There's something wrong with Orphan's movie poster. What, you ask? Why, it appears as though the film's marketers couldn't decide between two completely different taglines — There's something wrong with Esther and Can you keep a secret? — so they just decided to plop them both on in hopes that one will stick. Either that, or the poster is asking me to keep "July 24" a secret. That's certainly a strange thing to ask of me. Everyone will know by at least July 23 that July 24 will happen! Silly Orphan!
Do you wish Orphan had just picked a tagline too, PopWatchers? Or am I just being cranky?

It’s a tagline, Kate. Get over it and move on with your life already.
It is indicative of lazy marketing and indecision of what the movie is about. The “can you keep a secret?” line is also so generic as to be meaningless.
One is a headline, the other is a tagline. Neither is great, but the previews look freaky!
Besides the double taglines, this poster is odd in that it seems to inspire vandalism. Every time I’ve seen this poster, whether on a bus or billboard, poor Esther’s creepy face has acquired some facial hair.
Uhm,
The theme of evil in humans or in the form of humans has been done and overdone. The Omen, The Bad Seed, and The Good Son, I mean you name it. If you ask me, the person who designed the poster makes this actress look like a pschyo version Vicki the android from the eighties sitcom “Small Wonder”.
The tag should have read: Sugar and spice?! She’s anything but nioe. Then again, what do you expect from overpaid Starbucks injected creative advertisers?
Who cares? I doubt this movie will be any good. (remember “Joshua” from 2007?)
The problem with this poster is you can barely read the bottom tag. Also, it implies that its maybe part of the title. As in “Orphan: Can You Keep a Secret”
I agree with Stephanie T. This looks like every other ‘evil child’ movie we’ve seen before. Looking at this poster, I’m immediately reminded of Silent Hill.
This movie got some negative attention from the adoption community, as in their first previews the tagline was something like can you love an adopted child “as much as your own”.
So they changed their previews and marketing schemes and I think the crappy taglines must have been their “second” choice.
Frankly, neither inclines me to see the movie.
Speaking of the movie “Joshua”, its sortof funny that the same actress plays the mom in that movie and in “Orphan”. (Vera Farmiga) I guess someone out there like the idea of her and evil children being a family.
I thought There’s Something Wrong With Esther was the name of the movie… not that I’ll see it anyway.
Remove the ribbon and my head will fall off.
Remove the ribbon and my head will fall off!
Barbara beat me to it. Her head is obviously going to fall off at some point in the movie when someone unties the ribbon. That urban legend is lame.
The whole “can you keep a secret?” tagline seems pointless because in the previews, we’re constantly told that we’ll never guess Esther’s secret. How can we keep a secret while simultaneously guessing what said secret is?
A lot of adoptive parents are angry about one line in this film: It must be hard to love an adopted child like your own.
They are angry about this movie line but are perfectly content that their adopted child has a birth certificate that was permanently sealed from him/her and a falsified “amended” one issued.
Adoptees have to live their lives carrying around amended birth certificates and are NEVER allowed to see their original birth certificates containing their true names and the names of his/her true biological parents. Adopting parents get to have their names placed on the amended certificates as the birth parents! What lies!!!! These violations of a childs rights does not concern the protestors because it works for them! It is not their ethnicities, their heritages that are sealed. No, their newly purchased child will be forced to accept these lies are his/her truth. These self-righteous people own the copyrights to their adopted child’s identity.
Mara,
You have obviously either
1)never heard of open adoption,
2)don’t know current adoption laws
or 3) must have very little knowledge of adoption in general.
Also your comment of “purchased children” is insulting to anyone and everyone associated with adoption. Also, I am shocked that you spout your crazy opinions so adamently about a line from a film or a tagline. Seriously? Do you have nothing more interesting going on in your life?
It is downright disgraceful and pathetic what people choose to protest.
I’ll be wearing my Orphan movie t-shirt to the movie theatre on opening day: http://www.cafepress.com/orphanesther

It’s really freaky how the pigtails are symmetrical to one another. If you take that picture of Esther and put it on paint or another photo program, and mirror the image.. The only thing that changes are the words. It’s really creepy.
yes i hate this poster too
it looks lame and i am not gonna see it
