Would Susan Boyle get you to watch 'America's Got Talent'?

Susan-boyle_l America’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan told reporters Tuesday that his NBC show’s fourth season — which premieres June 23 — will both honor and reflect the Susan Boyle phenomenon. Morgan even plans to extend an invite to Boyle, internationally buzzed-about runner-up on the recently concluded season of Britain’s Got Talent, to appear on AGT, “if she’s up for it and she is well enough.” Morgan’s tendency to speak of his most treasured contestant as if she might be a prize racehorse flowed on: “She still gets a bit tired sometimes, but she is 48.” Mark it down in the “observations” section of your science report: The specimen continues to appear exhausted.

America’s Got Talent averaged around 13 million viewers last summer, but hype from this spring’s British version could waft across the pond and compel even more U.S. citizens to tune in to witness the likes of a barber orally stimulating his own palms as if they constituted a brass instrument. Does the promise of Susan Boyle make you more likely to check out AGT? Would you watch it anyway? Vote in our poll, below.

Now we’re getting Brit talent on AMERICA’s got Talent? It’s not enough that 2 of the 3 judges are English and the American one is an idiot? That the producers are English? That the show itself is painful to sit through? There are hundreds of reasons I find this show to be completely unbearable. My 11 year old has decided he won’t watch it. Now we just have to convince the 5, 7 and 43 year olds not to watch and my summer has a chance to be fun.

No matter how much pressure was from the press, she didn’t change a bit and still won. Maybe that’s why I like her so much. I have read on http://www.projectweightloss.com why self confidence is very important in life. No matter what money, fame, or happiness someone has, you should be yourself.

It took the first two seasons for me to figure it out, but AGT’s producers AREN’T looking for the 40 most talented acts, they’re looking for 10 good acts and 30 or so acts that have no hope in hell of getting Americans to vote for them. Hence the drag queens, the bad magicians, the old people with a last chance to become famous.
They don’t want 10 equally good acts in the semi-finals, because if only 2 get through they’ve alienated 80% of the audience. But if there are two clearly good acts and 8 time wasters, then probably less than 5% of the audience will be upset if their favorite doesn’t go through.
And I completely agree, Americans should be the sole judges of their own talent.
Lame as The Hoff is, even he knows Americans won’t vote for transvestite lip-synch acts.

I sat through one episode of this back in its first season (or maybe its second…I can’t remember) and I couldn’t stand it. It’s basically a compilation of people who aren’t good enough to get on American Idol or So You Think You Can Dance or any other reality competition, and the “judging” by “professionals” is just plain silly. I’ll admit that when the Boyle videos hit the web I was intrigued, but her 5 minute performance could not do enough for me to have renewed interest in the American telecast. And, to be frank, Boyle isn’t the second coming of music like a lot of people make her out to be. Her story is a great one, I’ll give you that, but her voice…you can hear that voice on any stage on Broadway or on a cruise ship or at an amusement park (or on AI). Good for her for proving to everyone she can sing, but I could never ever imagine myself buying an album from her, no matter what genre it turned out to be.

No. Susan is not so good. Hasselhoff is a dumb drunk and Sharon a plastic surgeried self important twit. I only watch when I’m flipping.

  • kirby

susan boyle is fine but wont we need to chaange the name to the world got talent not america

  • bill

every one who has heard the “Cry me a river” understands that susan boyle has an amazing voice, much better than most singer stars in USA

  • Alex

I’ll watch it for Susan alone.
    The woman’s a star!

Oh, God, please no. Can Susan Boyle just please go away? Most Americans do not want this prolonged. We’ve seen the Cinderella plot, we know she’s financially set for life now, and BGT is cashing in by the minute. Could we please just leave this in England and start with something new already? Or are we doomed, through the English ownership and judging, to have a repeat? We are SO tired of this.

  • 54 and not “exhausted”

I find all these “she’s tired, but she’s 48″ excuses very annoying. I’m 54, and I don’t decide I’m too “tired” to get up and do my job. She wanted to be a professional singer. She does not have the stamina to do it. Fine. Make the recordings. But having to watch this endless display of coddling just so she and the BGT show can make more money is pathetic. I think this whole “exhaustion” angle is going to turn American audiences off. America’s got excellent singers who show up for their 5 minutes to sing. If I have to watch this British soap opera on an American network, that network is going off.

Family of 6. Will not watch.

  • Dorina

I don’t watch these types of shows, but I will watch if Susan came on.
I’ve loved her since the beginning.
    One devoted Canadian fan.

My friends and I used to think this was a fun show to watch. We want to see American acts. It should be American people who are on the show.

  • EleanorR

What bothers me is knowing she is still collecting her state disability checks. We know she’s getting all her meals and hotels paid for, can take a day off whenever she’s “tired,” and will make a bundle if she hasn’t already. But Simon Cowell is quoted as saying he has advised her to continue collecting her disability, and she is. I’m struggling to get by, and I go to work when I feel bad. I don’t want to be part of any audience that suggests I support what she’s doing. I certainly don’t support Simon Cowell, who is benefiting from her.

I love Susan, I would only watch the night she was on because I have watched some of the show over the years it has been on and found that I didn’t care for it or the Judges. Piers is the only one that acts like he has any intelligence.

  • HelenaM

Please make it go away. NBC, we do not want her here. No more Susan Boyle. I can’t log on to the internet without seeing another story. Is she feeling all right? Did someone famous mention her? We are saturated. We’ve had enough. Enough, enough. It is time for new people, new acts, different stories. American ones.

  • m k cooper

i do not watch agt but if susan is on i will watch it any time
    love her

  • tom

I’ve never watched AGT but I would during the episode that Susan Boyle would show. I love her story, her perseverance and courage. Not only that, she has a powerful voice. The baby boomers are a big crowd and they love her. You people who are tired of her, get over it. I never liked the beatles or Elvis but look what they achieved.

  • tom

I’ve never watched AGT but I would if Susan was performing. I love Susan’s passion, perseverance, and courage. Not only that she has a powerful voice and deserves the recognition. You people who are tired of her get over it. I never liked the beatles or Elvis and look what they achieved.

I love Susan Boyle and hope she will appear on AGT then I will watch it.
Susan is gonna make it big !!!
What she does with her disability cheques is her business not anyone else’s.
    Susan come to Canada !

  • Lori in Ont Canada

I would deffinetley watch AGT if Susan appears on it.
I hope she comes to Canada too!
Susan is the best and we all love her here in Ontario.

  • Terri

Would I watch Susan Boyle on AGT? One word. No.

  • HRiowa

I just don’t get it. The songs aren’t that unique. This kind of singing can be found in any municipal opera company, many churches, and on and off Broadway, without media fuss, and by American artists. Why is anyone assuming we want to be part of this British story? I don’t want to be unkind, but she’s just not that special. She’s been turned into a cult figure by the people who benefit financially from her popularity. I will not watch if they bring her to AGT, and I genuinely hope they don’t.

  • Theresa

Please understand–it is NOT her singing that has Susan Boyle “exhausted”. I am under the impression that she loves her music and singing so much that she could and does sing for hours each day. It is the 180 degree change in her life that has her exhausted. Going from being relatively alone–with only friends, family members, and her fellow parishioners weekly as company– to hordes of adoring fans, hordes of unbelievably rude media people, almost daily live concerts, and being expected to make life altering decisions within a short timespan would be enough to make anyone exhausted!!! I am extremely glad that she has professionals from several fields helping her cope so she will be able to continue to share her incredible talent with us. Can hardly wait for you to come stateside Susan!!! We love you here in the USA!!!

  • S Arnott

We do NOT all love her in the USA!!! Please do not speak for me.

  • Andrea, Little Rock

Yes, a lot of us love and care for Susan Boyle. She’s a refreshing presence in the media world really. We get tired of all the junk and it’s wonderful to have someone who’s plain like the rest of us. Take care of yourself, and keep up the good work Susan!!!

  • Marty

I’d watch, but that episode only.
No more watching people get destroyed by these talent shows for me.
I doubt she’d even agree to it.
They made enough money and got enough ratings from her.
I wonder who they’ll use this year.

  • Theresa

to S Arnott–I am assuming you are referring to my comment since yours followed mine by only 3 minutes. I assure you that I wouldn’t even attempt to speak for you personally. I was speaking generally. You must have misread my comment–it most definitely did NOT include the word “all”. The word “we” can be used to describe only 2 people. I know it is safe to say that many more than 2 people in the USA love Susan Boyle. In fact, there are many more than 2 people within my own family!!!

  • cindy alford

I love Susan’s voice, courage and stage presence. For those who do not like her, don’t watch her. She has lit up the world with her untimely entrance and I, for one, am grateful for her gift to me.
