So we took Friday off from building our wish list of nominees in the major Emmy categories, but now it's time to delve into the awards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress (Drama Division). Last year's winners — Zeljko Ivanek for Damages and Dianne Wiest for In Treatment — were as surprising as they were satisfying, and hopefully Emmy will follow suit by recognizing more fresh performances in 2009. Here's four folks I'm rooting for:
Elizabeth Mitchell, Lost: The once slightly menacing Juliet became season 5's central romantic figure as she set up house with Sawyer and settled into a groove with the Dharma Initiative. Until, of course, Jack and Kate returned to mess up the dynamic. (Boo!) Is there any actress on television who can convey so much anguish and passion with a single glance? Answer: No! So give the woman her Emmy nod!
Michael Cudlitz, Southland: It's remarkable the way Cudlitz convincingly brings to life Officer John Cooper's on-the-job swagger one minute, then captures those scenes of his character trying to score prescription pain killers at a gay-bar dive. Toss in those enigmatic hints of the beat cop's home life, and you've got a complex, fully realized character in just seven episodes. (BTW, while Emmy is at it, how about a simultaneous nomination for Cudlitz's Southland colleague, Shawn Hatosy, whose beleaguered, sweet-natured detective is also a series standout.)
Tricia Helfer, Battlestar Galactica: Often overlooked in the discussion of the SciFi hottie's stunning good looks is the fact that she's a damn fine actress. Sure, Katee Sackhoff's scenery-chewing style gets more buzz, but I'd argue that Helfer's subtler work, capturing the personality nuances of several versions of the Number Six Cylon model, is more worthy of Emmy recognition.
Jake Weber, Medium: Okay, yeah, I can't write the guy's name without using the word Emmy, but Weber's steadfast, supportive spouse grounds the series, and his acting is every bit as impressive as Patricia Arquette's work in the lead role. That episode where Weber's Joe continues loving his wife while she's trapped in the body of Jeffrey Tambor's murder suspect belongs on Emmy's must-watch reel. Anything short of that would be a paranormal mystery.
Okay, there's my take, now it's your turn. Who deserves an Emmy nod for Best Supporting Actor/Actress in a Drama? Speak now: Nominations are revealed on Thursday morning! And remember, if your favorites don't make the cut with the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, they still have a chance at an EWwy.

MICHAEL EMERSON definitely deserves a nod this year. He did some excellent work in “Dead is Dead” with his confrontation with the monster, making it real and heartbreaking. And his masterful monologue to Jacob in the finale just offers further proof that he is the best supporting actor on television.
If he’s nominated, I’ll be happy with any other snub that may exist.
If anyone deserves a nomination for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, it’s Raymond Cruz for his portrayal of Detective Julio Sanchez in “The Closer” last season. His part may be small, but he makes the most out of it, and he was so very, very good in the episode in which his character’s brother was shot. I mean, I usually don’t get emotional watching TV, but I was just Niagara Falls by the end of that final scene.
If I’m rooting for any supporting actor from S5 of Lost to earn an Emmy nomination, it’s Josh Holloway. I had never really thought of him as an actor (as opposed to just another pretty face) until the episode “LeFleur.” He rocked it – give it up for him!
Without question: Michael Emerson from LOST
I just hope someone from BSG is nominated, because we all know how much the Emmys love Sci Fi *insert sarcasm here*
elizabeth mitchell…give her an emmy NOD??? give her an EMMY!
TOTALLY with you on Tricia Helfer. Starbuck as a character is so annoying and therefore I admire Kaete Sackhoff for doing as good a job as she did with the character, but Tricia Helfer’s Six has always been one of the best parts of the series.
Adina Porter from True Blood deserves a nomination. Her portrayal as Terra’s mother, a woman with an addiction that believed she had a demon inside of her was phenomanal.
I really hope Elizabeth Mitchell gets a nomination this year. This is pretty much her last chance to be rewarded for her character of Juliet on LOST, seeing as how she probably won’t be back next season; and if she does return, it probably won’t be for more than a few episodes.
I also think Naveen Andrews also deserves a nomination for his portrayal of Sayid on LOST. He was brilliant this year, especially in the episode “He’s Our You.”
I would love to see Jake Weber nominated. He was excellent throughout the season, especially the finale. It was little Marie who stole “The Man In the Mirror” episode for me. I love his confusion in “Then And Again”, how his face dropped when Allison revealed the baby’s sex, the ‘row’ with Ariel and the scene with Marie at the breakfast table. Definitely one of the best portrayals of family life on television.
The two episodes Patricia directed also saw great performances from Jake.
Yunjin Kim’s (Sun)
Elizabeth Mitchell’s (Juliet)
Katherine Heigl (Izzy)
Chandra Wilson (Bailey)
Tricia Helfer (Six)
How about TR Knight for his lack of screen time this entire season of GA…just so we wouldn’t ‘notice him missing for most of the finale’. Yeah right Shondra Rhimes come up with a better excuse for ruining one of the best characters on tv.
I completely agree about Tricia Helfer. As each season of Battlestar progressed and they threw more and more material her way, she continued to do a beautiful job with it. Just watch the season two Gina arc, she’s brilliant in it. She also did beautiful work this year with both Natalie and Caprica.
I definitely agree with Tricia Helfer. She brings a fantastic depth to the role of Number Six, but the trouble is that most Emmy voters won’t look past her rack. And there’s also the fact that she’s on a sci-fi show, so she won’t get nominated.
Count me in as rooting for Elizabeth Mitchell!!!! Not only for a nod but for the WIN! Mitchell is my favorite cast member from Lost and I am absolutely devastated that she will likely not be on the show as much next season! Juliet is the most interesting character on the show to me. Hands down the most rounded in a well rounded cast. I would love to see Lost sweep the emmies this year despite what others say, I still think Lost is the best show on the air, and the cast is the most talented group of people! Josh Holloway and Michael Emerson also both deserve nods, and I might even go as far as to say Evangeline Lily and Matthew Fox(easily the most overlooked/underapreciated actor in TV) deserve nods as well!
i think its a tie between Tricia Helfer and Elizabeth Mitchell, they did some amazing work
Justin Chambers he did beautiful work this season.
Alexander Skarsgard for True Blood. He’s like my new Josh Holloway: so pretty that it’s easy to overlook how much he does with his character. Plus, I really really want to see him in a tuxedo on award night.
Kevin McKidd for his work as trauma surgeon Owen Hunt in GREY’S ANATOMY. His portrayal of a veteran struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was riveting and has brought much-needed attention to a serious problem. And Owen’s romance with Cristina Yang (played by the terrifc Sandra Oh) has been nothing less than breathtaking as two hard-core surgeons find true love with each other. Plus, he’s promised to wear a kilt if he’s invited to the Emmy Awards.
Jensen Ackles for his work in Supernatural. It is about time some Science Fiction shows and their actors get recognized for the good work they do too. I too am tired of the same old same old getting all of the recognition.
Tahmoh Penikett (BSG) was amazing this last season. But can we just admit that the Emmy’s are perhaps the most frustrating awards show? They just nominate the same people and shows, again and again, whether or not they deserve it.
Kevin McKidd and Sandra Oh from Grey’s Anatomy deserve Emmy nominations this year for their outstanding work on the show. He’s a fresh face and she has shown a wide range in her acting ability whereas others on the show are still playing the same character after 5 seasons (e.g Heigl).
Jake Weber’s a great choice. Not easy to hold his own with the little dynamo known as Patricia Arquette, but they combine for the most realistic depiction of a modern-day couple going. On that kind of show? Go figure! And go Jake!
weeds kevin neilen, anyone who watches the show know that he has since the show began, had some of the best lines of the show, and with his stupidiority is so well deserving
the whole cast of the BIG BANG THEORY. Everyone I know who has been introduced to the show in the past 2 years of it’s playing has gotten hooked at the witty dialouge on the show. The only thing holding the shows growth is the fact that it’s in Monday nights and a lot of people think that Monday night comedies is the weakest slot, not on CBS, it’s by the best.
Patrick Warburton in Rules of Engagement.
His delivery is untouchable, there is a reason he is the most used voice actor in speaking rolls pertaining to comedies. He dry witty, but stupid approach to his characters are superb.
Kevin McKidd is amazing as Owen Hunt, and his storyline as an ex-soldier suffering from PTSD is new and interesting and he gives it so many levels of emotion. He and Sandra Oh (who also deserves a nomination) also have the hottest chemistry of any couple on tv.
Any nod for Battlestar Galactica would also be much deserved. That show is awesome.
Chloe Sevigny has managed to turn her dastardly witch of a second wife on “Big Love” into something more than that. As we came to understand this season what made Nikki tick, she perfectly toed the line between pitiful, damaged little girl and evil, damaged villainess. On a show with consistently top-notch performances, she is always a stand-out (and overdue for an Emmy).
Michael Emerson in ‘Lost.’ The most compelling character on the show.
Jeremy Davies in “Lost” will win if he is nominated and submits the episode where his character dies.
