'Dollhouse' exclusive: Joss Whedon talks about EW's 'Epitaph One' first-look images

Eliza-Dushku_dl The long-awaited 13th episode of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse, the post-apocalyptic “Epitaph One,” will debut July 24 at Comic-Con, then on the season 1 DVD and Blu-ray July 28. In the issue of EW out today, we have the first look at SPOILER ALERT! Caroline (Eliza Dushku), who, having escaped for some time, is seen in the top photo entering an abandoned Dollhouse in the year 2019 with Paul (Tahmoh Penikett).

We also have an EW.com exclusive photo of SPOILER ALERT! Whiskey (Amy Acker), who has been left behind in the Dollhouse in a “wiped” state. She is discovered by a group of rebels (including Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog‘s Felicia Day), which you see in the clip below.

Fox had declined to air “Epitaph One,” which Whedon says was designed to either close out the series or to lead into thesecond season (which premieres Sept. 25). “So you will find out snippets of everything and all of nothing,” Whedon tells EW. “Every flashback answers something about where people are heading but brings up a lot more questions about where they end up or how they got there.” (Whedon says the season 2 opener he’s writing and directing won’t pick up right where the May season 1 finale left off, with “We’ve got to find Alpha!”, but a little bit later.)

Though he would’ve loved to have seen “Epitaph One” air on TV, Whedon understands Fox’s decision to save it for the DVD. “It has a very different structure and feel from what we do on Dollhouse, so it would have been ridiculously startling to have aired it the week after the season finale as just this insane coda,” he says. “And it is a little bit insane, except that we sort of follow everything through to its logical conclusion. As always, it’s logical to conclude that people are terrible and will try to destroy each other.”

Except we’ve seen that first photo before (or one almost exactly like it), so not much of a first look there.

“Blow this ***** back to the Bush years.”
    Classic.
Except I seriously doubt people will be saying that in ten years. Kinda like the ‘black president’ comment.
Unneccessary showing off and social commentary by a writer who likes shoe-horning such things in.

I haz a confused. Is Season 2 going to continue in the post-apocalyptic vein (which would be awesome)? Or is it going back in time, to answer how the apocalypse came to occur? And when do we get to the part where The Captain and Zoe rappel down from Serenity and slap Wash around a little bit and then give Agathon back his half-breed baby??

We’ve also seen the second one months ago. Calling this “EW’s ‘Epitaph One’ first-look images” is out of line.

We’ve also seen the other picture months ago. Calling these “exclusive” and “EW’s ‘Epitaph One’ first-look images” is really out of line.

Not really exclusive EW. The Amy Acker fansites posted that photo months ago *rolls eyes* Do a little research next time before making claims that are in no way true.

about 3 weeks old. Great “exclusive”

As for Abigail Richards, um, I mean Whiskey, hopefully the episode will explain why Topher REALLY had to program her not to like him, which I think the show’s fans would find more interesting than the nonsensical series premise.
I understand Joss has a five-year plan for the show, and I’m guessing that he’s waiting for the third or fourth season to introduce characters based on Uschi and Excalibur J. But given the perilous state of the ratings I’d say go for it, Joss, don’t hold anything back, you need all the help you can get right now.

A slight update from yesterday: the Dollhouse Season One DVD has now climbed to 30th place on the list of upcoming TV releases at Amazon.com, passing the sixth season of One Tree Hill and coming up hard on Bewitched: The Complete Season Eight.
I have been confidently assured by the Whedon-bots that demand for this DVD is going to make the internet explode, so get your online affairs in order, there isn’t going to be an internet any more after the 28th.

If that’s Whiskey post-Apocalypse, where are her scars?
    dun dun DUNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

Oh, and one more thing I’ve been meaning to mention. I thought Alan Tudyk did a solid job with the part as written, but you seemed to be trying hard to make him look sweaty and unappealing among the dolls. So let me just say, any time you and your beautiful sexy Whiskey want to stage a Dress Up Like Your Character contest at the original Dollhouse, I am SO there. I will kick your white dimpled ass up one side of the runway and down the other. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not crazy, Shy Christine will wind up holding the roses. But you and Whiskey will not be the competition I fear.

Was that… was that Scut Farkus in the background?!? I believe it was!
