2009 Emmy Nominations: Which is your favorite, and why?

Vanessa-Williams_l I've had 48 hours to recover from the pain of the Umpteenth Annual Emmy Nomination Snubs — no room at the table for Lost's Elizabeth Mitchell? Seriously? — and now I'm attempting to do the glass-half-full dance. (Sounds like something Mia Michaels might cook up for a future episode of So You Think You Can Dance, no?) In that spirit, today, let's talk about the 2009 Emmy nomination that made you happiest, and more importantly, why. (We'll collect the best answers for an EW.com gallery later this week.) For me, predictably, it's Vanessa L. Williams' nod for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her portrayal of Wilhelmina Slater in Ugly Betty. I'm not sure if there's an actress on TV today (or in the history of ever) who can so consistently (and effortlessly) escalate her punch lines to legendary territory. (After the jump, check out last season's "Put on your game face! Not your gay face, your game face.") Oh, and Williams' patented delighted/bitchy eyebrow raise is as vital a part of the current TV landscape as the Lost flashback, Ina Garten's use of butter, and the DVR.

Your turn. Which 2009 Emmy nomination made you happiest? Give us your pick and explain yourself in the comments section below!

Jim Parsons! It was such a pleasant surprise.

  • T.T

how i met your mother and jim parsons!

  • annie

Elisabeth Moss! So happy she was nominated for best actress. Also happy about Dexter and Michael C Hall, he deserves that Emmy. Happy for Lost as well. That’s about it though. The Emmy’s this year were a huge dissapointment. It makes me wonder if the academy was even watching tv this year.

I thought the Jim Parsons could not get any better than he was in the first season of BBT. He did. The episode where Sheldon learns to smile had me dying! He deserved this Emmy nom and deserves the win even more. There was no other male comedic actor on TV that had such a consistent season.

  • Theresa

    Sheldon!

  • Dimi

It has to be Aaron Paul for his Supporting Actor nomination for Breaking Bad. His Jesse Pinkman transformed from a lowlife stoner to a genuinely heart wrenching character that you want to root for. And going toe to toe with Bryan Cranston is no walk in the park.

i’m thrilled for kristen wiig. i mean, c’mon. don’t we all just fast forward through SNL just to get to her scenes?

  • mari

I’m so happy for Jim Parson and “Sheldon”! He makes the show worth watching and the episode where Sheldon tries to learn to drive is second only to “Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock”. BBT has become my favorite show on CBS…sorry Survivor.

Definently happy for the showtime comedies. Mary Lousie Parker gave the performance of her career on season 4 of weeds, even if it wasnt very comedic. I was rooting for Toni Collette after seeing the first episode of United States of Tara, and its good to see her recognized, I love Fey on 30 Rock, but I’m rooting for one of them for the emmy.

  • JKS

I love that Sarah Silverman was recognized for her show, and that so many cable shows were recognized as well. I actually didn’t have a problem with most of the nominations, although Jeanne Tripplehorn’s work on “Big Love” was excellent and I would to have liked to seen her nominated for that. But she did get a nomination for “Grey Gardens,” so it isn’t all bad! Bonus points for no Jeremy Piven this year, as well!

  • theo

jim parsons, how i met your mother, and jane/jack/tracy from 30 rock. (also, piven didn’t get nominated)

  • Christopher

Kristin Chenoweth scoring the nom for supporting actress in a comedy. She probably won’t win, but she should!

  • Evan Kirby

Michael J. Fox for Rescue Me! Michael shows he has truly not lost form in his hilarious take on a alcoholic, prescription pill, paralyzed ex-extreme sports athlete. Now only Michael J. can pull that off!

  • bob

drew barrymore! i was so excited that she got nominated for “grey gardens” because her performance was simply a revelation.

  • DF

    Jim Parsons, for sure!

  • DF

    Jim Parsons!

  • Eve

Kristen Chenoweth gave me the biggest happy feeling. She was so great on Pushing Daisies, she made me laugh out loud again and again, not to mention her character’s infatuation with Ned that was so beyond adorable as well pull-your-heartstrings sad.
Sarah Silverman and Jermaine Clement’s nominations also made me very happy.

  • Nick

I know it wasn’t a surprise, but I’m still thrilled for Tina Fey and the whole cast of 30 Rock, by far the funniest show on tv!

  • Ronn

My favorite actress Jessica Lange & one of my favorite ‘this generation’ actresses, Drew Barrymore- nominated together! WOW!!!!! :-)
    Jim Parsons MUST WIN…
and nobody will get hurt, lol!!!!

  • Chaddogg

Gotta go with Tina Fey’s nomination as guest star for comedy/variety/musical program for her multiple turns as Sarah Palin on SNL. I mean, when you almost single-handedly turn an election (or at least the entire population’s perception of a VP candidate), you deserve an Emmy.
Justin Timberlake also is very deserving as a guest star nominee on SNL — he’s by far one of the show’s best hosts.

  • Josh

Michael Emerson as Ben on Lost. He is easily one of the best actors on the show for playing such a manipulative character with so much heart.

  • Rebecca Parker

My favorite would be “How I Met Your Mother” FINALLY being nominated for Best Comedy.

  • Hillary

Best nomination is definitely Jim Parsons! I also love that Neil Patrick Harris was recognized again and that Tina Fey was nominated for the guest stint as Sarah Palin on SNL.
The worst snub was no reality show nomination for So You Think You Can Dance and no reality show host nomination for Cat Deeley!

  • Jeb

Christina Applegate made Samantha Who? a must watch for me. It’s a bittersweet nomination that hopefully garners a well-deserved win!

  • Hillary

Oh and also Elizabeth Moss for Mad Men was wonderful!

  • Blue Silver

I would love to finally see Charlie Sheen get his due for “Two and a Half Men”. That is by far the best and funniest show on TV!

  • mick

Tina Fey and Justin Timberlake getting guest nods. Well deserving to both. Also Justin for Motherlover and I love Sports although I’m torn since I love both songs. Hugh Laurie and House is always a reason for me to watch.

  • Ceballos

I’m sorry to break the rules, but I have two:
    1. Jemaine Clement for “Flight of the Conchords” He and Bret McKenzie rightfully get credit for their great and hilarious songwriting, but Jemaine is also absolutely hilarious in that show (LOVE his deadpan, sad sack delivery) so to see the show and one of the guys up for more than just a songwriting award was great.
    2. Tracy Morgan for his work as Tracy Jordan. Some people slam the guy because they claim that he’s just playing himself or not acting very much at all. All I know is that pretty much everything he says makes me laugh out loud at a higher rate then pretty much any other actor on TV. I know the show’s writing is a big part of that, but Morgan definitely deserves his due for his part in that.

  • Mark

The best nomination was Jim Parsons on “The Big Bang Theory” because it captured a star-is-born moment at it’s most deserving. There’s a precedent here: people forget that when “Family Ties” came out in 1982, it was a vehicle for Meredith Baxter. Twenty-five years later, it’s remembered as the show that made Michael J. Fox a star. I predict this same fate for Parsons and “BBT”.

  • tiki

Justin Timberlake for Guest Actor on SNL! He steals it every time he’s on the show!
Also, Jim Parsons’ nomination was well-deserved, as was the HIMYM nom for Best Comedy. My other favorite was the fact that Piven didn’t get nominated! YEAH!
