It occurred to me while watching the prehistoric comedy Year One, that the difference in two types of comedy is perfectly encapsulated in the scene in which Jack Read the full post.

YEAR ONE SUCKED IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOURE A DOER OR A SAYER …. DONT SEE THIS LAME MOVIE. ALL THE GOOD PARTS WERE IN THE PREVIEWS.
Your post convinced me – I won’t be seeing that movie or clicking on your articles anymore.
Thanks.
Btw, those more connected to verbal comedy are also more likely to be the ones sitting in front of a computer and reading this article I believe. That’s why the poll shows such a discrepancy

I have to say- I could not stop laughing when Cain killed Abel.
“No! What have I done?”
“No! What do I keep doing?!”
The action furthers the plot and tells the story- the commentary spells out what you’re supposed to laugh at…
So, if the choice is between Lenny Bruce and Jacques Tati, we’re obviously better for having both and “Year One” was still terrible on all levels.
I’m thinking I must be a sayer
The best example I can remember is “Mystery Men.” It was pretty funny when Kel Mitchell turned invisible to beat the security laser thingy, losing his clothes in the process. But Jeneane Garofalo’s comment, “Maybe you should put some pants on if you want to keep fighting crime today?” was a hell of a lot funnier.
I must be a sayer, because there was nothing I’ve laughed harder at this year than the first time I watched “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” and the off-the-wall narration started up. And as classic film goes, it’s all about “His Girl Friday” and “Bringing Up Baby”-nothing but banter and wit. I have absolutely zero plans to see “Year One” as I am waiting very impatiently for “Public Enemies” instead.
doesn’t matter if you’re a doer or a sayer (i think i am a sayer)… either way don’t waste you’re money on year one. it was a horrible movie and i like both jack black and michael cera and many of the other cast members. i really wanted to like it. but it was sooo sooo bad. please don’t waste you’re money.
so far this year the hangover is the comedy to see, UP is the family movie to see, star trek the action movie; away we go is the surprisingly awesome indie flick (highly recommend)…year one and land of the lost= the huge flops
or by year i mean this summer
I think I definitely favor ‘sayer’ comedy. I love quippy, witty and well delivered lines. It takes a special kind of pratfall or body toss to make me laugh. Though I meet somewhere in the middle with facial expression. I imagine that is a combination of both?
But yeh. Sayer if definitely more my cup of tea. Mark me down!
Definitely a sayer unless it’s a spectacularly good pratfall or especially funny physical comedy (Monty Python’s Ministry of Silly Walks for example). For some reason, Jim Carrey’s fall out of the airplane connecting tunnel in Dumb and Dumber gets me every time.
