Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern: Fine, but where's my Wonder Woman?

Ryan-renolds-green-lantern-casting_l Much has been made of the frenzied casting of Hal Jordan, the former fighter pilot who gets enlisted into an interstellar peacekeeping corps and protects Earth from enemies at home and abroad as Green Lantern. For, like, half an hour, it was the hottest role in Hollywood — names like Justin Timberlake, Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto were bandied around — and Ryan Reynolds snagged it. Hot off both his role as Deadpool in Wolverine (which showed he could walk the superhero walk) and Sandra Bullock's love interest in The Proposal (proving his cache with female audiences), Reynolds made sense. Plus, I think he's a decent actor, one who's come a long way from Van Wilder.

But the apparent movement on Green Lantern has me asking another superhero movie question. It's not "How are they gonna explain to civilians the differences between Green Lantern and Seth Rogen's Green Hornet?" or "What's gonna happen to the Deadpool spin-off?" or "Why didn't they give the role to Nathan Fillion, who'd have crushed it?" No, I want to know where that Wonder Woman movie is.

Here's a character you don't have to educate the layperson about, one who has immediate name recognition, and one who still stands as a feminine icon. Plus, she's one of DC Comics' "trinity" — along with Superman and Batman, she stands as a pillar of that universe; a heavy-hitter in every comic book she appears in. Joss Whedon was tapped to bring her to life a few years back, but that went…badly. Since he left the project, it's just been lying fallow.

Money on the table, if you ask me. If you cast that movie right, get a creative team passionate about the character, and put some promotional muscle behind it, the potential is there for a Wonder Woman film to make more money than four Green Lanterns put together. And, not to be chauvinistic, but from a body-part marketing perspective, abs will always be trumped by boobs.

Which would you rather see? Green Lantern or Wonder Woman? And was Reynolds a good choice?

As much as I love Ryan Reynolds, Nathan Fillion would have been the better choice for the character. Now Wonder Woman, man I would love to see that one, but unfortunately unless you put some female who is over the top hot, you won’t get the audience like you would with Green Lantern. With that you get the male types who would go for the action, but the girls will go for the guy. If it’s a girl superhero, well we all love Wonder Woman but look at Catwoman and Elektra. Both tanked bad.

Nathan Fillion = guaranteed to flop that’s why haha :) , WW is tough one to crack, she would likely appear in justice league movie then get her spinoff

its all about the writing. i think a smart, epic script for wonder woman can pull off a hit. cast mary mccormack, and it would work out.

I think Reynolds will do well, and if they have a good story and everything, this could be a great movie. The special effects could be awesome, if the writers use their imaginations. I would love to see a Wonder Woman movie, though!

I have been dying for a WW movie for years. I idolized her growing up…she was my halloween costume for like 3 years! My husband and I both agree that Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox and especially Catherine Zeta-Jones would all make amazing WW’s!!! Someone please make this movie!!!!

I’d rather see a Wonder Woman movie than a Green Lantern film. She’s been my favorite superhero for as long as I can remember. I would have liked to have seen Lauren Graham in the titular role but with some of these names being mentioned now as possible candidates, I worry about the quality of the film.

i agree. this will bomb, as i ‘the green lantern’ was the lamest of the superheroes. it really does show how chauvinistic hollywood is that this gets the green light (ha!) before wonder woman, who is a million times more awesome.

Make her bulk up a bit and Jolie could definitely pull it off. Zeta Jones is already “old” in the sense that her image is a lot older than her age. She would definitely be great as one of the ageless Amazonian women along with Michelle Pheiffer. But none of the younger actresses of today can pull off Wonder Woman. Not Beil, not Fox, not Hathaway, and others are just too short like McAdams and Evangeline Lilly. Garner already had her shot with Elektra. And that only leaves Jolie. One of the few actresses who can believably pull off action. It’s her being in Wanted that drove the box office to a 55 million dollar weekend. Any other actress and the movie would have not been as successful. Give it to her. Make the movie and do it FAST.

Remember the Eliza Dushku and Beyonce Wonder Woman rumors? http://hidensneek.com/2009/03/04/eliza-dushku-to-play-wonder-woman/
I’m still hoping the role will go to HIMYM star Cobie Smulders!

Although I’d rather see Wonder Woman, I’ll take Ryan Reynolds as GL no problem. He can act, he has the range, de can do action (Blade:Trinity) and he has the body (boy does he ever have the body!) to play a superhero. In the meantime Marc, get your WW fix with a direct to DVD animated version that was released earlier this spring, it even made the must list at my sugestion.

After watching the Wonder Woman animated movie I am now totally convinced a live action feature would totatlly rule. As for the role itself, I kind of like that woman from Underworld III.

Hal Jordan has no sense of humor and they cast Ryan Reynolds who is the master of wisecracks? Maybe Reynolds should have been Peter Parker instead. Bad casting. Wonder Woman will be hard to cast because she should basically look like Linda Carter and nobody now has the bod she had all those years ago. Megan Fox is too flat-chested, Beyonce is too boring, Jolie has no hips and is too pouty-lipped. If Lucy Lawless weren’t too old and flat-chested, she could have played Wonder Woman because she is tall enough to be Amazonian.

Perhaps they should have cast Reynolds as the Kyle Rayner version of GL, which was hipper and a virtual wisecrack machine. Hal Jordan was always too whitebread to deserve being portrayed by someone with Reynolds’ humor.
