'16 and Pregnant' is on this week's Must List. What's on yours?

Categories: Mom Blog, Must List

My Must List is rejoicing this week with the news that MTV has picked up my favorite new show, 16 and Pregnant, for a second season. The docu-series follows teenagers approaching motherhood as they deal with their new-found responsibilities. Though it could have turned out an exploitative mess, 16 and Pregnant is handled with the same fair touch as my all-time favorite MTV series, True Life. It's more a realistic portrayal of tough issues (well, as realistic as you can get for a pop culture-centric cable channel) than Juno: The Series (despite the cutesy cartoon graphics). At times it can even get a little too real (um, I didn't exactly need to see the labor), but I guess that's the whole point.

In case you haven't seen it, watch the latest episode of the show below, then tell us: What's on your Must List this week, PopWatchers? List up to three items from current TV/movies/music/books/games/online. Don't forget your e-mail address, in case we decide to use your submission in the magazine. Deadline is Thursday, July 2 at noon ET.

I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH, EVEN THOUGH SOME OF THEM MIGHT BE BRATY I STILL LIKE IT ANYWAYS

    Mariah Carey’s ‘Obsessed’ of course!!!!

  • Vanessa

7th Floor West which airs on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and on the website. It’s a spoof on The Hills and is much more entertaining.

  • Sara

16 and Pregnant girl sighting…Farrah working at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Council Bluffs. Hers was actually the only episode I’ve seen and thought it would be ridiculous. She actually had a pretty good head on her shoulders.

    – “Better Off Ted” on ABC – This is the funniest, most original comedy since “30 Rock,” and the fact that there are new episodes this summer is just terrific!
    – “The Informant” trailer – Matt Damon is almost unrecognizable in the very funny teaser spot for this upcoming Steven Soderbergh movie. And hey look, there’s “The Soup”’s Joel McHale! http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/theinformant/
    – “Eastbound & Down” Season 1 on DVD – Danny McBride is Kenny Powers in Jody Hill’s (“Observe and Report”) uproarious HBO comedy series, now out on DVD. Don’t miss Will Ferrell’s cameo as used car salesman Ashley Schaeffer.

Yes, lets glorify teenage pregnancy! woo hoo! teenage pregnancy!

I have not watched MTV in years. I managed to see the ep above and it was very interesting. I think it was a pretty realistic view of pregnancy and the issues surrounding having a baby. If my girls were teens today, I would have them watch this show and use it as a tool to open discussions about teens and sex.

  • Levente

So happy girls can get pregnant when they shouldn’t and don’t have the capability to handle children and they can become a reality star for an episode of MTV. I think it’s ridiculous- real or not, these girls should not be on tv.

The new Jonas Brothers’ album isn’t half-bad. I know, mindless enjoyable pop being pretty musically sound? It might be the sign of the apocalypse, but it’s good stuff.
And Kathy Griffin on My Life on the D-List is just amazing comedy gold. The episode on monday with her and Paris Hilton…they need to have their own VH1/MTV reality show: Most Oddest Pairing of Celebrities, Ever, That Somehow Work.

  • Dwayne

For horror fans, this is too exciting:: The Strain narrated by Ron Perleman. Out next week. Think about that voice and those words………… Chills!

Burn Notice is always on my Must-See list. So, too, is Royal Pains. I like that show. I have a problem with 16 and Pregnant, though. I think it runs the risk of glorifying teen pregnancy, which is anything but glorious.

To Chris – I don’t think this show glorifies teen pregnancy at all…I actually think they’ve done a pretty good job at showing how hard it is and how ill prepared most teens are for parenthood. I’ver watched all of them, they’ve covered all the bases: lazy teen dad, single mother, financial issues, etc. I think it would be a good show for a teen to see and get an actual look at what could happen to them, just my opinion.

anyone watching Tosh.0? imho, the best part isn’t Tosh, it’s the bald man who is (or used to be??) on SNL. His sketches in the flower shop are great, he’s trying to straighten out major relationship issues with a flower order! Poor guy’s desperation is palpable (and hialarious!)

  • Tracy Lee Gilder

I am counting the seconds until Entourage returns this month with the new season. I smile just thinking about it. Who’s with me?

  • diane

Saving Grace continues to keep me glued to the set. I’m also digging Nurse Jackie, though my free Showtime runs out sometime soon.

  • Eileen

If I were Amber’s mother, I’d find a way to make that retarded child molester boyfriend of hers mysteriously disappear…

  • Ep Sato

I broke out the bong for weeds this week. Having avoided the show since they left “majestic” (it got too weird for me), the show returned to its comedy roots. At the same time, it seems to be getting weirder, but this time in a good way.
WTF is up with the Botwin sisters sleeping with every man on Earth anyway? And Nancy’s oddball relationship with a Mexican gangster makes me wonder more and more what her dead husband was really like…

  • Sina

The Closer is just getting better and better.
TCM..This month they are showing all the movies from 1939, the greatest year in Hollywood.
I do wish 16 and pregnant would show more poor or not as well off girls that are pregnant. A majority of the girls that end up pregnant (regardless of race) are poor.

  • Broadway Baby

Wes. I’m sorry he may be a great big phony jerk but is there honestly any other reason why we are watching The Bachelorette?

  • Liz

Web-Dorm Life. This mockumentary, currently in its second season, just keeps getting better. With only three episodes left, we got to wonder what is going to happen to our favorite 5-Southers (www.dorm-life.com)
TV- I am hooked on HawthoRNe on TNT. The supporting cast is amazing and they are make the show seem less like an average hospital drama and more like just a great tv show.
Music-George Strait’s newest song, “Living for the Night”, is amazing. The vocals tear your heart into two and the melancholiness of all could make this song this decade’s “I’m So Lonesome, I Could Cry.”

You guys are f*cking stupid if you think its glorifying teen pregnancy, Mtv is Mtv it should be about music, but whatever at least its showing what could happen, and who gives a rats if these girls went on tv? its not your desision your not them, so grow the hell up, and worry about yourself and not other, if you dont like the show then dont b*tch about it, idiot f*ck tards
