Jay Leno using fancy car collection for new show: Cool or obnoxious?

Jay-Leno_l Jay Leno's getting a bigger-than-normal soundstage for his new prime-time talk show on NBC this fall, just so he can drive onto the set in some of his famous vintage cars. Seems a little tone-deaf, given that people are selling their Chevys just to feed their families and dealerships are going under in record numbers. But it could, in fact, be Leno's own way of surviving the recession: The gambit is a clever way to sneak product placement into the show during a time when car manufacturers are offering to pay your bills just to get you to buy from them. Essentially, it could seamlessly give automakers some extra bang for their advertising buck while helping make cars seem a little bit cool again. (Between gas prices, impending environmental devastation, and government bailouts, U.S. autos are soooo far from their '57 Chevy days.)

What do you think, PopWatchers? Are you turned off by the prospect of Jay arriving in motorized style? Or impressed with the ingenuity of such product placement?

    Jay who?

I’m not so much turned off by the prospect of Leno arriving to his show in a car as I am generally turned off by the prospect of him taking up five hours of prime time each week that could potentially house a creative and exciting show instead of Leno’s brand of middle-of-the-road humor.
Of course, that boat has long sailed, so it doesn’t really matter…why shouldn’t he show off his fancy car collection?

Who’s Jay Leno? Give Howard Stern that timeslot!

I am 32 and I actually find Jay Leno attractive. He’s cute, and I wouldn’t mind cuddling with him at night. It’s strange, I know.

Uh, if Jay drives a 1958 Studebaker onto his stage, I wouldn’t exactly call that product placement. I would call it celebrating American ingenuity!

Ooo, that seems a little insensitive….

Call it product placement if you will, I guess… But a lot has been made over the years about how the public doesn’t get to see most of the collection. So if he’s answering to those fans who want to see it, why not? As long as it’s an arrival and maybe a quick mention of what that cool old car is, I doubt it’s going to make people run out and buy a car today that has no similarities at all.

Jay doesn’t need a car collection to make him obnoxious. He does a fine job of that on his own.

So, what? There will be two people watching this show! This show should be cancelled now and save Leno the embarassment. He is a middle of the road not very funny-man. No “on the edge” whatsoever!

I just call it one more way Jay Leno is saying he’s better than everybody else. He’s going to showboat his cars and his wealth while people are living on the streets with no jobs. He is classless and unfunny.

For working trucks the rule is not based on the fuel efficieny. As long as it is manufactured before 2001 they all qualify
but cannot be older than 25 years old.

I’m a “car nut” and would enjoy seeing some of Jay’s cars.I think Jay is a down to earth guy and NOT a show off. Even the tabloids can’t find fault with him!

I grew up watching The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and ever since, I wanted to see a taping of his show and I knew I turned 18 – the age to be in the audience – the same year he was due to be replaced with Conan..now seeing what he and NBC are doing to scripted television I’m happy to say – although now I finally have my chance to see a taping of it – Jay Leno: YOU ARE NOT WANTED AT 10pm :(

  • Michelle Grossman

Hardly product placement if he is driving vintage autos onto the stage, but a cool idea. He has a beautiful collection and he is very informed about each one, why not share that with his audience?

Just shows NBC is still grasping. CBS and Fox are running with everything with good drama shows. NBC has dropped any good drama and stocked up with “loser” (pun intended)shows. If Jay had a car show on a Discovery type channel, I would watch. Jay’s car race obviously eats cheap time on the show that suffers poor writing. At least CBS and ABC have fair shows in the time slot.
