The real Amelia Earhart was carefully packaged as a doe-eyed sweetheart — not altogether unlike the plucky pilot portrayed by Amy Adams in May's Night at the Museum sequel. The trailer for October's biopic, Amelia, starring Hilary Swank, seems to promise a more serious-minded study of the trailblazing feminist who mysteriously disappeared over the Pacific in 1937. Call it The Aviatrix.
On paper, Swank seems perfect for the role, but actually seeing her in the role gives me pause. Maybe it’s simply because the actress’ beauty is so angular, in contrast to the freckled, soft facial features of the doomed adventurer. (When I close my eyes and think Amelia Earhart, I still picture Diane Keaton, who played Earhart in a 1994 TV movie.) Maybe it’s the unfortunate chain of hackneyed dialogue in the trailer. Or maybe it’s the lack of heat between Swank and her two leading men. Even the action, the plane crash, seems less than riveting.
Am I way off course here, PopWatchers? Did the trailer send you into the stratosphere? Is this film an Oscar hopeful?

Jeff, I’m with you. I think it might be the hair, Hilary’s already got very strong features. I dunno what it is about the trailer, but it doesn’t make me excited, and I LOVE Amelia’s story.
Looks good to me. I don’t really know anything about her story but this trailer made me want to find out, by seeing the movie – not really by doing any research.
This is a must see for me. It’s the only kind of role that Swank seems to shine in, playing tough women who go against the grain. Crappy trailer but I know she’ll be the best thing about this flick.
The trailer totally grabbed me. I think it’s an Oscar hopeful for sure. Obviously most likely for Swank.
Always been interested in the story, but this looks like typical Hollywood schlock “Hero” “Icon” blah blah blah. Nothing that captures the mystery and excitement of the events.
When I saw the trailer last night, it grabbed me as well. I think it looks pretty good. Plus, I didn’t have the advantage of seeing the tv biopic with Diane Keaton. And with Mira Nair directing, I think this movie will be beautiful. Absolutely LOVED The Namesake
If you compare pictures of the real Earhart and Swank, they look a lot alike. The tall lanky look is the same as well. I think their resemblance is closer than the other actresses as well. It’s all in how the character is portrayed, anyway.
I think Amelia and Hilary look very much alike, more so that Diane and Amy. The trailer looks good and you have to remember this is a Mira Nair movie, they have a more softer touch than regular hollywood directors, I’ll wait to judged it once I see it in full
What are you talking about? The trailer looks epic, great. Swank is headed to the Oscar ceremony next year.
That trailer actually made me consider going to see this in theatres. Let’s hope she’s a contender!
This looks like it will be a really good movie. Swank is one of the best current actresses and Gere always delivers good performances, so I think this could be a contender for a Best Picture nomination with Swank maybe winning her third Oscar.
Looks fantastic.
I’m no Amelia Earhart expert, but Hilary Swank looks a lot like her to me. The dialogue didn’t bother me and I think this looks like a potentially good film.
This looks good to me.
Amy Adams got on my nerves in NaTM, to tell you the truth, and I’m a big Amy Adams fan.
Looks good to me. I’m actually pretty excited
