'Ugly Truth' red band trailer: Funny or flat? (NSFW)

The inevitable red band trailer (NSFW!) for Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler's upcoming battle-of-the-sexes rom-com, The Ugly Truth (July 24), hit the Web today. And while it's got plenty of sex-ed vocab, it doesn't actually make the movie seem all that raunchy…or funny. In the clip, Butler's character — a misogynistic TV host — gives dating advice to Heigl's uptight TV producer, using a few anatomical terms and a lot of macho attitude. She rolls her eyes; he grins like a lech at a strip club. And…scene. Is that really the best they've got?

Of course, a clip doesn't always tell the whole story. So okay, PopWatchers — check out the trailer and tell us: Are you gonna see this movie?

Gee, I wonder if they’ll end up falling for each other?
    Looks lame.

  • Lianne

I thought it was great – very funny :)

  • Steven

LOL. Loved it. I am really looking forward to this as it looks like a rom com but with a bit of an edge. Katherine Heigl is VERY easy on the eyes as well so count me in.

  • Dan

It is a clip not a trailer and looks funny to me.

I think the whole premise of the film is offensive to women. He opens with a disrespectful sexual harrassment type comment in the workplace. Then, we are to believe this intelligent 21st century woman listens to this ‘pig’ on ‘how to get a man’?? Including exploiting her body and ‘acting’ out a part? THEN, she is supposed to what? Fall in love with this pig? PUHLEEZ You can make a comedy without degrading, de-meaning, and disrespecting women! Check out The Proposal!

  • Penny

Love Katie Heigl and I will love this. I am so there opening night.

  • Penny

RH – whatever it is a comedy. The characters are meant to be exaggerated. If you dont like it dont watch it. Spare me the morals.

  • MarkJ

Crude, rude AND Katherine Heigl. Count me in :)

  • RH

Penny – Excuse me? Morals? I love comedy and ‘good’ romantic comedy. But sexual harrassment is NOT funny, and neither is the fixation on playing games to get a guy. But hey, maybe that’s your MO. If you like trashy guys and juvenile bathroom humor — this is the film for you.

Definitely looks funny and I will definitely see the movie. I read the movie scored high in test screenings and that is why they moved the release date from April to July.

  • Yay

It’s a clip not trailer. More I see it more it’s an obivious hard Rated R rom-com. The director said it’s not politically correct, and he’s definitely right after seeing this clip. Looks fun and right up my ally. btw, most guys I know do love the long hair for that same reason.

  • Melissa

Ugh, I’ll probably end up seeing it because of Butler. He owes me a lot of money and time on some of the movies he’s made. Ahem, ‘Nim’s Island.’

  • bondfool

    Vicki Lewis, no!
Anyway, Katherine Heigl is doing more to set women back than Bobby Riggs.

  • Penny

No RH its a movie. It is Hollywood. It is escapism. It is not trying to make any kind of statement. Enjoy it for what it is. If you are looking for this sort of film for some realistic interpretation of life or even to make some important statements then you are wasting your time. It isn’t trying to preach or make any kind of comment. It is just something that should be treated as fun light hearted stuff. I don’t go to the movies to be reminded of reality. If you don’t like it you won’t be seeing it then you won’t have anything to complain about will you. Something tells me you will go anyway though :)

Bondfool – WTF? Here was me thinking she was a woman near the top of her profession, earning millions of dollars, employing lots of people, with her own production company and calling the shots. I think Heigl’s also pretty outspoken and standing up for herself and women in general. She certainly is strong and determined. If you think a COMEDY is going to put women back then the last four letters of your posting name seem very apt.

  • Claire

Can’t wait for this! Katherine Heigl is a terrific actress and I love her movies.

  • Sue

Looks funny. I will see it because of Gerry Butler.

RH, Did you notice the title of the movie? It’s called The Ugly Truth. Does the word “ugly” mean anything? It’s not supposed to be a sugar-coated-feel-good-your-average romcom. Sad but true, the Proposal did well in boxoffice partially because of that nude scene and other sexually suggestive scenes. “The Ugly Truth” is rated “R” for a reason and not everybody likes R-rated humors and so consider him/her warned.
BTW, I bet that Gov. Sanford from S.C. doesn’t talk like Chadwick and look what he has done.

This clip looks funny. Take it easy! It is a rom-com movie, not politcs or election. And, the newest latin american trailer on youtube is much funnier than the US one. :P I can’t wait for this movie!

Did Kevin Smith write this? It looks terrible. I’ll wait for cable. p.s. It’s not like he said anything that women don’t already know.

  • Christa

I’m going to see it. I’m always looking for a “not typical” romantic comedy. I hate traditional romantic comedies, so I’ll gladly watch one that busts out of the mold….even if it’s just the mold with a few more f-bombs tossed it. I like cursing.

  • Housewife In the Desert

If I wanted to hear those terms, I would go visit my gynocologist for my yearly…where was the “funny” in ANY of that? Katherine Heigel didn’t look particularly amused or comfortable with that dialogue, and Gerard Butler didn’t look particulary hot in any of this footage, so I will pass on the whole thing, thanks…

I thought it was funny. It’s refreshing to see writers, directors and actors who aren’t afraid to jump out of the PG 13 and PC mold. Honestly, you can be a feminist and a realist at the same time. Shows, movies and the news always try to hide the fact that a lot of men are exactly as Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler’s character) is. They really think that way, initially. I bet by the end we are shown that the boobies and the hair, etc., are not what keeps a man interested. One has to accept that to get most men to even talk to you they have to find something about you that is physically attractive. To deny that is delusional. This movie won’t be for prudes but I think it will do very well and increase communication between the sexes… a must date movie!

  • weetiger

Nicole, I couldn’t have said it better myself. I am excited to see this movie now. I don’t rush to the theater for rom-coms. I usually avoid them on dvd and cable. But it appears the studio has not caved to pc pressure and softened this one. It is a “hard R”. A comedy for adults. What a concept! And I thought the clip/trailer whatever was funny!

  • Yay

Nicole great post, and that’s what I exactly think as well. Mike is going to make Abby do all these things, but once you get down to the nitty gritty in the end the physical appearance is only a stepping stone. The Ugly Truth is going for both genders. I’m sure Abby will have her say and in end both will be right. It did very very well in test audiences.

  • littletote

Butler wouldn’t do a film just for sake of playing a chauvinist. I have a feeling that his character’s redeeming qualities will be revealed towards the end of the movie which are not included in the clip or the trailers. In the end Abby finally discovers what a catch Mike is. Oh how sweet. Can’t wait.

  • Interesting twist

Ok…Butler as always is great to look at…but this one is really a no brainer film. Its cute and its got attitude but the acting is less than either of them are capable of. Either poor choice of script or directing but especially in Butlers case..what was he thinking when he took this role. This guy needs to really re-think the parts he takes for the talent he has.

  • DawninDenver

This reminds me of that horrible Hugh Jackman and Ashley Judd movie with some generic song-title as the name (don’t they all have one?) where he was a womanizer dog who is shown the error of his way…snooze and horrible.
