Emma Watson 'guns' Letterman

Categories: Harry Potter, Late Night

As someone who actually spent eleven years attending an English boarding school I've never felt the desire or the need to investigate the world of Hogwarts. But I have always been impressed by Emma Watson whenever she does the rounds promoting Harry Potter and the Magical Bowl of Crusty Porridge, or whichever of the HP movies happens to be coming out at the time.

Watson was once again on charmingly-if-mildly-pugnacious form last night talking to David Letterman. When Dave quizzed the actress about her plans to study liberal arts in America and asked her exactly what "liberal arts" involved, Watson responded, "Do you live in the States? Shouldn't you be telling me this?" (Letterman's response: "The kid just gunned me!") Watson also kept her cool when Dave produced a photograph of her "wardrobe malfunction" at the recent, rain-soaked UK premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ("At least I'm wearing underwear") and admirably coped with the fact that Letterman appears to know even less about the Potter movies than I.

Check out the clip below and tell us what you think.

Is it just me and/or the amount of time I’ve spent watching Craig Ferguson interview people….but is Dave losing his touch? I mean, he just seems out of it so often when he interviews guests anymore. As if he’s not that interested in being there…
Just an observation. Oh, and I have an inappropriate crush on Emma Watson to match Mandi Bierly’s crush on Daniel Radcliffe….wow has she grown up well.

She is such a charming young lady! I’ve enjoyed Emma’s Hermione since movie 1, and it is wonderful to see that she appears to have maintained a down-to-earth sensibility despite the enormous popularity of the films. I hope we get to see her act in many more films to come, beyond Harry Potter.

i agree! she handled him wonderfully. i especially like the part when she quipped back, “are you trying to gun me now?” that was great. hopefully she keeps that good head on her shoulders and has a great, long career in hollywood.
i did think it was slightly creepy when letterman pulled out that shot :S but she handled it. good on her!

  • Mary

Yes, she was very charming and seems like a level-headed young actress (they are so RARE these days). But I agree that Letterman is a little bit strained lately. Maybe he’s just tired. I suppose that job gets very same-y after a while.

That is how young actresses should act on these shows. Watching Kristen Stewart(Twilight)do interviews is like watching paint dry. They should all be as charming as Miss Watson.

  • Scott

Emma handles herself very well in interviews and last night she really had fun talking to Dave.

I should hope Emma Watson will have a long career, and that she will go back to visit Dave often. They spar well together!

Love Letterman and Emma! Great interview!

  • Melinda65

She is a lovely girl, and handled Dave’s showing of that picture with aplomb. She was gracious, quick-witted and slightly snarky, and I hope that she has a wonderful acting career ahead of her.
And yeah, Dave seems pretty disinterested in his guests. Maybe he means to come across as humorously befuddled, but it ends up looking as though he doesn’t care enough to do any research.

Emma, Rupert and Daniel seem to be avoiding many of the traps that ensnare people who become famous at a young age. Kudos to them for their maturity and class.

Love her. She shows you don’t have to be brainless to be a young actress in show business. I agree it was a little creepy for Letterman to pull out the photo.

Letterman is becoming a dirty old man. He was great back in the day, but now he’s just annoying. He’s about as informed about his interview subjects as Larry King.

  • JC

Good grief Dave has become a creepy, dirty old man. Emma was classy and great. Dave was ignorant and charmless. What happened to the guy?

  • madeline

I thought that Emma Watson handled herself perfectly, she is beautiful and completely classy. One thing that did annoy me in the interview was how she constantly pulled back her hair. Still I think that she is the perfect role model for teenagers. Ledderman trys to be funny but just isn’t.

Classy girl, creepy Dave. But seriously — if you have to mess with your hair that often, Emma, it’s time for a new style!

  • darclyte

At least for her it isn’t as bad as her previous wardrobe malfunction which was when she was getting out of a car about a year or so ago, and the shot not only went up her skirt and showed off her panties…but also showed that her panties were partially see thru.

  • Marie

Ugh! Could Dave possibly be any creepier? Especially when he just sat there with that creepy look on his face when he hold that picture of Emma’s wardrobe malfunction. It’s no wonder I stopped watching him years ago.

  • Kor

LOL at morons who say stupid things about Dave.
Emma loves Dave. She always stops by Dave’s show when the new movie comes out. But She doesn’t give a sh*t about you poor and ugly looking losers no matter how you worship and praise her.

  • GG

What has living in the States got to do with knowing what the heck a liberal arts degree is? Seems she doesn’t even know. She was slightly too sassy in this interview at times, but handled herself extremely well when that pic was shown.

  • Ailene

Dave has always rubbed me the wrong way. I just don’t care for his humor. I only watch when HP stars are on and its STILL difficult. Emma handles things like this with so much class and patience. I don’t know how she can deal with that guy. It would be nice if he would at least PRETEND to care about the film the person he interviewing is promoting. Jeez.

  • dave

I love Emma Watson. I don’t think there is any other young actress today who is as charming as she is. I know that she has said that she doesn’t know if she will continue acting once the Potter movies are over, but I really hope she does. I think she would have a really great career ahead of her should she decide to continue acting.

  • emily

I adore this girl. She is beautiful, charming, and intelligent. Sometimes reminds of Natalie Portman.

  • Renee

I REALLY miss Jay Leno! I’ve tried to like David Letterman, but after seeing a lot of these interviews (with HP and other fave actors) where he doesn’t seem to have a clue, I just get so discouraged!

  • Tim

I thought it was more than a little obnoxious that Letterman knows almost nothing about the Harry Potter books. He has a kid! He’s hosted Emma on Wednesday and he’s hosting Dan on Thursday – the least he could have done was get an overview, read the wiki page.. something. I thought that it was a little embarrassing for Letterman to be showing the wardrobe malfunction of a bareley legal teen without warning her. But honestly, she spanked him right back several times. What a smart, mature, classy girl!

  • HelloThere

I absolutely loved this interview. Emma breezed through it with such finesse that I forgot she’s still a teenager. (Okay, alright, she’s 19, but still.) I can’t say I dislike Dave Letterman, but I do wish he wouldn’t appear so bowled over when interviewing young stars who are charming, respectful and composed. He kinda acted the same way when talking to Nick Jonas. I swear, Dave, not all the young’uns are batsh*t crazy; give ‘em a chance.

  • Rhonda

This only reconfirms what I’ve suspected for years now: Letterman has no idea how to interview people.

  • Former-Dave Fan

First having to apologize for joking about Palin’s 14 year-old daughter getting sexually assaulted…now confronting another teenage girl with a tasteless upskirt photo of herself caused by a gust of wind! Really Freaking CREEPING Dave. Notice how many times he leans in to stare at her legs…I don’t watch him and have written his sponsors with my disgust of this perverted gap-toothed old man.

I have just watched the interview and am appalled at how boorish Mr Letterman behaved. Emma Watson was grace under fire.

  • gogogadget

It’s “more than me” there at the end. stop being a dumbass and read harrypotter
