Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks' trailer for 'The Pacific': Will you be watching?

Yesterday, HBO debuted the new trailer for The Pacific, a massive, 10-part miniseries exec-produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman, the same powerhouse trio behind 2001's Band of Brothers. This one is set in the Pacific theater during WWII and centers around three U.S. Marines played by James Badge Dale (The Departed), Joseph Mazzello (Jurassic Park), and Jon Seda (Kevin Hill). You can see from the trailer that, much like the six-time Emmy-winning Brothers, The Pacific won't shy away from the devastating violence of war. And, surely, I'm not the only one who was reminded of Saving Private Ryan while watching soldiers disembark onto the bomb- and bullet-ridden shores of the Pacific Ocean.

I don't tend to flock to war movies, but given this miniseries' impeccable pedigree, I most certainly will check it out when it debuts next year. (Likely in March, according to recent remarks by Hanks.) From Ryan to Brothers to Ken Burns' The War (which Hanks helped narrate), I continue to be intrigued and impressed by Hanks' and Spielberg's passion for exploring WWII. It makes perfect sense that after Brothers they'd turn their attention to the battlegrounds of the Pacific, no?

What do you think of the trailer? Will The Pacific be as good as Band of Brothers? Should the Academy just hand the Pacific team a pile of Emmys now?

Well, in my humble opinion “Band of Brothers” is the best miniseries EVER.
So I’d have to say I’d definitely watch this one. (Too bad I don’t have HBO).

I loved everything about Band of Brothers. I have a hard time believing that they will be able to get a cast as talented as the cast of Band of Brothers. I loved all those actors and will watch any movie/TV show that those guys are in so this new cast has some big shoes to fill.

I, like you, thought the Band of Brothers was great. In fact, for me, it was the best. I have purchased and read the book (and given as gifts to others) and still go back to watch the video time and time again. While I do agree there are big shoes to fill, the team of Speilberg and Hanks can, in my opinion, can do it. It would seem they are walking in the footprints they left from their previous project….

I caught the full trailer before last night’s “True Blood” started and at first I was like, what is this? A ‘sequel’ of sorts to “Band of Brothers” [in a way it could be, no? Almost like the flipside since those guys were almost going to have be deployed to the Pacific] But I got teary-eyed just from this…it looks like it’ll be just as good as “Brothers”. And lil Tim Murphy (Joseph Mazzello) from “Jurassic Park”–all grown up! Wow! When it flashed ‘2010’ at the end I was disappointed, but I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait if it’s half as good as “Brothers”!

I am beyond excited about this. Band of Brothers is one of the best things ever put on TV. The passion that this team has for portraying this war is beyond belief. As a student of WW2, I’ve talked to vets who say that Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers are as close to the actual experience they had they has been seen. My only worry is what is the source material for The Pacific?

Hopefully my grandfather will still be alive by the time they premiere this-I’d love for him to see if this is like what he experienced in the Pacific. He rarely talks about what he did during his stint in the Navy.

Thanks HBO! Band of Brothers and Rome are my two favorite TV shows ever. I’m not sure if this will be as good as Band of Brothers but it’ll probably be better than 99% of whatever junk the other networks force on us in 2010.

I loved Tom Hanks previous ventures with HBO (Band of brothers and From the Earth to The Moon), so you bet I will be interested in thia latest project.

Ceballos, I’m with you – Band of Brothers was indeed the best miniseries ever, if not the best war movie ever.
That being said, I’m not sure if anything can ever be as good as BoB – even though it’s made by the same people – because one of the reasons BoB was so great was that the real guys that it focused on were. so. awesome. So, I’ll definitely tune into this one, but not with hugely high expectations…

AJDJHJDKDIOUENDIO*S*(!!!(*$*$@I)$ is the best way I can put it. Also OMG OMG OMG !!!!!1111 and 1’s and so on. I believe a few MEEP!s and *flails* are in order. Of course, if you want to be kinda spoiled, you can read the memoirs upon which this is based, ‘Helmet For My Pillow’ and ‘With the Old Breed’.
That is a bit of a drawback for spoiler-phobes. Whereas the story of Easy Company 506th was pretty obscure before the miniseries, despite being out as a book for years, any Amazon search will turn up the memoirs upon which this is based, and the story of John Basilone.
But I don’t mind spoilers, especially historical ones. So again, OMFG !#J@AHJDJHJAAAKAK!!!!! flail flail iz ded iz bak iz wandering off skipping…

    Jon Seda, I am there!

I don’t have HBO but you can be sure I’ll have it by the time this debuts! If it’s any near the quality of BoB (and with the same producers, why wouldn’t it?) it’ll be a classic. I see a future purchase for by DVD collection…

  • Crystal

It’s hard to even conceptualize something living up to BoB, but you can bet I’ll be watching every minute to find out!
P.S. Damien Lewis I love you!

  • Chris

I’m feeling a lil WWII fatigue. Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, et al… not to mention the countless video games a la Call of Duty. While I have no doubt that this series will be a quality show, and chances are I’ll watch it, part of me wishes this came out a few years ago. Right now, a bit burned out on the subject, regardless of how noble it is.

  • sam

Well it is about damn time TH and SS came out with the other half of WWII story. Nazis were bad but Japs were worse so you can expect more blood shed then BoB.
I loved BOB so much that I must have watched it like 10 times. I wish they made it into a regular series or maybe 20 episodes instead of 10.
The trailer looks awesome, so you can bet I will be watching this along with millions who have watched and loved BOB. Hard to tell if it will be better then BoB but will see. Why wait, the Emmy should send the boat load of awards to them right now.
