Apparently, there was some kind of insane Hollywood bidding war to get the rights to make a movie based on the classic Asteroids videogame. You remember, the one barely rendered in straight lines that had the player trying to survive an onslaught by stellar debris? For what it was, Asteroids could be a tense game — but a movie? And, what's more, a movie that needed underlying rights? Couldn't Universal — who won that four-way bidding scrum — just make a movie about noble men and women tasked with blowing up rocks from space without needing a game to base it on?
And even more than that, wasn't that movie already made? You know, Armageddon — with Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck flying in a spaceship blowing up rocks from space. Some days, Hollywood just…flummoxes.
Does the fact that this movie is based on Asteroids make your more or less likely to go see it? Or does it matter at all?

Seriously??? …a game based on ASTEROIDS?!?!?
I still love the game to this day, but a MOVIE???
I just dont see it.
Perhaps an updated game is on the way and this is just a merchandising flick??
I can’t wait until a rival studio announces the competing “Galaga” movie.
Let’s keep score here…
I’ve heard of a Battleship movie, a Candyland movie, and a Monopoly movie. Now an Asteroids movie. Am I missing any others?
How about a Centipede movie?
Well next we need dramatic, live-action, big-screen versions of Pac-man, Centipede, and Missile Command. If the studios actually were in a war to get the rights to make this film, they believe there’s an audience dumb enough to actually pay to see it. Count me out.
You know what I’d love to see Hollywood try and pull off. A BrickBreaker movie. You know the game that comes on the Blackberry. Or how about Tetrus: The Movie… what I can’t understand is who greenlights this stuff. We’re supposed to be making smarter decisions in this tough economy lol
there is already a galaga movie and centepede movie its called “starship troopers”
I see a riveting second act that consists of our hero leaving a couple pieces of small, slow moving debris floating about while cruising around and picking off little flying saucers.
I’d like a Joust movie, please.
Missile Command, definitely.
Good call, Jim in BR
At this rate they’ll be doing a movie based on Pong within the year.
Tetris!
Yes, it seems like an awesome movie! They need the copyrights and then sell the games and get points off the game sails. http://www.datingsportsfans.com/
“From the directors of “the Matrix Trilogy’ and ‘Speed Racer…’”
(Closeup of a paddle hitting a ball in super-slow-motion.)
(Freeze-frame at moment of impact.)
(Back to normal speed as ball is flung away from the paddle.)
SFX: Mix shotgun blast and jet engine over last shot.
(Black screen. Title appears.)
(and, below it): Summer 2012
Forget Asteroids. That’s one of the most overrated old school games I’ve ever played (the controls feel too stiff to make the game enjoyable). Do a movie on Geometry Wars instead. It’s the same gameplay, except GW is insanely fast paced and much more addictive.
Both games as movies would still suck, but at least with GW, it would be a crappy movie with palatable action sequences instead of slow, laborious ones.
