Emmy nominations come out in less than 48 hours, but before I begin an afternoon-long chanting session on behalf of Vanessa (L. Yeah!) Williams in the Supporting Actress division, I thought it was high time to dish the Best Comedy Series category.Yeah, I know, we should probably prepare ourselves for the standard operating lineup of Entourage and Two and a Half Men, as well as (deservedly) 30 Rock and The Office. But I've also got to believe that with the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences expanding its nominations lists from five to six contenders this year, there has to be room for at least one fresh program. With that in mind, here are my longshot candidates:
Better Off Ted:Try as I might, I can't convince any of my friends or family members to tune into ABC's delightfully warped workplace comedy. Is it the title? Is the fact that ABC's decision to run fresh summer episodes feels more like burn-off than hot stuff? All I can say is that an Emmy nod might help folks get hip to a crisply written show featuring creepy corporate-advertising parodies, guffaw-worthy science-based punch-lines, and hilarious turns by Portia de Rossi as an icy boss-lady and Jay Harrington as a genial middle manager.
Ugly Betty:The candy-colored fashionista fantasy may have slipped in the ratings this year, but not in terms of artistic merit. Betty's got the best ensemble cast in prime-time, dressed in the best costumes on television, delivering the kinds of bitchy one-liners that translate beautifully into everyday conversation. "What is with white people and Taye Diggs?" Holla!
Okay, those are my picks. Which series are you hoping will score some love from Emmy come Thursday morning? List your faves (and your reasons why) below. And remember: Thursday's Emmy snubs could turn out to be next month's EWwy nominees! (Oh, and hey, follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak! Fun!)

Who deserves an Emmy nod for Supporting Actor/Actress in a Drama? (Fresh faces encouraged!)
Who deserves an Emmy nod for Lead Actor/Actress in a Drama? (Not just the usual suspects!)

Who deserves an Emmy nod for Supporting Actor/Actress in a Comedy? (Other than Vanessa L. Williams, naturally)

Better off Ted, absolutely.
How I Met Your Mother, inexplicably nomination-free (in the Comedy category) for the past three years.
HIMYM
No Contest.
Although i caught up on Better off Ted on Hulu, and i must say its awesome. Thats not good enough to beat out the legendary HIMYM!

The Big Bang Theory
That is all.
I think The Big Bang Theory should be nominated for best comedy – I laugh so hard every time I watch it!!
Chuck! C’mon, watch the last arc of the season (introducing Chuck’s dad, Chevy Chase’s Steve Jobs inspired computer mogul bad guy, and Chuck’s evolution from nerd to spy, making the choice himself to step up and be the hero, not to mention the ever sizzling chemistry between Chuck and Sarah) and tell me that this show hasn’t done extremely well in its sophomore season.
DL i ALMOST agree with you, and BBT got me on HIMYM, but the writing in HIMYM is so in depth that it along with its performances should not be ignored. True, BBT has some great jokes and acting, but its the writing that connects episodes in HIMYM that makes it stand out.
The Big Bang Theory. I don’t know if Rescue Me is entered in the comedy or drama fields this year, but they would be another “new” pick of mine if they’re in comedy. I think it’s the funniest show on television. Oh, and Ugly Betty is a personal favorite, too, so good job, EW.
Oops, almost forgot, not to mention the hilarious Godfather-inspired Buy More subplot at the end of the season. I had to watch Big Mike kiss Morgan a la Michael and Fredo in Godfather, Part II multiple times it was so stunningly hilarious.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, HIMYM
How I Met Your Mother is the best-written, funniest show on TV. NPH needs a nomination, especially after Barney’s romantic arc last season
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, HIMYM, Worst Week (though I know that one won’t ever happen)
I love Better Off Ted, and Big Bang Theory. Both are hilarious and under appreciated.
Heroes
(The only way to honestly enjoy that show these days is to watch it as a comedy, no?)
Ok, my serious longhot nominees are “Party Down”, “Secret Diary of a Call Girl” and “Chuck.”
If “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” gets a nomination, I’ll celebrate by huffing some glue and becoming illiterate.
I’m with Slezak all the way on this one.
Big Bang Theory, Big Bang Theory, Big Bang Theory! Witty writing, great comic timing, and wonderful cast chemistry, plus SHELDON!!! Jim Parsons can make me laugh with a turn of his head.
BTW, Two and a Half Men (IMO) is one of the dumbest, most offensively stupid shows on TV. Why that is still on the air, let alone consistently nominated for an Emmy, is beyond me.
The Big Bang Theory is the funniest show on TV. Two and a Half Men sucks.
Also, HIMYM should be nominated.
Calm down Red, there are obviously people that enjoy it. Chuck gets my vote all the way!!!!
Psych for Best Comedy Series!!
Oh please! How I met Your Mother FTW!!!
The Big Bang Theory
The Big Bang Theory
The Big Bang Theory
I don’t like the comedy EMMY anymore… it’s a joke. The horribly grating and wayyyy heavy on guest stars “Will & Grace” got several nominations, while the awesome and underated “Newsradio” was not once ever nominated for Best Comedy.
My Nominees are:
Weeds
Californication
Ugly Betty
The Office
Curb your Enthusiasm
Kind of sick of Entourage
30 Rock
Better off Ted!
Agree with BOT, but UB ain’t what it used to be. Big Bang, Chuck and HIMYM definitely. Please no more 2 1/2 Men.
“Better Off Ted” is very smart and clever. The comedy on the CBS shows is clumbsy and obvious by comparison. Emmy love for Ted!
“United States of Tara” hasn’t been mentioned nearly enough in any of these columns. It deserves Emmy love… Aside from that, Weeds is the most adventurous, most comedies today, though, well, it’s not a real full field. One category that could be interesting: If NPH gets nominated for hosting the Tonys against Hugh Jackman hosting the Oscars.
Big Bang Theory suuuuuucks. 30 Rock is by far the funniest show on tv.
