'The Beaver,' starring Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster: weird yet intriguing

Mel-gibson-beaver_l Around these parts, we often lament the chronic sameness of entertainment, how every movie seems like a sequel or a rip-off or a watered-down version of something else. So imagine my delight and surprise to hear about The Beaver, the newest in-the-works project from Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson. Just…go with it.

The film, which topped last year’s “blacklist” of awesome-but-unproduced screenplays, is about a man who “wears a beaver puppet on his hand that he treats as a real person. Those familiar with the script have compared it to Lars and the Real Girl and the work of Charlie Kaufman,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. Foster is set to direct and co-star as the beaver-handed Gibson’s wife.

First, let’s take a little break to make every possible lewd “beaver” joke in our heads. [Take as much time as you need.] Okay, now that our minds are out of the gutter, put me in the “hell yes” category. Does this sound weird and kind of stupid, and do I expect the beaver to resemble Uncle Joey’s woodchuck puppet, and might this be just nine kinds of terrible? Certainly. However! I want stuff that’s different; I want to be dazzled by imagination and creativity. I want to be surprised and impressed, and I want a wider variety of stories and storytellers. So if that means that sometimes I have to resist the urge to make a tasteless joke about locker room terminology for genitalia, so be it. You?

I need more information, but how could this ever top Lars and the Real Girl? I do love Foster and Gibson’s previous team up in Maverick. Suprisingly good chemistry.

I think it more closely resembles Mr. Garrison on South Park, who had a sock puppet for the first few seasons. Good in small doses, but I worry that the movie will be like a bad SNL skit — a gimmick that gets beaten to death for way too long.

I know this will make me seem like even more of a dork than I am, but the children on “Full House” never referred to him a Uncle Joey. They called him Joey. Yet anytime anyone ever references Dave Coullier’s character on that show they call him Uncle Joey. There was Danny (Dad), Uncle Jesse and Joey. I’m such a loser.

you aren’t a loser. that’s the same thing i think every time someone says “Uncle Joey”.

Oh my god! I’d totally forgotten about that woodchuck puppet. It’s even creepier than I remembered. I’m really surprised there was never a very special episode where it convinced Joey (resisting the urge to call him Uncle, Tommy) to go on a murderous rampage.

I think the first two films Jodi Foster directed “Little Man Tate” and “Home For The Holidays” were so well done, I have been waiting for her to direct again. So this sounds very interesting. I can’t wait to see how it comes out.

I’d be a lot more excited if Mel Gibson weren’t involved…

I thought of Maverick too, I think these two are really funny together, so I’m definitely intrigued. And I agree, don’t love Mel as much as I did after all his personal issues lately, but I’ve always enjoyed his work, so I’m going to separate the personal from the professional.

Jody Foster can not do wrong, she is just talented, genuine, beautiful and very smart. I have a great respect for this actress, i always looking forwards for her projects.
She is the best with Cate Blanchett…i simply love her.
So very interesting project and she had very good chemistry with Mel Gibson on Maverick.

Thanks Margaret for supporting the idea! I’m more excited for this because of Jodie Foster. I was hoping that she would take off as a director. Hollywood needs more great female directors and I think she is one woman in hollywood who has the clout and talent to pull it off. Her first two projects were okay, but this will be her first ambitious one with a quality script.
And I like the idea of Mel and Jodie teaming up again together. Mel Gibson is the only man Jodie has ever had romantic chemistry with. They were so adorable and fun in Maverick.
Jodie Foster is my favorite actress and I just think she is our smartest, clasiest, and most gifted female star. She should be the gold standard for all actresses, especially the young ones who want to progress as they get older into a star with some substance and dignity in such a tabloid frenzied, sequel-ridden hollywood.

I’m just happy it’s not a remake of ‘Leave it to Beaver.”
