Fan-made 'Harry Potter' musical is totally spell-binding

Harry Potter: The Musical, you are my favorite. Thank you, students from the University of Michigan, for bringing this kind of joy into the world.

After the jump, check out the Voldemort-led tap-dancing number and the big finale.

Seriously, I cannot stress this enough: This is amazing. [via Buzzfeed]

On a scale of awesomeness, this is cranked to 11.

  • Joanna

You have just made my 14-year old daughter and her friends really, really happy. (Me too!)

  • js

In all fairness to the dance world, that “Tap dancing” is just marginally tap dancing. But my overall reaction is … pretty darn funny.

  • Amy

There are no words for this. That’s how amazing this is.

  • Abby

Wooooooooooooooooow. I am floored. That was totally wicked!

  • Allie

I go to Michigan and this was the most amazing show ever! Best musical theater program in the country! So original!

  • Julia

Wow, brilliant! They deserve a standing ovation for dedication and sheer creativity! It really is so well done and you can just tell from the performances that they’re big fans of the source material. I’ve heard rumors that they might be releasing a soundtrack! If that’s true, I’d be first in line to buy it! They’re done a spectacular job and should be proud.

  • Skeptical

Just wait until JK sues them, like the fan with the website when he wrote the encyclopedia

  • Julia

Skeptical – The man JKR sued lifted entire paragraphs from her books and just rearranged them into encycoplodeia form without adding any material of his own. The guy was a con-artist! These kids aren’t making any money off the musical and they have created their own material (songs, jokes, skits). It’s really not much differnt than all the wizard rock bands out there that JKR approves of!

  • Julia

PS: I am jealous of anyone who got to watch this live! It looks so much fun!

Harry Potter, The Musical… you are my favorite too! Is it still copyright infringement if they did this for free? Or for charity? How do you know they charged for this performance?

  • shy

where can you find the whole thing? I would love to see it

  • Devin

I go to Michigan and was associated with this production. Just to clarify a majority of the students in this show are in the Acting Department and NOT the Musical Theatre Department.

  • anonlaw

It’s most likely not copyright infringement because it is more a parody than any sort of rip-off of the book. It looks like it mocks the book more than it steals the essence of the book.

  • celia

It’s sooo Long, but Oh So GOOD!!! I watched the whole thing and they clearly put alot of work into it and they did a WONDERFUL job!! And I don’t even like musicals. :D

  • Andres

They didn’t charge for the performance. Its a student run group that performs for free.

  • Raven_Moon

    That was fantastic!

  • shoregirl

This may be one of my favorite things ever. It was great.

  • Devin

    *Clarification*
University of Michigan Theatre Department and Musical Theatre created this musical together. It was a collaboration between students both departments.

    • Patrick

Thanks for the clarification, Devin – I am assuming that you are, in fact, the Devin who played Cho Chang. If so, you did a super-mega-foxy-awesome-hot job!

  • laylagalise

This was hilarious– thanks for sharing! The best part was the ‘Lost’ reference and Ron’s food addiction. Kudos to the two song writers! The falling in love with Hermoine song and the one Harry and Ginny sang were both amazing.

  • Meghan

I just watched the whole thing last night. It’s so hilarious and quotable. You can really tell that the people involved are big fans of the books.

  • Dee

This was FANTASTIC!!!! Amazing, amazing job! I keep singing the opening number to myself…

  • Dee

This was FANTASTIC!!!! Amazing, amazing job! The actors were all terrific, the songs were witty, catchy and well-written. Kudos!

  • Kacey

Oh wow…thanks for posting this…how great! I want to watch the whole thing now. They all did such a great job.

  • s.a.

This deserves more attention and it deserves to be seen on Broadway! This was great!

  • jen

This was amazing!! Where can I see the whole production? Fantastic job – I loved the original songs!

  • Mary

Bravo to the UM team! Also, you hit the nail on the head about bringing back the joy. I’ve watched this several times now and realized that’s what I love about it. So often you hear about a book or movie that’s the next “Harry Potter” and walk away disappointed. Yes, they create interesting world but they lack the joy that JK Rowling instilled in the HP books.

  • minnie

    It;s absolutely brilliant!
I’ve watched it three times. Some nifty lil one-liners. *very* quotable, and StarKid is no1 most subscribed on Youtube at the moment, :P
    *applauds*

  • stella

YES!!!!!!!!!!!! About time you got around to mentioning it, EW!!! This is why you guys need a suggestion box so we can inform you about masterpieces like these right away.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. Needs to be converted into a broadway play right away. The premise seems silly but it is truthfully the most quality parody I’ve ever seen of HP, and one of the most damn entertaining things. I did not stop laughing throughout the thing.

  • charlotte

i can honestly say, that i HATE musicals, and i usually NEVER laugh at movies/parodies.
This, however, changed my thought. it was AMAZING. one of the funniest things ive ever seen, and ive been quoting it all day. they did a fantastic job, and i hope they put it back up
