Jamie Foxx does the Moonwalk at the BET Awards: Fitting tribute?

What is it about Jamie Foxx’s Moonwalk-y homage to Michael Jackson at last night’s BET Awards that’s not sitting 100 percent right with me? Maybe there’s a little too much “Look how awesome I am!” in the mix for a tribute to a superstar who died only a few days prior. Maybe it’s the fact that Jamie trips over himself at the :32 mark, then proceeds to deliver the remainder of his steps with a side order of the lacklusters. Or maybe I’m just feeling nitpicky because it’s 11 a.m. and my stomach is already growling for lunch. (Settle down, tumtee…you’ll get yours!) Check out Foxx’s moves below — and EW’s live-blog of the entire BET Awards telecast here — then share your opinion in the comments section.

As much as I love Jamie Foxx, I thought that his usual make fun of everybody routine was out of place, considering the circumstances of the evening. I thought that he could have been a little more considerate.

Yeah, I saw it. He was just having fun. I saw no disrespect. Everybody’s doing tributes in their own way. I thought the ‘moonwalk across the stage’ was a neat idea, and even though he tripped, he couldn’t stop- he promised across the stage and that’s what he did. No one can moonwalk like Mike anyway, so I didn’t expect it to be perfect. Remember, he still has a show to host, and he’s got to keep the energy level high. That cockiness you detect wasn’t really cockiness. That’s just Jamie Foxx. Have you never seen him before?

So happy to know that Janet is the executor of the will. probably the only sane person in the family. I can see her giving up show biz and becoming an executive and controlling his image and estate, like the Sinatras do.

Should have had Cedric, or somebody who knows how not to be a clown. Jamie either wrote his own stuff, or just improvised. They didn’t write that at the last minute. He was terrible. Didn’t know the cues, just looked lost.

I think Jamie would’ve been a fine host if he didn’t have to share the spotlight with someone, or the attempt to honor someone, last night. The couple musical tributes I saw were sweet, but I also wished Chris Brown had been able to be there (and I mean that everything hadn’t happened). LeBron & Beyonce’s recognitions seemed to be the most sincere.

I liked it. It just goes to show that only Michael could dance like Michael. Remember, Michael was human. And as most parents smile when they see their child imitating them, I’m sure Michael would have thought it funny. Clearly no disrespect here.

What was with Beyonce and the horrible bridal costume while singing Ave Maria ? The whole attemot at a tribute was horribel until Janet came on stage.

I understand that the changes were last minute, but I wasnt that impressed with the show. I had a problem with Beyonce too because she spoke so poorly of the Jackson family just a few months ago and is now trying to act like she cares so that she can get some more press..

I saw the video before this article and I had the same reaction to it — there seemed a little too much “Look at me!! Look at me!!” to be pure tribute; like maybe he was auditioning for the sure-to-be upcoming movie.

All in fun. I usually don’t watch award shows but I really enjoyed this one. Thank you BET for what you did.

He did the moonwalk wrong anyway. He was sliding back his lifted foot, when it should be the planted foot sliding back. Check out some MJ vids (Billie Jean) on youtube, then you can see.

Jamie did the best he could under a set of impossibles: no one can do Michael but Michael; everyone who cares about MJ is in shock that it had to end this way;and the media and vultures are gorging on the corpse. It’s all a sadistic mess. Jamie was trying to honor MJ, not distort him. It was an offbeat obituary. This is a horrible situation anyway you approach it.

I think people need to stop over-analyzing what Jamie foxx was doing. For those who dont know, Black people like to dance and celebrate the passing of people who we hold dear in our hearts. There is only so much crying you can do in public and even if it was perfect, the simple thought of tryin is a kind gesture and symbolic for our thoughts. We as people of color should be respected for trying to make a somber moment a little brighter and Jamie Fox did well because dancing keeps our people from crying at this moment.

The BET awards show was TERRIBLE. So low class. I know they didn’t have much time to put it together but damn BET – the world was watching that night – white / black / purple – we were all there and the show came off weaksauce.

I have always kind of been bothered by Jamie Foxx… whether he’s trying to dance like MJ, playing Ray Charles, or collaborating with Kanye … it always feels like he’s ALL about himself. He’s just too much, imho.
May Michael’s family find some peace in this difficult time.
