Looks like Dancing With the Stars' Julianne Hough will be starring opposite Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford in the much-discussed Footloose remake — and I'm a little shocked by how happy this makes me. I'm a huge fan of the original Kevin Bacon flick (like any normal person who came of age in the '80s) and bristled when I talk of a redo first began. It could still go moderately to horribly wrong, of course, as things can when Hollywood tries to "modernize" a guilty-pleasure classic. (See: Love Don't Cost a Thing for "moderately," Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights for "horribly.") Part of the magic of the original was discovering the ridiculously satisfying plot, catchy songs, and cheesy warehouse dance sequences for the first time. And I have concerns about the two freakishly cute leads looking more like they belong on top of a wedding cake together than tussling with local officials in a backwoods town over dancing restrictions.
Still, after some deep contemplation, I say put me down for Team Hough (not to mention Team Crawford): We may not know yet if she can act, but I doubt this will require too much of a stretch. Hough's normal disposition seems a bit sunnier than Lori Singer's sulky pastor's daughter in the original, but I can see her as a wild-child, small-town girl. (Maybe it's that country-music career.) Plus we know from DWTS that she's almost unbearably watchable onscreen — oh, right, and she can really, really dance, which is more than we can say for, um, any of the main characters in the original. (Sorry, that wasn't Kevin Bacon doing those crazy flips.) Depending on Crawford's abilities — which we don't really know yet — this new version could be more musically and visually spectacular than the original, which could make up for any other shortcomings. But I still demand a climactic town council speech quoting from the Bible. And a prom scene with powder-blue tuxes.
What do you think, PopWatchers? Is Julianne Hough the new Lori Singer? Or better?

Well we know she can dance…and she’s a pretty good singer…acting? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. I just hope they don’t cheese up one of the best movies of my childhood!! So let’s hear it for the boys!!
Hmmm… somehow or another, this film is going to bomb. Trust me…
I’ve never been a big fan of the remakes, but she’s an improvement over Lori Singer, who I understand was a tortured soul in the original, but she was never anyone I felt any empathy for.
Now, for the rest of the ensemble – they need to be as attentive when casting those parts too.
She is the reason DWTS is so successful, I only wished she had Gilles as a partner, that would have been magnificent! Her acting is superb on the show, her dancing and singing make her a natural for the screen and look at her, gorgeous and u can’t take your eyes off her when she is is on screen…finally someone in hollywood got it right, she is ony 21? I think and she will be a big star!
Now if she dumps that tool bf of hers and finds someone who deserves her, that is icing on the cake.
Amanda Seyfried would have been an amazing casting choice! She has a great voice and can act. Just see any episode of Big Love…she can totally bring out that sulky pastor’s daughter side.
Chris Penn, I miss you. His ackward danicing was the best dancing of the original, hands down.
I’m still mad that Zac Efron bailed. He would have been absolutely perfect for that part. He said no to that, but he did that stupid 17 Again movie?????
I like the casting of Julianee Hough, though. She’s a superb dancer, and I like her singing.
I agree that Chris Penn’s role is crucial, too. He was part of what made that movie so enjoyable.

Chris Penn’s character is crucial, too. He’s part of what made that movie fun. Of course, John Lithgow’s part can make or break the movie.
Sorry for the double post …
Another re-make I could do without. Come one Holloywood, nothing original or what? How about you coem to where I live where unemployment is over 20% and I will remake all these movies. Can be that bad, you already have the scripts.
Ortega + Efron + Footloose = awesome sauce. Crawford + Hough + Footloose = bored now.
So how long before Julianne hooks up with Chace? Going after the guys she works with seems to be Julianne’s greatest talent. Guess she’ll dump the country music fans now like she did her dancing fans.
Jeez, anyone is going to be better than Lori Singer, even if this bombs. But I can just imagine a conservative small town being “offended” by whatever the soundtrack will be this time around – talk about “confusing people’s minds and bodies”!
Gee, Kendy, jealous much? Sounds like jr. high. I know, Chace was supposed to be yours, right?
