I knew big round glasses were back, but man, they are eh-heverywhere. I see them on the street (though I'm asking for it, I guess; I live in Brooklyn), I see them on fashion blogs, but now I finally know the strangest place of all: On Alec Baldwin's face in the movie Prelude to a Kiss. (Which was one of the "new movies" that cycled through on Hulu the other day, which is how I wound up watching. It's awful — stay away.)
What in the world? I don't remember 1992 being that strange at all. Alec Baldwin as neurotic doof was a tough enough pill to swallow, but with these massive specs, it's a whole other level of head-scratching.
But the lovely Baldwin visage is hardly the first face to support such epic frames. The other two that spring to mind….
The aptly named Ira Glass, and Sheryl Lee as Maddy Ferguson on Twin Peaks.
Okay, PopWatchers, am I the only one who's seeing the similarities here? Are you ready for the big-glasses revival that's apparently underway, or should this look stay where it is, in relics from the early '90s?

sweet fancy moses. great, now everyone is gonna look like my dad circa 87′
he wore the same glasses in beetlejuice.
and I hate these glasses. especially people wearing them that don’t need glasses.
I remember Dave Letterman once had a segment called “What’s the deal with old people and big glasses?” It was a series of old celebrities who wear oversized glasses. I guess pretty soon he will change it to “What’s the deal with youngerish people and big glasses?”
Circa the early 90s? Oh honey, these have been around since the early 80s. I submit for your examination, my 6th grade picture. Flippy short Farrah-hair, a pink turtleneck and a macrame necklace. And I was rockin’ the big pink frames. Of course, my sister and our neighbor started calling me “Simon” (as in Simon from Alvin and the Chipmunks), but….
I used to have a pair of those back in my college days amd I can’t tell you how many Clark Kent comments I got. Of course this was before Dean Cain or Tom Welling, so I was less then pleased by the comparison.
I love huge dorky eyeglasses. I wear them on my fashion-y blog all the time.

angela bower had some pretty huge glasses on ‘who’s the boss’ in the 80s!!!
Are they really back? For real? If so, I’m running out and getting a pair. I looked smashing back in ’90. If I do say so myself.
Taylor Swift wears them in her You Belong with Me video (which, by the way, still fails to make her look nerdy).

of course, Dan Deacon was rockin’ the huge glasses way back in this 2007 video.

Is it wrong that I find Ira Glass attractive in an indie-chic kind of way?
Andrea Zuckerman and Sally Jessy Raphael come to my mind…
Alec still wears these glasses in 2009. He’s had them for the last like 30 years.
I think of those as Sally Jessye Raphael glasses, circa 1983.
No! No no no! Those glasses are a hideous, tragic travesty!
