Ricky Gervais' 'The Invention of Lying': Truly optimistic?

Ricky Gervais is the kind of comedy genius whose work inspires constant confidence: Is there anything he could write that I wouldn't see? Nope, there is not. The trailer for his upcoming movie The Invention of Lying has finally hit the Internet, and while it doesn't exactly set my soul on fire, I remain hopeful.

Gervais, Tina Fey, Louis CK, Jonah Hill, Rob Lowe, Christopher Guest, Jennifer Garner, Martin Starr — with the exception of my parents, is there anyone I love not in this movie?

What do you think, PopWatchers? Are you on board for Lying, or will you just stick to your box sets of The Office and Extras?

I can’t wait! I actually got Ricky Gervais autograph when he was filming this movie right outside my office in Lowell, MA and I have been anxiously awaiting its release ever since! Love The Office, Extras, the podcasts… the man is comic genius.

I dunno…Love Jennifer, but not sure if this is going to work.

I’m with you, Margaret: there’s nothing Gervais has written that I wouldn’t want to see, assuming he stars in it. His delivery is uniquely funny, and I’m amazed at how someone so cynical can tug at the heartstrings the way he can.

I think this looks really good. It actually reminds me of a Christopher Guest movie in a way…it’s so idiosyncratic. It practically screams “Ricky Gervais”!

This looks hilarious; what a great idea.

    soo stoked!

Yeah, I’m not sure why you’re underwhelmed.
The concept and cast are brilliant. Most importantly, I don’t want to see all the funny jokes in the trailer for a comedy. Given all the people involved, I think there’s plenty in the movie to make it worthwhile, even if the trailer doesn’t have you falling out of your chair laughing.

Jennifer Garner in a movie that I can finally see without cringing? I’m in. (She’s so phenomenal, and yet stars in such crappy movies. Finally. She and Gervais give me a “Aniston and Carrey” vibe from Bruce Almighty. Maybe it’s just the cloud title cards…)

This looks funny. I look forward to seeing it.

Hello, when has the trailer told you what the movie is really about? Trailers always show random parts of the movie- and with this film, the whole movie is amazing, so they have to choose random, great parts. Gervais would never put his name to something that he isn’t proud of, so DON’T HAVE DOUBTS.
BTW, I like the UK trailer more than the domestic one. Maybe its because we get to see the Steve Merchant and Barry from EastEnders cameo <3

I agree that it was underwhelming. But, that cast! It’s gonna be good. Much better than the trailer. The story is really smart. There’s an opportunity to do some hilarious stuff there, and I’m sure they will. And Mrs. Bobby Flay, Stephanie March from L&O:SVU had a little part. Nice.
