I went to a Harry Potter-themed improv comedy show Saturday night, and it was great — Slytherin vs. Griffyndor, aaaaaall kinds of Hogwarts jokes, a “ghost of Cedric Diggory” bit that was met with cries of “too soon,” etc. It was a big ole nerdcon, and I felt at home among my people, which got me thinking about why I geek out so hard on Harry Potter stuff. And I’ve decided that it’s all your fault.
In a good way! Harry Potter fans seem to be an unusually creative people. Yeah, we have a lot of material to work from, but people are making golden snitch pasties (SFW) for goodness sake. Are other fandoms doing that? Inquiring nipples want to know. Remember the Harry Potter musical? The entire genre of “wizard rock”? There was a Harry Potter PostSecret this weekend, proving that our favorite junior wizard saves lives, and there’s the What Would Dumbledore Do? philanthropic movement to “carry on his lessons on the importance of laughter and playfulness, working for equality, speaking up about the real issues, allowing oneself to grieve, to trust, and most of all to acknowledge love as the only rational act.” Amazing.
Is this my imagination, PopWatchers, or have you noticed a delightful abundance of Harry Potter fan-made awesomeness, too? Are you a mere observer, or have you created some Harry Potter works of art?

The Harry Potter fandom is so entertaining! I love observing it mostly, like the wizard rock is awesome! And don’t get me started on the HP musical. It’s really hard not to geek out when there’s so much to have fun with. I love being a Harry Potter fan because of the other fans.
When I was a camp counselor back in 2001, I created a whole Harry Potter craft class. We made our own broomsticks, sorcerer’s stones and sorting hats. A fellow counselor tried to lead the kids in a game of Quidditch on the basketball court once the broomsticks were finished, but it didn’t work out too well.
My friends and I created a “Harry Potter Character List” using friends and teachers from our high school. We cast 37 characters total, ranging from major ones (Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, etc.) to minor recurring ones (Dobby, Colin Creevy , Peeves the Poltergeist, etc.), and even The Whomping Willow! It was great fun, full of inside jokes, and a great way to spend a free period before Christmas Break haha.
Harry and the Potters FTW! <3
The Potter Puppet Pals are my favs. So funny and totally catchy. I am Snape – the Potions Master. What’s that mysterious ticking noise?
A Very Potter Musical on youtube is a must see
. It is a FULL musical that kind of goes through all the books. It is probably the most well made, creative, hilarious fan made parody I have ever seen.

I saw Harry and the Potters and Neil Cicierega in Boston last year. Best night of the summer!
God I love wizard rock.
StarKidPotter’s A Very Potter Musical (formerly known as Harry Potter the Musical) is probably my favourite. It’s “totally awesome”!!!!
Harry Potter fans are incredible! My friends, family, and I have had Harry Potter parties in the past prior to book releases and it is unbelievable how much creativity is out there from Harry Potter fans…ideas for recipes, decorations, costumes, games, etc. HP fans are the best-love being part of this fandom!
While the Harry Potter musical was outstanding, their is definitely amazing creativity in abundance in other fandoms. Supernatural, for example, has the unbelievable Plastic!Winchester Theater “http://anteka.livejournal.com/67179.html#cutid1″, the famous ‘Ten Expressions’ “http://kroki-refur.livejournal.com/tag/ten+expressions”, not to mention all the amazing vids. So I wouldn’t say that fun creativity is exclusive to the HP fandom by any means.
I’m so proud to be a Harry Potter fan! I teach a First Year Experience course for freshman acclimating to College and I would love to give it a Harry Potter theme. There’s a lot of positive references that can be taken out of the books and related to growing up. It’s just an idea I’ve had. And if you haven’t checked out The Harry Potter musical on youtube you absolutely should, satiric genius!
I was at the Upright Citizens Brigade improv show too! It was hilarious!
a very potter musical by starkidpotter is by far the best parody of harry potter. ever.
Oh, I love this fandom. For a while I immersed myself in the online fandoms for The Office and Twilight, but it just wasn’t the same. I love everything about the passion, humor, and general dorkiness of the hp fans. Top results of these obsessors:
1) Potter Puppet Pals. CLASSIC. I will never hear the word angst without miming banging my head against something.
2) Harry Potter Musical. New, but still…SO BRILLIANT! They’re so talented…and hysterical…
3) Any and all wizard rock, especially the classic “My dad is rich and your dad is dead.”
And then, we can’t forget the massive fanfiction archives and fantastic news websites created by Mr. Emerson Spartz and Ms. Melissa Anelli.
I found this film about two Harry Potter fans fighting over a book with plenty of NSFW swearing!

I love Haryy Potter! I’ve made temporary tattoos, t-shirts, bumper stickers, desktops, et cetera. I even just went and bought a new Hogwarts shirt from Hot Topic for this week. I went to Hot Topic for Harry!
The Harry Potter Musical. By far. That alone proves how infinitely superior HP is to Twilight, to anyone who even dares compare. The only thing good inspired by Twilight that I ever saw was the day my math teacher came on Halloween dressed as Edward, complete with silver face paint.
The fandom really is pretty brilliant. Fan fiction, satire, arts and crafts, an entire separate music genre, clothing, games, book clubs, etc. It just proves how long-lasting and prolific this series is. By the time the second Hallows movie is out, the series will be about 14, almost 15 years old, and shows few signs of completely slowing down. I can’t think of a single other modern series (I don’t care LotR or Narnia, as they’re older) that could inspire that lengthy devotion.
Read too fast and thought the link said “golden snitch pastRies”. Imagine my disappointment.
Surely the re-tooled Hitler scene from Downfall should be included somewhere in all of this. I was in tears!
I’ve done my share of wizard rock singles, as well as costumes, flash animations of the various horcruxes, mountains of collages and art, slytherin flags and embroidery, and the list goes on!
@Meg:
I’m the same! The Potter fandom was my first ever online fandom, and I love it! It’s so fun and entertaining! I tried the Twitlight fandom too, until I realized how crappy that story was and gave up the fandom. It seemed like the Twitlight fans takes things waaaay to seriously and don’t know how to relax. The Potter fandom is just cool and fun and I always have such a great time in the fansite forums. Good times.
I love Harry Potter and it’s the first ever fandom I’ve ever been involved in. I saw this Harry Potter musical a bunch of fans put together on you tube. It’s fantastic, hilarious, and the songs are great. Check it out!

And I also remember a few years ago when my friends threw a Harry Potter themed birthday party where we came dressed in robes and we’d get sorted into houses. Me and my two best friends would dress up as the trio on Halloween. I was Hermione!
