Joan Rivers roast sets lineup: This is gonna get ugly

Joan-Rivers_lGet ready for some Nip/Tuck punchlines, folks. The line-up of tormentors has just been announced for Comedy Central's Roast of Joan Rivers. The legendary comedienne/Apprentice champ/plastic surgery cautionary tale will take her turn on the dais when the show airs on Aug. 9 at 10 p.m. ET., and we have a feeling that the prick of a Botox needle will probably seem painless compared to the delightfully filthy barbs administered by Roast Master (Roast Mistress?) Kathy Griffin.

Joining Griffin in the dirty-joke dogpile are: Everybody Loves Raymond/'Til Death's Brad Garrett, old-school icon Carl Reiner, and nervous nebbish Gilbert Gottfried, as well as Jeffrey Ross, Lily Tomlin, Mario Cantone, and Richard Belzer. In other words, it's gonna get messy. Judging from the networks' past roasts, the evening should be heavy on extended, multi-second bleeps. These folks like to work blue. And they'll no doubt be at their bluest teeing off on Rivers — a dame who's always been a master (mistress) of the ruthless put-down.

So which one of these roasters will land the best — by which we meanest — plastic surgery joke? And where the heck is Lisa Lampanelli?

    Roasts make me nervous.

The roast of Pam Anderson was the best! Bea Arthur and a drunk Courtney Love!

Was there no way for anyone to ghostwrite material for Annie Duke to deliver?
I mean has there been a more intense(ly contrived) rivalry on TV in the past year than the great Duke/Rivers feud of ‘09. It was so intense that it divided my household. (I was on Team Duke, my gf was wrong…I mean, on Team Rivers.)

I would be curious to hear how Kathy Griffin is able to roast/mock Joan Rivers, considering Kathy Griffin pretty much stole her whole schtick from Joan.

  • James

Interesting. No Lisa Lampanelli? I hope it’s not going to be 7 comedians doing the same bit about her “work” over and over. Too obvious. Perhaps Rivers didn’t want Lampanelli or Lampanelli didn’t see much of a challenge in roasting Rivers.

Check out the molestation joke that Joan made about Michael Jackson on TMZ.com a couple days ago. Too soon?? Nah.

  • David

I REALLY wish this show was aired on HBO, so we could hear all the jokes. Bleep after bleep gets old after 10 minutes.

  • mark

where is ANNIE DUKE? Is ther anyone who hates her more?

  • josh

    To David,
Comedy Central will show the roast unedited in their late night weekend “stash”. It will probably air a few weeks after the initial airing

  • Chris

Where is Annie Duke? Do you not know what a roast is? You don’t roast people you hate.

  • Emoney

The roast of Bob Saget made me cry — hilarious. This will be funny.

  • Snarf

    No Lisa Lampenelli? Sadness.

  • FG

Agree… the people who are asking “Where’s Annie Duke?” have No Clue what a Roast is about.

  • Michael

I think Lisa wasnt hired because usually the roastee chooses who roasts them. Lampenelli and River have had little interaction.

  • Ceballos

    Chris and FG-
I know how a roast works. I hinted at this in my original comment about bringing Annie Duke in, but I believe the feud between her and Joan in Celeb. Apprentice was, to use the technical term, hella played up. They basically provided THE main storyline for the season. I don’t think they actually hated each other any more than a couple of feuding WWE wrestlers do.
Since I don’t believe they really hate each other, I thought it’d be fun to bring Annie (her “nemesis”) in and crack a couple of jokes (that were scripted for her).

  • jim

    comedy = pain + time.

  • Kathleen

This is almost enough to make me get cable. This will be stellar. And don’t they usually re-air them at two am on a Saturday sans bleeps? Bleep free is the only way to go on a roast.

  • Sean

No Greg Giraldo and Lisa, bummer!!!

  • Tyler

Does anyone know the song and artist of the song when Kathy Griffin First came out??

  • Bill

Lisa I’m gonna miss hearing not as much as Sarah Silverman–she cracks me up with her confused, little girl delivery on these roasts.

  • S.McNulty

This was the WORST insult from a bunch of NO NAME comics I have EVER seen!!! The language was beyond discusting, but this was so degrading to a woman who should have had the most famous people in the comedic world roasting her…..not a bunch of young comics who appear on late night TV that no one knows, and totally degraded to a VERY classy woman, who has been voted Best Dressed woman in America multiple times, and ownes one of the largest and most successful jewelry companies in the world that she built fom the bottom up. She didn’t win the Appentice because she is stupid….she is an AMAZING business woman! This was a very sad so called tibute to a classy woman and we could see the hurt and discust in her eyes. I believe Cathy Giffen is only funny to a VERY small group of people that she isone of, and should NEVER have been put in that position. I understand these roasts are low down and nasty, but low down and classless made me and eveyone I know turn it off.
She certainly deserved much better than sho got!!! I’m sure she and Melissa wish they would have passed on this BOMB!

  • Clint

McNulty, it’s a ROAST. The whole idea is to degrade and ridicule. The more moans from the crowd the better. She knew what she was getting herself into. Calm down.
