'Desperate Housewives': How come its younger actresses aren't up to par?

Maiara-Walsh-andrea-bowen_l Like a dental appointment that ends with news of not just one, but two cavities, this week's back-to-back announcements from the set of Desperate Housewives — first, that Andrea Bowen will be reprising her role as Susan's daughter Julie (an Ausiello exclusive!), and second that Maiara Walsh (Carlos' scheming niece Ana) has been promoted to series regular — were, to say the least, unwelcome! I mean, seriously? Bowen and Walsh's individual line readings are so deeply unconvincing, the ladies risk getting upstaged if there's so much as a house plant in a scene with 'em. And this raises a burning question for me: For a show that's never had a problem casting women of a certain age — think Kathryn Joosten, Lupe Ontiveros, or the fabulous Harriet Sansom Harris — how come Desperate Housewives has such a dreadful track record with younger actresses (none worse than Joy Lauren as Bree's beastly daughter Danielle)? Am I the only one who thinks Housewives' casting department should outsource any decisions involving actresses under the age of 30? And while we're on the subject, which young (talented) actresses would you like to see make their way to Wisteria Lane? I'd choose Summer Glau, EW's recent pick as a 2009 SciFi hottie, and maybe even her Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles costar Leven Rambin (love that chick!). Your turn, so please sound off below!

    1st!

While Bowen is nothing to write home about, Walsh only had the one episode (the last season finale) and is CLEARLY only there for eye candy. However, I just haven’t seen enough to call her terrible, and I actually think the character will make for a worthy adversary for Gabby: not only is she competition in the hottie department (Gabby’s always considered herself the “hot one”), but she’s also family, so Gabby won’t be able to fully unleash all her skills to take her down. At least not too quickly. (I’ve GOT to find something manlier to watch on Sunday nights once football season ends.)
I just don’t think this is as bad a problem as you, Slezak (although Joy Lauren WAS horrible). Younger actors are generally more inexperienced.
Ironically, I think one of the show’s best actresses is one of the youngest: that’d Madison de La Garza (who I just finished nominating as a longshot Supporting Actress in a Comedy Emmy Award) who plays Juanita Solis.

I disagree 100% with the reviewer regarding one specific actress: Andrea Bowen. She brought much to the show, her scenes with Teri Hatcher were relatable, interesting and a pleasure to watch! Ms. Bowen is a fine young actress, mature and real.

  • Karen

Wow… mean girl much? Although none are academy award caliber, don’t you think this column reads a little more like b*tchy Perez than EW?

  • Ceballos

    Yeah, I agree with Matt.
Bowen may not be the best, but the scenes earlier in the show when Julie was clearly the mom to an overwhelmed Susan was some of the best stuff. It’s certainly better than the typical pratfalls the writers have Teri Hatcher perform when they can’t think of anything else.

This from a man who thinks Blake Lewis is a major talent…

  • Jen

I disagree about Joy Lauren. Danielle was supposed to be annoying and immature and I thought the actress fit her to a T.

  • Victoria

joy lauren and andrea bowen are actually hard to watch they’re so bad

  • Dob

Why not hire someone like Alison Pill who is probably one of the best actresses (let alone younger actresses) on television. Just watching her on In Treatment proves there is up and coming talent out there that can do more than just a few line readings.

  • Fatima

Joy Lauren is the only one I have a problem with. And I often enjoy watching her because she’s so bad though.

  • AK

Hm, I’ve always liked Andrea Bowen. I guess I never felt like she had a real chance to prove herself with heavy material, but what she did all along was fine (not stand-out, but not train wreck-ish either). Certainly, I feel like she had good chemistry with Teri Hatcher.

    SUMMER GLAU!!
You take about line reading then you mention Summer Glau?!

  • ronn

    Like I’ve said before-
    No Nicolette Sheridan- No me!
(and I did force myself to watch the last 5 minutes of the season ender….really? that’s it?)
    It’s past it’s prime-time now.

  • nykolus@yahoo.com

    bring nicollete sheridan back. now.

  • Adam W.

Geesh. They all fill their roles well. Someone woke up on the wrong side of the futon this morning.

  • friendofslezac

Slezak, I adore you, but sheesh! A little too far. Have a glass of wine.

  • Patrick

I didn’t mind Andrea Bowen so much – I liked her deliberate line readings, if only because it made her character seem levelheaded when compared to her mom. But I definitely agree about Joy Lauren, who was painful to watch in the earlier years, especially when acting with the always entertaining Shawn Pyfrom (love him with Marcia Cross – they just crackle together as mother and son).

  • T

Really? Andrea Bowen? I never thought she was a bad actress – in fact, I rather like her in her role as Julie. I think Andrea and Teri have good chemistry as mother/daughter, and I’m excited to see that she’ll be back on Wisteria Lane. Man, the last few columns I’ve read on EW.com have been really negative, snarky, and pretty nit-picky. Something in the water over there, my friends? It’s summer – maybe some vacation time would help!

  • fhdgsk

I disagree. That little girl who played Kyla was absolutely brilliant.

  • Manny

Definitely Megan Fox! Make her the Girl Next Door like the movie a playboy too.

  • Manny

def. Megan Fox. She could be the girl next door like a Playboy or something.

  • Jean Genie

Don’t think Megan Fox’ll be there – she’s on her way to becoming the next Demi Moore, so she’s not doing TV.

  • very_bored

Summer Glau’s attempt to play a femme fatale on The Unit was downright laughable. It seems like she is only comfortable with roles that require extreme emotional responses – particularly crying and screaming – or no emotion at all. Playing someone who is mentally and emotionally stable is not her strong suit.

  • Tanya

I have absolutely no problem with Andrea Bowen I actually quite like her … she makes a great mother/daughter team with Teri Hatcher . I also thought the young actress who played Kayla was very convincing .

Woah commenters, what’s with the Summer Glau bashing? Maybe you guys need to watch her in some other stuff. Line reading? No. And while she isn’t often cast as a “normal girl,” she’s actually really great at playing subtle emotions when she is.
I second the nomination for her and/or Leven Rambin on anything.

  • Iris

Amen to that, Rachel K. Besides, IMO Summer is too good for this show anyway. And Leven too.

  • Iris

I meant, Leven is also too good for this show. I loved her in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

  • Ellen

Katie Mitchell, from Harper’s Island and Supernatural, is definitely an up and comer.

  • Del Mar

    Who cares?! Housewives is over!
