UK. They don’t cry in public there (or in many other place in Europe, actually).

  • firststate

I care about Susan! Shade a tear for the tabloid media – yea – right. Here’s a woman with genuine talent, a singer with great versatility as evidenced by “Cry Me A River”, and you’re hoping she’ll be a “one CD wonder.” Dream on. Her many fans aren’t gonna let that happen.

  • SueJohnson

Whar is your problem? why can’t a middle aged, slightly overweight woman be loved, have millions of fans, and sing beautifully? Just because she does not look like Brittany or Madonna, some of you in the media think she should not have fans. It is jerks like you who should not have readers. I would not have even heard of you or your idiotic article if it were not about Susan Boyle. You comments are not worth the paper they are printed on. A previous poster had the right idea: crael back under your rock.

  • teri johnson

A word of advice to EW- You will be on your hands and knees BEGGING to have Miss Boyle on your show or for an interview- I would say by October, when her CD goes platinum….I strongly suggest you get off the “i don’t care about Susan anymore” slant because MILLIONS do care- and that is on the whole planet, in case you were wondering ;)

  • Babs

Susans been singing if you even care to notice –appearing 22 times in recent venues. She received many standing ovations on the BGT toour. I watched most on the internet and was impressed with her professionalism and the reception she received. Tears???Too bad you didn’t even bother to read about her tour. Do you torment small animals for fun???

  • Pamela Wollenberg

I love her and I have never felt she was the “crazy” some tried to make her out to be. Stress that she was under would be a challenge to anyone and, she should be given credit for her handling of it. Her life drastically changed overnight. I wish her nothing but the best, she is a talented and, gracious lady whose journey I hope never ends.
