TV on DVD is our Must this week, what's yours?

It's a good thing I don't actually have anything to do this weekend, because the sheer volume of amazing television released on DVD yesterday will be taking up all of my free time — and my Must List — for the foreseeable future. As Ken Tucker noted yesterday, beloved '90s comedy series The State finally got its long-awaited release (just in time for the premiere of Michael and Michael Have Issues on Comedy Central tonight), and the second season of AMC's '60s-set drama Mad Men hit shelves in preparation for the show's third season premiere later this summer. But wait! There's more. The HBO movie Grey Gardens, starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange, made its DVD debut, so all HBO-less citizens can watch the movie about Jackie O.'s eccentric cousins in the comfort of their own homes, as opposed to commandeering the couches of their premium cable-having friends. It's the best thing to watch for the day, you understand.

Get psyched by watching the full-length trailer for Grey Gardens below, then tell us what's on your Must List this week. List up to three items from current TV/movies/music/books/games/online. Don't forget your e-mail address, in case we decide to use your submission in the magazine. Deadline is Thursday, July 16 at noon ET.

How about the Sotomayor confirmation hearings on PBS? Heck, it’s smarter than most of the usual ilk known as daytime programming — and how many other shows currently on TV star a middle-aged Latina?

  • Shorty

Poison, Def Leppard, and Cheap Trick in concert, tonight! And I got an aisle seat!

ABCfamilys “make it or Break it”. I find myself looking forward to watching every week. It is a great summer TV guilty pleasure.

Speaking of TV on DVD, don’t forget about Joe Schmo Season 2 finally being released on DVD after five years! This is a great week for fans of this underappreciated innovative reality show, and right now it’s only $10.99 for all 12 episodes on Amazon!

Yo, ditto on “Make it or Break it”! I found myself hopelessly drawn to it after flipping through the channels a couple of weeks ago, and now I’m hooked. It’s so awesomely cheesy! It defnitely joins Gossip Girl as a show that, as an adult, I should be mortified to admit I watch, but I just don’t care!

Harry Potter, Maxwell’s new CD, Sookie Stackhouse novels

The Geoff Johns-helmed “Blackest Night” event begins this week from DC Comics.
    And of course… Harry Potter.

Absolutely giddy about the possible new series Slingers. Not only does it come from the slightly warped but entirely creative minds of Sizemore (aka Mike Atherton) and the Brownlee Bros, but Sizemore is also blogging about the whole process, very much like John Rogers has done for Leverage. Mad Men Season 2 this week.
But I can’t wait for Dexter and House, which comes in August and September

    Blackest Night! Geoff Johns!

So You Think You Can Dance. The quality of talent on this show puts American Idol to shame. Plus, this year the show has its strongest Top 10 dancers ever. And who doesn’t love hostess Cat Deeley?
Also…. The State on DVD, of course!

  • Yvonne

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, of course! Plus the brilliant (500) Days of Summer release on Friday

    1. 10 Things I Hate About You (ABC Family) – loved the movie and I’m loving the new series. Ethan Peck (Gregory Peck’s grandson?) is the one to watch!
    2. BURN NOTICE – Jeffrey Donovan & Bruce Campbell – ’nuff said
    3. LEVERAGE – best new show on TNT in my opinion. Hey, my Dad likes it and he basically dislikes everything on TV!
    4. Drop Dead Diva (Lifetime) – Brooke Elliot is wonderful in this new series. She’s another one to keep a close eye on.

  • Sue

Music! Been anxiously awaiting these 2 new releases!!
    1. Rob Thomas – Cradlesong
    2. Daughtry – Leave This Town

  • Daniel Fidler

    – The music video for ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic’s “Skipper Dan” – In his latest video, featuring animation from frequent They Might Be Giants collaborator Divya Srinivasan, Al tells the sad story of a wannabe actor forced to take up work as a jungle cruise guide at Disney World’s Adventureland when the job offers don’t start pouring in. The lyrics manage to alternately tickle the funny bone and tug at the heartstrings, a rare feat for Yankovic.
    – Trailer for ‘Despicable Me’ – It’s hard to tell just what the premise of this animated feature is from the preview, but with an enormous all-star cast of comedians including Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Kristen Wiig, Danny McBride, Russell Brand and Jack McBrayer (just to name a few!), and some very funny gags in the two and a half minute spot, is there any reason not to be excited?
    – Comic-Con 2009 – Tickets are sold out, but there’s still much fun to be had next weekend keeping up with all the news coming out of San Diego.

    3-The Sookie Stackhouse Novels

Alan Ball, his “Towelhead” now out on DVD = amazing / “True Blood” = cult status. Miss “Six Feet Under,” the man has a knack for such wrought drama.

  • Raven_Moon

    1) “Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince” (film): Finally!!!
    2) “True Blood” (TV): I ‘m completely hooked on this show.
    3) The new “House M.D.” promo: I’m so freaking excited for the new season! House in the asylum. It’s going to be awesome.

  • J

    1. Nurse Jackie
    2. Big Brother
    3. NYC Prep

  • Sarah

    1. Grey Gardens on DVD – The tale of 2 disturbed, eccentric woman is captured beautifully in this HBO original movie. Look for Emmy nods for the two female leads.
    2. Royal Pains – The series grew on me, thanks to its adorable star. What started out as a time slot filler has now earned a permanent slot on my DVR schedule.
3.500 Days of Summer – I hate using this phrase, but…Dear America, can we please make this cutesy, folksy, overall charming film this year’s Juno? Love, Film Obsessed Teenager

  • Lola Lopez

-Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince!
    -Dr. Cooper on Nurse Jackie
    -The State on DVD!!!

  • kim in kentucky

the beginning of the end for Dirty Sexy Money – an absolutely devilish guilty pleasure!

  • fernie

Torchwood: Children of Earth. Gripping, terrifying, emotional & thought-provoking, the British sci-fi series turns political thriller with stunning results.

  • Tom

On my Must List is new episodes of “I Survived…” on the Bio Channel. These are inspiring true-life stories of survival from the people who lived them.

  • victoria

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. It’s the best romantic comedy I’ve seen in years.
10 Things I Hate About You. I didn’t expect it be be this funny.

  • Joslyn

    1. Rhett Miller’s new self-titled solo album. Can’t stop listening to “I Need to Know Where I Stand”
    2. http://mymilktoof.blogspot.com/ Totally the cutest thing on the interwebs right now.
    3. SYTYCD. Best summer show ever.

  • Kathleen

I am so looking forward to the documentary Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg. It’s about the woman who created and starred in the radio comedy show “The Goldbergs” which then became the first TV sitcom. She then won the very first Emmy for Best Actress! I love show business history, and this is so right up my alley.
