Auditions for American Idol's ninth season ended Tuesday, and, according to a Ryan Seacrest tweet, Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" was the most popular song on the road — "for real." What do we think this means for next season? As someone who's (privately) fallen prey to that song's driving chorus, I cannot judge. So I'll leave that to you. On the upside, it sounds like we could get an Idol whose voice actually suits the inspirational tune that he or she will be forced to record as a first single. (Though the odds of that song being anywhere as good as "The Climb"…)

The question is do we WANT an Idol whose voice suits the inspirational crapola they’ll be forced to record as their first single? Doesn’t the winner usually try to beat that song away with a 39 1/2 foot pole as soon as humanly (and contractually) possible?
PS I also not-so-secretly enjoy “The Climb” and I think the day when Oscar nominations are announced and people’s heads explode after it gets a Best Original Song nom will be thoroughly delightful.
I just wish Miley Cyrus would go away. Along with Speidi, the entire cast of High School Musical and anything and everybody that has anything to do with Twilight.
I bet that would bring world peace. No wars, no recession.

I dunno how significant the most popular song is – the reason it’s popular in auditions is no matter who sings it, it’s usually likely they’ll sing it better than Miley (remember her painful live Idol performance?), and it’s a good song. I guess we’ll see in January.
I can’t stand that song. If this is the kind of music I can expect to hear from AI’s new season maybe I don’t want to watch after all. I’ll take David Cook & Adam Lambert over a Miley Cyrus wannabe any day.
i think the song is so popular b/c it’s very easy to sing and would make any contestant sound better, singing it, than miley does.
this is the best song i have EVER heard and miley cyrus is my iddol so every one who don’t like her you are just jealous cause you don’t heve her talent,looks or money and when you hate someone it’s mostly because you’re jealous so leave her alone she did nothing to any of you..and you don’t have the right to hate on someone you never met so BACKOFF!!!

This statistic has nothing to do with the direction of the show. You can attribute it to the following facts:
(1) Miley and AI target a similar demographic. (2) “The Climb” is a crossover song, played on pop, lite rock, country, AND Christian radio stations. (3) It’s really, really easy to sing, so just about anyone (i.e. Miley) can make it sound decent, even if they have an only-okay voice.
alas, despite my better judgement I do like this song.
Miley is a great singer…that’s why she’s sold millions of CDs already, stupid. The song is good and Miley actually sings it (no rap, no yelling, no vocal acrobatics that are annoying) and Miley has a unique, hot voice.

I like the song. I’m not crazy about Miley. I do believe a stronger singer can take that song and blow it apart. Like Allison. Nice video.

Look, I don’t even mind this song (in fact, its somewhat uplifting) but I’m sure that the reason this song was so popular is because Miley ain’t the most vocally inclined singer so this song has about 1.5 octave ranges. As such, a merely decent singer can hide behind the tracks rather straight forward arrangement. Hell, I can sing this song and make it sound decent.
I’m thinking anyone who auditions with a Miley Cyrus song isn’t cut out to be the next American Idol… and “A Moment Like This” trumps “The Climb” any day of the week.

What this means for next season? Nothing good. A bunch of flat-voiced, giddy shallow teengage girls (who can’t sing half as well as Allison did) singing bland pop anthems with no originality added to the arrangement and performance whatsoever. It’s AI: Disney Teenybopper Version! (And if the coronation song isn’t half as good as ‘The Climb’ it will be dismal indeed, seeing as The Climb reads like flat inspirational poetry written by a twelve year old. “It’s the climb! Friendship! Be yourself! Never give up! Shallow platitude!”)

Miley sounds terrible on that track, so perhaps the contestants are thinking that no matter how badly they sing it, they’ll come out sounding better by comparison….
