Happy Birthday, Joss Whedon!

What to get the man who's given us everything? Okay, maybe not everything — I'm still waiting on that cold fusion thing, script-boy — but writer-producer-director Joss Whedon has been a cornerstone of popular culture for nigh on 20 years now. From his early gigs, on the Roseanne writing staff and helping craft the Toy Story screenplay, to his titanic television achievements Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse — not to mention his paradigm-shifting Internet musical, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog — Whedon has not only helped inform our entertainment discussion, he's led it.

So, hey, happy 45th birthday, Joss. (Can I call you Joss? Thanks.) Hope it's a shiny one. And, as a present to, well, us, I've selected a birthday-related Buffy clip that, in my not-even-close-to-humble opinion, has almost everything you want from Buffy: humor, poignancy, destiny, and a smothery hug from Angel.

"Helpless" is my favorite Buffy birthday episode; what's yours?

Happy b-day, Joss! What can I say but thanks for giving me my fave show ever (the lead character goes by Summers…if you’re nasty) and a bunch of Top Five-ers. I McLove you. Can’t wait to spend an hour or two at your cabin…

He does have loyal fans. I read on another board a fan saying the Dollhouse DVDs will outsell the True Blood DVDs LOL

My fav episode of Buffy was the series finale when the stupid show was finally done and my eyes stopped bleeding from looking at Sarah Michelle Gellar

So weird, because I was just pondering the importance of Buffy in my life the other day. My parents were not really there as guides in my life, we didn’t go to church, and I was wondering where I got my moral system from. Then I had this freaky realization that it was pretty much Buffy the Vampire Slayer that showed me what it was to be good person and a strong female during the ages of 12 through 19. Weird, I know, but true. So…thanks Joss Whedon, surrogate papa.
And my favorite episode is “Becoming,” because it made me cry like a baby every time I saw it and because it taught me at 14 that sometimes, you’ve got to metaphorically run a guy through with a sword for everyone’s good.

Hmm, I spent the weekend replaying my favorite scenes from Dr. Horrible and play the musical commentary. And with yesterday’s Buffy/Twilight mash-up, it shows why I love Whedon so much.

Happy Birthday Joss! Thank you for the awesomeness that is Firefly. The entertainment industry would be sad and lonely without you (or maybe that would just be me without your shows :) ).

Without realizing it was Joss’ birthday, I popped in Dr. Horrible’s Sing a long Blog on the way to work this morning. I guess I knew today I needed to listen to a little something from Joss!
